Weird Mind News Room Episode 58: April 1st - 7th

*music to fight with the power of the ancestors*

Hello there to you all to the 58th edition of Weird Mind News Room where this week we will be delving in some small mixture of new releases, a variety of choice for the Trailers and with the Basis of News stories of announcements and dates, so lets not mess about for too much longer and lets get to what has graced our presence this week.

The new releases of varying difference

Movies
The Monkey Man

So we start off the 1st of the 2 releases with the directorial debut of a well respected actor and a collaborative effort with a new master of Horror director as Dev Patel and Jordan Peele have teamed up to bring an all new action based film inspired by the stylings of John Wick with the Monkey Man. This film will follow Kid, a young man who is used as a punching bag and beaten bloody by popular fighters for cash and soon after years of surpressed rage and discover a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city's sinister elite after they killed his mother when he was younger and as the trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him. Now the reception on this has been very well recieved for its action, dedication, cultural roots and a great story as a successful directorial debut for Patel with some complaints on some pacing issues in the first hour but if you are up for a new action film then you can check this film out now in cinemas.

The First Omen

As for the last of the new releases of this week will ask you to get on your knees and confess your sins with another film of a horror based on the basis of religious undertones as we have recieved the prequel film to a series of films that has been around for half a century with the newest entry of The First Omen. This film will follow a woman who begins to start questioning her own faith when she starts to uncover a terrifying secret conspiracy to bring about the birth of the evil incarnate in the city of Rome. Now the reception on this film has also been decently recieved with its praise of being an improvement on the series of mixed results for its tone, setting, story and scares with some critiques here and there in its message or story but if you are up to confess those sins and say the hymns then you can check this film out now in cinemas.

Tv Shows
Ripley

As for the one surprise tv series that I completely forgot was dropping this week as well, we are seeing a new take on an adaptation of a popular novel from the 1950s and some share of adaptations with a new mini series simply entitled Ripley. Now this series will follow a grifter who is drawn into the world of wealth and privilege after taking a unique job in Italy, but to seize the life he wants, he must build a web of lies. Now the reception on this mini series has garnered some very well recieved reviews with a little bit of a divide as more people check out the series though the most glowing praise is mainly going to the performance of Andrew Scott in the leading role and if you want some new sense of thriller to soak up then you can check out the full mini series now on Netflix

Trailers of varying oddness

Smiling Friends Season 2
Now technically this did release the episode earlier this week but since it was only shown in the US and we got some excellent recreation of some of the best episodes in puppet form, I will include it (though have seen it and love the episode) but we have recieved a sneak preview to the 2nd season of Smiling Friends. Now the preview is mainly on the first episode of the season where Charlie and Pim will come across Alan spraying a PS1 looking character outside the office in the form of Gwimbly ( a character that has becomes a fan favourite in the span of just 4 days) and Pim and Alan going on an adventure to help the gaming icon get back into the spotlight. Now I think the way it blends the animation of 2d, live action and the PS1 aesthetic is actually really well done and the episode is funny and excellent too and this has also confirmed to us that we will be receiving more dosage of smiling friends when the season premieres on May 12th (worldwide this time as well too).

Bambi the reckoning
Now just when you thought we would be taking a break from talking about twisted versions of beloved IP's, along comes another new film from the planned timeline that will see a more fucked up version of a film that had a dark undertone to it as we received a brief teaser for Bambi: The Reckoning. Now the plot is very scarce as the focus of the film is that it will be seeing the deer all grown up and out for blood and revenge to find and kill the hunter who was responsible for the death of his mother all those years ago. Now all I got a focus on from it is some hunters having a simple chat and then a deer who is big mad and maybe it could turn out decently recieved like the recently released Blood and Honey sequel but I am sure we will find out down the line as it has been labelled that we will be seeing the release of this film sometime this fall.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Now from a creature from the forest to a creature close to us humans that have evolved overtime as we have recieved a new extended clip trailer for the upcoming film of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Now the film is set 300 years after the events of War and will see that Apes have evolved to rule the lands while the remaining elements of civilization become more feral and have been hunted down to be put to labour, a young ape named Noa will go on a journey with a human girl named Mae as they discover the last of the teachings of the original Ape leader of Caesar and stop the new leader of Proximus Caesar from preventing his teachings and protect the remnants of human technologies. Now as I have seen more and more of this film, the more excited I have become for this film and while I have my worries, I do hope this will be on the same level as the fantastic trilogy from a few years ago and I am sure we will find out that outcome when the film releases in cinemas just over a months time on May 10th.

Abigail
And wrapping up the trailers for this week is a film that I have discovered was filmed in my hometown and has a rising star and will show that small children can be proven to be real monsters as we have recieved a new trailer for the new horror comedy of Abigail. Now this film will follow a group of strangers who have to watch over Abigail, the daughter of a powerful underworld figure for the duration of 24 hours for them to walk away with a split of 50 million dollars, but it is soon discovered that its not going to be that simple as they soon discover that this little girl is a lot more powerful then it seems to be at first glance. Now I remember seeing the first trailer and thinking at first its a simple kidnapping film but then the reveal of the little girls supernatural abilities got me more hooked and learning it is a rising Irish talent in the role is more then enough and from what I have heard from its premiere a few days ago in the local cinema, it sounds like a great piece of entertainment and will not have to wait too long for this film as we can sink our teeth into this in 2 weeks time on April 19th.

News and announcements and release dates, oh my!!!

A new type of surfer is making their way across the cosmos
So we start off the news stories from this week with some of the newest editions of the casting news in a week of announcements and dates and we are delving into some category of news in the realm of the Marvel cinematic universe (a company that has been a bit quiet for about 2 months now). Now as we are aware one of the biggest upcoming releases in the MCU that many people are excited about is the new iteration of the first family with the Fantastic 4 and it was the last piece that we actually talked about (along with the trailer for a certain merc with a mouth) where we had recieved the official casting of the film with Pedro Pascal as Mr Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch and Ebon Moss Bacharach as the Thing and it was the question about who else will be joining the team with some new additions most associated with the group and it seems to be a case that we are getting another edition with a bit of a change up from the usual choice. It was announced earlier this week on Tuesday that we will be seeing Julia Garner taking on the role of the Silver Surfer. Now to many people were confused and some jumped to the usual stigma of the "DisNey MakIng it WoKe" by swapping the gender of the comic character but it seems most only recognise the character mainly from the original 2 films from the 2000s and possibly the cartoons as if you looked into the comics that you will learn that their is a female Silver surfer in the form of the character of Shalla-Bal, a character who initially started as a love interest of the Silver surfer of Norrin Radd and both lived on the planet of Zenn-La before she was taken to earth by Mephisto and the planet destroyed by Galactus and when she returned she obtains an element of the power cosmic which gave the character of Silver Surfer his powers. Now the characters has played both a hero and a villain in her extensive comic appearances since the late 60s so it could be an interesting form could be taken with the character in this film. That said we are not fully sure if this will be the villain of the movie or we could see the threat of Galactus or of course the demanded appearance of one Viktor Von Doom (who she also has a connection with in the comics). Now I think they have made a pretty decent choice with the casting going off of her dramatic performance in the award winning series of Ozark and I like the basis of introducing more and more new and obscure characters to the MCU and hopefully we will see what form she will play in this film by the time the film releases in the summer of next year.

But what are your thoughts on this casting choice and do you think this version of the Silver Surfer will be a hero or a villain and who else do you see appearing in the film? Let me know you thoughts and opinions down below in the comments.

Open your mind to return to the Matrix
Now the next story will ask you to make a choice and to open your mind as we have recieved an announcement of a continuation to a long running series. Now one of the biggest significant films of the generation of film that has come out was in the form of the original Matrix that introduced the world to Neo, Trinity, Mr Smith, Morpheous and many more to come across its vast series with a stand out original, a mixed response of 2 follow ups and a sequel 20 years later that has since garnered a bit of a divide since its release and all seemed to be a case of wondering if we had jacked into the system for the last time.... that was until the announcement from this week as it looks like we are heading back into the world of the Matrix for a 5th entry in this series. Now it was announced just on Monday and from that point not much else is known or even the likes of any form of plot to this new film but we do have some idea of who will be making it. Now initially the series was created by the Now Wachowski Sisters and the likes of the previous Resurrections was helmed specifically by Lana Wachowski but for this time around she will be stepping away from directing duties and instead be taking a role as an executive producer and the director on this will now be taken on from Andrew Goddard, who is know for the writing and executive producing of the Cloverfield trilogy, World War Z and The Martian and will follow his directing duties of the small thriller hit of Bad Times at the El Royale and will be directing and writing this new film. As things stand it has only been announced to be in development, it has no planned current release date and if the likes of the main leads of Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss will be making an appearance returning back as Neo and Trinity but I am sure we will learn more about the whole ordeal sometime soon and once I hear anything I will update you in a later piece.

But I would love to hear what are your opinions on this and are you excited for another new Matrix film and what are your opinions on the first 4 films? let me know what you think of them all down below.

A director of powerful female led stories will take on a film of a very powerful female hero
Now the next on the list is staying with the company of Warner Bros as we are now heading over to the realm of the planned DC universe as we have a little update on one of the projects that we have known about for quite some time now. Now we are slowly but surely seeing the slow beginnings of the development of the newly established DCU from Gunn and Safran with the likes of Superman, The Brave and the bold, Creature commandos Waller, Teen Titans and of course the focus of the story for toady on the Woman of Tomorrow of Supergirl. Now we have seen some small updates over the last few weeks from the establishment of the writer for this film of Ana Nogueira (who is also involved in the upcoming film on the Teen titans) and that we recently got the casting of the main lead in the role of upcoming Australian actress Milly Alcock as the Main heroine of the story and since then it has been the discussion of who else it was in the film and who will be taking charge of the directing duties. Now some of the names floating around of being good choices for the directing chair was some names like the Wachowski's, JJ Abrahms and the most popular one being Barbie director of Greta Gerwig but it seems to be the case now that we may have a director chosen in the form of Craig Gillespie. Now it is a case that this director has quite the acclaimed nature of films under his belt as 2 of his most well known films he has directed in the past was the Oscar winning films of I, Tonya and the Live Action Disney film of Cruella (Both movies that I will say are actually very good) and I think it is a case that given that he is also from Australia that he may help find a vision with the script and the performance of Alcock so there is a chance that things may be working out well in the right direction. Now I am sure we will learn soon enough of some of the other aspects of the project over the next few months as the likes of more casting and filming gets underway but once I do I will update all in a later piece when it happens.

But what are your opinions on this director for the film and who would you have got to direct the movie? Let me know what your ideas of choice are down below in the comments

Disney be coming along with some new release dates
Now the final story of this week is mainly on the basis of talking more on some confirmation of release dates and announcements of some changes around and this is of course coming to us from the House of Mouse with Disney. Now they seem to be still in the midst of the shakeups and just this week they have released and confirmed the release dates for a few upcoming projects with the likes of the areas of confirmed titles for the next 2-3 years from the rest of 2024 to 2026 and I will be given a few new announcements and dates of the big tentpole films confirmed from the reporting.

So we start with the remainder of 2024 as we know the case that most of the films from this year will be seeing no affect of changes with the big tentpoles being the sequel to Inside Out in June, the 3rd Deadpool movie with Wolverine in late July, Alien in August and Disney's animated film release of the Moana sequel in November that recieved a new look image this week as well as the first look image of the last big release with the live action Lion King Prequel Sequel of Mufasa and yeah that sure is a lion Cub, one of the Lion Cubs of all time.

As we move into 2025 is where we get some confirmation of at least 2 changes with the first of a planned Live action remake of the original Moana (a film that originally came out less then 10 years ago and is easily a really unnecessary film and probably the rock getting some revenue back after the last few movies he has been in underperforming) and the other is a confirmation of the release date for the 3rd movie in the Tron Franchise with Ares now given a release date of October 10th 2025. This will be joining amongst some of Disney's other big releases of the year with their Live action interpretation of Snow White in March, Marvel releasing a mix selection with Captain America 4 in February, Thunderbolts in May, Fantastic 4 in July and the Blade film in October, and then animated side of things will see the release of Pixar's new original Elio in June (which was supposed to be released by this point) and Disney's return with the sequel to Zootopia (or Zootropolis in the UK for some reason) as well as the return to Pandora with Avatar 3 that Christmas.

And then going into 2026, we have recieved the confirmation that we will be receiving the Mandalorian film from the galaxy of Star Wars on May 22nd that year, the following month we will be getting Toy Story 5 on June 19th and then on July 10th will see the delayed live action remake of Moana release. It is also confirmed that we will be seeing the 3rd film in the Frozen franchise in November 2026 as well as the planned first new film in the Avengers Saga sometime this year as well. On the likes of other projects it is unknown what else is in the works as there is other untitled Disney films as well as a 2nd Pixar movie that year and the confirmation of the news that we will see a 2nd Star Wars movie with the reports suggesting that the film is the new Jedi Order Rey focused movie that has now secured a writer for it who worked on previous shows in the Star Wars series and other big release projects that could release that Christmas. So that is some of the big release projects over the next 2.5 years and a lot of them are very exciting and hopefully they will be very entertaining, fun and appealing and not (but most likely will like a lot of films and media lately) will not e dogpiled on and given a chance of being appealing.

But what are your thoughts on all of these release dates and is there any of them in particular you are excited about? Let me know what your thoughts are down below in the comments

And with all of that, this brings us all to the end of the 58th edition of Weird Mind News room and I hope you enjoyed listening to me talk at length at all things media. Let me know your thoughts and opinions down below of all that has been released this week and get your opinions on all if you seen any of these or your thoughts in general. As always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in another blog :)

Take care, keep being you, signing off,
Sam H
