Weird Mind News Room Episode 51: Feb 12th - 18th
*Music shanties for the high seas*
Hello me harties for the all new episode of the newest episode of ye old Weird Mind News Room where I shall be delving and plundering into all of the new releases, trailers and the news from the week of content. So lets raise anchor and set sail and lets plunder the treasure of Media
A Mixed Variety of New Releases
Movies
Madame Web
So we start the week with the first of the Superhero films of this year and is from Marvel and specifically the Sony Spider-man Universe without Spider-Man, However this film may be the closest to having Spider-People in it (well we'll get to that) besides Spider-verse and this is with the new film of Madame Web. Now this will follow Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in New York who after a near death experience taps into powers of Clairvoyance and soon becomes the protector of 3 young women who are destined for much powerful futures from being killed by a sadistic man in a familiar looking suit. Now the reception on this has been polarizing, and is now even worst reviewed then even Morbius due to its lack of action, compelling characters and villain and having very little to do with Spider-Man, With some praise towards some of the filming styles and Dakota Johnsons performance in certain scenes. Now I myself have yet to see it but hoping for a bad its good film so you can find out yourself too as it is now out in cinemas.
Bob Marley One Love
If superheroes are not in your interest for this week and much prefer the case of something with a bit of a musical tone then you can check out the all new release of the musical biopic of Bob Marley One Love. Now this will follow the life of the famous reggae Jamaican musician as he overcomes adversary and becomes the most famous reggae singer in the world and help to bring peace to a divided Jamaica. Now the reception on this film may be better then the first film, it is a bit more mixed with great praise to its Lead performance of Kingsley Ben Adir and the Music performances, but feel it is too much of a generic musical biopic, but if you want something feel good to watch then you can check out the new film in cinemas.
Video Games
Mario Vs Donkey Kong
Now for a blast to the past with a bit of a fresh coat of paint as we return to a long dormant series based on everyone's favourite Plumber and the Tie wearing Ape with a new remaking of the original Mario vs Donkey Kong. In this game you will be taking on the mustached Plumber as he goes across vast lands to obtain back his new toy making investment of Mini Marios as that Great Ape has stolen all the mini's for himself and you must puzzle your way to get them back. Now the reception on this new game remake has been very well recieved for its visuals, new worlds and puzzles and the Multiplayer new edition, while some critiques of its simplistic challenges and game length but if you want some short burst puzzle fun then you can play it now on Nintendo Switch.
Skull and Bones
Now onto the high seas of the golden age of piracy as we have gotten the all new high seas pirating game from Ubisoft with the long developed Skull and Bones. Now this game will see you become the captain of a hearty crew as you build your team, set sail on the high seas with your custom built ship and set sail, find the booty and plunder enemy ships and become the ruler of the seven seas. Now the reception on this game has been modestly recieved for its concepts and gimmicks but feel it can be a little repetitive and feel it is lacking some things that build from the original prototype of Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag, but if you want some of the high seas adventures and a few sea shanties and The Booty, then you try it out now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Tomb Raider Trilogy
And to wrap up all of the new releases of this week we are returning to the world of the series that defined bad ass female heroes (besides of course the original Samus Aran in Metroid) we are seeing the globe trotting Heroine of Tomb Raider return in the remastered Trilogy. Now this will delve into the remastered form of the 3 original games from the PS1 and Saga Saturn era and see why everyone fell in love with this series (besides from the triangular...... assets) and the option to play in the original visuals or with a bit of a more smoother look. Now reception on all the versions of this trilogy has been very well recieved with priase for its transition and visual upgrade with some saying it may need a bit of an improvement to fix some of the more difficult aspects from the originals with newer gameplay options. But if you are ready to dual weird the iconic pistols of this female badass then you can check it out now on PS4/5, Xbox One, Series X/S, Switch and PC.
Sweet Victory of Trailers
Deadpool and Wolverine
And now we start the trailer with of course the trailers of the Superbowl and while we can talk all things football, Sweet victory performances and Taylor Swift in our own time, we start the trailers with the most anticipated trailer from the event and that is the first look at the upcoming 3rd entry of the Merc with a Mouth with Deadpool & Wolverine. Now the trailer seems to show that Wade has worked the wonders of Cable's timewatch at the end of the last movie and it may seem all is good and well but suddenly a familiar timeline authorities comes along and brings him into the MCU, he will be sent on a special mission to solve possible time anomalies or some shit like that and come into contact with the man with the adamantium claws. Now this trailer shows so much and so little at once and I am so god damn excited for this film and this looks really great and I am sure we will learn more about the film by the time it drops in Cinemas on July 26th.
Wicked Part 1
Now for one that I was not expected as a push of a trailer or look into the film but we recieved a brief minute long teaser for the upcoming first part film adaptation of the popular Broadway Musical of Wicked Part 1. Now this will tell the tale set before, during and after Dorothy arrives in OZ and tell the tale of Elphaba, the Wicked witch of the west and how she came to be that title and bitter rivals with her initial close friend of Glinda the Good witch. Now it seems what I have seen online that people think it does not look visually great but I think it looks fantastic and most case will have the final touchups by the release and I am hoping it is more on the focus of the Wicked witch then the good witch given it is more of her story but I am sure we will find out when the film releases on November 29th.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
And now for the age of the Primate to begin and the possible age of the human to end as we have gotten an all new trailer for the upcoming release of the newest entry of Ape films with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Now this film is set 3 centuries after the events of War and will follow Noa, a young ape who along with a human girl named Nova will go on a journey to save and protect the remnants of the past from the new leader of Proximus Caesar, who has tried to banish the teachings of the Ape that created the freedom of his kind and his plan to find and destroy the remaining aspects of Human technology. Now I have been one that has been skeptical of this film due to the trilogy that came before being fantastic but I think it does look really great and I am hoping it will be on the level as those films as this films drops into cinemas on May 10th.
Twisters
Now on a film that is getting quite a surprise sequel and that is with the follow up/ standalone of the 1996 weather disaster film of Twister with Twisters. Now this will follow on from the original in a way and follow a group of storm chasers as they risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. Now I can see this as being a simple fun disaster film but I am sure we will see how it all comes together when the film releases on July 19th.
Godzilla X Kong: A New Empire
And for the post Superbowl trailer we are seeing two of the biggest names of a titan scale make an appearance as we have recieved an all new trailer for the upcoming release of the odd titled Godzilla X Kong: A New Empire. Now this film will see The Kaiju and the Giant Ape being forced to team up together as they have discovered a new threat in the sunken Earth in the form of the Scar King or a Monkey with a massive Wing Span and looks like he is balding. Now I think these movies are a lot of fun and if even the man who made the fantastic Minus One film says it is a lot of fun then I am sure I am all in for this new film when it releases in a little over a months time on March 29th.
Damsel
Now for some fantasy mixed with a bit of a royal affair as we are heading to Netflix for the all new film they are providing us in the form of Damsel. Now this will follow a young women (played by Millie Bobby Brown) who agrees to a marriage with a handsome prince of a royal family, but it is soon discovered to be an entire set up by the family to pay off a debt curse placed on them and soon discover she was not the only one dropped in a pit with a ferocious beast and soon she will use her wits and skills to escape, defeat the creature and exact payback on the ones that caused this to her. Now I think that it does look very interesting and I know I have my gripes with the main actress as she is in nearly everything with Netflix but I think it does look like a decent fun watch and you can check this out when the film drops on the streamer on March 8th.
X-Men '97
And the final trailer for this week will be the one that makes 90s fans rejoice as we have recieved the first official trailer for the upcoming continuation of the animated series of Mutants with X-Men '97. Now this will follow on from the original series ending that saw the passing of Professor X and will see the X-men led by Cyclops and Magneto in saving the world from evil forces and all other dastardly world ending situations. Now it seems to be keeping it close to the look of the original with a bit of an updated look to the animation and while it has a bit of a divide to some online I think it looks great and I will give this a look when the series begins on Disney+ on March 20th.
A quiet seas of News
Meet the new First Family and the expendable team gets a new early mission
And now we start the week off with some big news coming to us from more of the world of superheroes with the MCU and this is with the focus on Marvel's first family of Fantastic 4. Now we have known for about 3 years now that we are getting an all new introduction to this team sometime in the future and the release was up and coming and since then we have not seen any word about who would be cast in the lead role...... until just this week as after a lot of speculation, fan casting and predictions (and possible outcomes from previous films) we were finally given the cast of the 4 heroes. It has been confirmed that Reed Richards / Mr Fantastic will be played by Pedro Pascal (Internet Zaddy), Sue Storm will be played by Vanessa Kirby (Napoleon, Hobbs and Shaw), Johnny Storm / Human Torch is being played by Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things S4, Quiet Place Day One) and the Thing will be played by Ebon Moss Bacharach (The Bear). Now I think these are all very excellent choices and while I wished that it would still see John Krasinski as Reed Richards for the film after Multiverse of Madness, I think that all of them will do an exceptional job. Now it is bringing questions if this will be set in the present day MCU or if it will be set in the 1960s going off of the image released on Valentines day. Now it has also been rumoured we may be seeing the likes of Both the planet eater of Galactus and his general of the Silver Surfer appear in the film according to rumours but it is all speculation on that end but I am sure we will learn about it all when the film releases now in Late July of 2025. And from that shift in date also confirms that the planned release of the Thunderbolts for that date will now be releasing on the May 2025 slot instead as that one is currently in development as of writing and while it does bring concern on the amount of Marvel films, I do hope that all of them will be really well made and very enjoyable but I guess we will have to wait and see.
But what are your own thoughts on the casting of the Fantastic 4 and who would you have chosen for the film and also what other characters do you think will be introduced into the next film? Let me know your thoughts on all of it down below in the comments.
A New edition to learn to wax on and wax off
Now we have some news on the update for an upcoming film that will see a new entry in the series of 80s actions films and this is with some news for the upcoming new entry in the Karate Kid series. Now a few weeks ago we had recieved a trailer announcement that saw both Ralph Macchio from the original films and Cobra Kai and Jackie Chan from the 2010 reboot announcing that they will both be appearing in the newest films of the Karate Kid and that for that trailer it was an audition to find the newest lead in the series. Well that day has come as on Monday we got the confirmation that the new kid learning the art of Karate will be Ben Wang. Now Wang may be recognized for his role in the Disney Plus original of American Born Chinese and the case as well that he can also speak Mandarin as well as that he also partakes in some forms of Martial Arts, that it will see the release see less of a stress to get prepped beforehand to start filming (of course with some extra training and other stuff while they film). Now I think it is a decent choice and hopefully it will be a well made entry in the series and I am sure we will find out more overtime when the film releases by the end of this year on December 13th.
But what are your thoughts on the casting and are you excited for a new Karate Kid film and do you see other characters from the series of films and the show appearing in this film? Let me know what you think of it all down below in the comments.
This is the way for an all new game
And to end the news stories for this week is talking on some of the news on some video game discussions and this will be seeing us to the world of a galaxy far far away. Now as we have seen over the last decade we have seen some mixed variety of video games in the Star Wars universe with Battlefront 1 and 2 that saw the implementation of a law about microtransactions and loot boxes, a new single player series following a Jedi of Cal Kestis after the execution of Order 66 in 2 excellent story games and the upcoming release of a new open world game playing as a Smuggler, it comes as no surprise that we see an endless array of options of the galactic saga and it may be the case that we will see another new edition in this collection. According to sources, the studio of Respawn, the studio behind the Jedi: Survivor game and Apex Legends, is working away on a game based on The Mandalorian and Bounty Hunters and will be set in the era when the Empire has control over the Galaxy. Now this does sound like a very exciting game concept and I have seen some forms of this in recent memory but it may also be a game that has been rumoured dead for a very long time and that was with Star Wars 1313. That game was initially a new story based tale where you were taking on the popular Bounty Hunter of Boba Fett or even possibly Jango Fett and this could be the return to that planned title with a new update change of a new unknown Bounty hunter of the ones we have known about from Film and TV. Now at the moment it is only a rumoured speculation and it will be unknown to see if this will be being developed at the moment but I am sure we will learn more about any news soon and if we do then I will update you in a later piece.
But what are your thoughts on this and would you be down to playing a Bounty Hunter based Star Wars Game or even a possible return of the 1313 game and what other Star Wars games of the past would you like to see make a return? Let me know what your thoughts and choices are down below in the comments and let us discuss the ideas there.
And with all of that in the discussion, we reach the end of the 51st episode of Weird Mind News room and I hope that you have enjoyed my mix of ramblings and discussions and would love to know all of your thoughts and discussions of all that was mentioned this week in the comments below. As always I hope you all stay being very wonderful people (cause you are all such very special wonderful people) and have a great day everyday and I shall see you all in the next piece.
Take Care, Keep being you, signing off,
Sam H
