Inside Out 2 Review: A wonderful display of Emotional Baggage

 Inside Out 2 Review

Emotions, they are are a crazy thing that we experience in each passing day from the common of happiness, sadness, a sense of anger, dread, fear or any other common or uncommon, such as Love, confusion, gloominess and melancholy and even some other forms of emotions we do not understand or are too NSFW for me to delve into. There is many ways that we can express our emotions, from the aspect of being a positive piece to someones day, breaking down into tears and a mixed array of emotions to yourself cause you don't have much else to show it to help or putting your love and passion into any form of project that you would want to make and this comes in the form of art, hobbies or even making entertainment, especially in the realm of Animation. Animation can really show the case of no matter the style and animation there is a lot of stories and ways that emotion can be shown through the likes of a Passion project one chooses to make, a story that is told of a personal experience shown in a unique way to a sense of creativity and ideas that come to life in many different ways and many different art styles and this I see a lot with the Animation studio that I have a personal love for and that is with Pixar. We have seen through the years the creative ideas and emotions and tone that the concept for any story at the studio is often the theme of "What if *certain thing* had feelings" and we have seen it told through us from the ideas of Toys coming to life when humans are not around, a Robot all alone on a polluted planet that wants to find love, a small Rat that dreams of becoming a chef, a world populated by sentient cars that at first is about racing but then in the one off sequel of delving into a corrupt evil plan to take control of the oil industry and have a power grip on the world and questioning the moral and intricate methods of the world of that series (this we will delve into more come the eventual re-watchathon) and personal stories of a directors message to his late father, a story of a mother and daughter told using a giant Red Panda and many more but in the focus of the review today, we are focusing directly on the middle man with the idea of said feelings and ponder the question "what really goes on inside their head" as we are talking on the sequel to the Award winning film on emotions with Inside Out 2. Coming in around a decade after the originals release, we return to the mind of a 13 year old Riley and catch up with the emotions inside her head and also deal with a lot of new changes in the process and we ask the question of if this follow up works well or not at all. I think personally this film stands on par with the excellent original and even goes a bit above that and in all sense may be my favourite film of 2024 (personally) and I will be delving into the film in this review

*Also to clarify: I will not be spoiling this film at all (a little more of some spoilers for the original) as it is still recent and want people to check it out for themselves and in most case their is 2 scenes that resonate with me I will delve into but work my best not to spoil them and give more of a personal perspective to them*

A Story of Change

So on the basis of story I will be giving a bit of some backstory of the plot to the original film before it leads into the new entry to give an idea of where we are in the narrative. The original film introduced us to the main emotions of a 11 year old girl named Riley that consist of upbeat Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear and we get the aspects of how things work inside the mind of memories being displayed in orbs and based on the colour of the orb coinciding with the emotion it is based on and some of them becoming core memories that make Riley who she is. This soon gets thrown into disarray when her family up and moves from Minnesota all the way to San Francisco and soon feels a mix of emotions with everything new to deal with. This becomes much more concerning when Joy and Sadness accidentally get themselves sent out of headquarters and trapped in long term and must work together, overcome differences and get back to HQ to help Riley who has been in the reins of Anger, Disgust and Fear to the best that they can try to. The film explores the basis about the aspects of emotions and how a sense of change can be scary and can come with the added element of mixed emotions that 2 can combine and make things a lot to handle and the way it is presented and shown is great, visually appealing, funny and heartfelt all mixed into one that stands as one of Pixar's best works.

But how does the sequel follow up on the narrative for the emotions inside this girls head and what new situations will they find themselves in now. Well let us delve into the plot of this long awaited follow up and see what they have to offer:

"The Emotions of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger have been running a successful operation of the mind of Riley who has entered into her teenage years. However things becomes a lot more messy when the biggest issue faced in anyone's life kicks in: Puberty, just as Riley and her friends are heading to a Hockey camp weekend that will help in their new school life. This comes to an affect when Headquarters becomes into disarray with dealing with some new emotions such as Ennui, Embarrassment, Envy and the leader of the new group of Anxiety and is about to throw everything into Chaos."

of course it is the only natural progression for the plot of this film to continue on with Riley becoming older and building on the case that as a child gets older they will be experiencing some new changes and emotions (hey we all went through them and we all went through that Awkward phase (that you experience from the age of 12 to 29) and as it is known, aging is cringe. Anyway it makes sense to build on the narrative of how things will change with anyone and dealing with the likes of new emotions will become a lot of things to handle at one time and lead to some messy outcomes and I think that the plot works well for the most case. Some small elements of the plot can get a little messy and feel a bit quick to happen but I think in the sense of things it works out well in the long form and they work an element of it in the end but overall I think the narrative told her is really great and strong.

Story: 8.5-9

An onslaught of new feelings

Of course as I mentioned in the story section that with the change of new points in life like becoming a teen and going through puberty, there is going to be another aspect that comes along with it and that is the addition of new characters and emotions and this has a select number of appearance old and new that we can talk about and get into the discussion about what can come from the cast and the opinions of them throughout this film

Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman)
Before we go inside the mindscape itself, let us talk on the focal character these emotions drive and that is with the character of Riley. A bit of time has passed since the first film with this jumping forward around a year from the end of the original with her recently turning 13 and heading into puberty and the focus of just Riley through this narrative as she deals with new changes and feelings at a Hockey camp weekend from skills, friendships, future plans and so much more that things can become a lot to handle. I think the way they present Riley in this film feels genuine and realistic of how many of us deal with the changes in ourselves and it feels more genuine and not overly over the top and this was well done with the basis that they got a group of teens in every few weeks to get feedback and make her feel more authentic and it seemed to have worked out well in the end and I like the character development of this character as it felt real and genuine.

Joy (Amy Poehler)

So lets start with the ray of sunshine in the mind and we go with our girl Joy. We saw the most development with Joy in the original to learn that other emotions are as important as her and mixing some will also come into play and it is showing that the likes of her lesson she learns at the end of the original was not just a one off lesson and actually keeps it into the new one as well and in the process will learn some important lessons along the way (which I will get to in the extra segment of this review). I always liked Joy as a character and is always an emotion that for a long time was the main crutch on the controls in my head and is one that I would strive to do myself even when things can feel messy or affect it but I like the development of her character over the 2 films and would love to see her grow more with any more films in the series in the future but yeah, a great character overall from the original and follow up.

Sadness (Phyllis Smith)

Now on an emotion that lately have been feeling a lot with one other emotion is the little precious blue thing of Sadness. Like I mentioned with Joy, both of them went on a journey to get back to Headquarters and in the process Joy learned to respect and appreciate Sadness when she felt she was not really needed as much but learned that all emotions are just as needed as being happy and build that stronger bond. This one she is not really with the main group for a lot of the film by the middle point but they come together to help them in some form with their past knowledge and it is nice to see Sadness being seen as useful throughout the film and there is moments that are quite sweet to see that would be an afterthought in the original of the bond her and Joy have and the kind of relationship that she would have a bit with the new emotion of Embarrassment and I like the use they have with her in this and love to see her grow more overtime (and also like to not have the sadness too).

Anger (Lewis Black)

An emotion myself really never experiences (unless pushed to a very far threshold) but is always ready to blow their top when the moment occours is with Anger. Anger was one of the group of emotions that had to try and act happy like joy in the original with the other 2 emotions to discuss and that results for that ended up with a mixed opinion and to an idea that nearly made Riley run away from home. This new one sees them get more of a focus in this one with the other emotions as they make their way through long-term to find something important and in the process help with solutions and giving some fine words of encouragement to keep everyone motivated when things are falling apart or getting messy which is something I would not think from the concept of Anger himself but in all honesty it feels really nice to see that some emotions may seem one sided but they do have some good intentions in them and Anger provides it as well as a few good laughs in the film as well and I like they continue the development of the emotion overtime.

Fear (Tony Hale)

One that feels like an offset of the newer ones and one that we all feel at some point in time is the sense of worry of things we see and that comes to us in the form of Fear. Fear is the embodiment of the emotion that will protect us from the things that we see and it is a case that we get the idea of so many million possibilities that the likes of anything we see in our daily lives could be super dangerous when its the mind just overthinking things (The most common thing I always have everyday) and I can understand the likes of him trying to be a backup Joy in the original is something that would be stressful for something with a lot of fear. So there is 2 things I can bring up about this character for this sequel that I have. The first is of course that Fear has seen a voice actor change as it looks like Bill Hader was not back for this sequel and some reasons I heard was due to a Pay dispute (which also occurred with another character I will talk about in a moment) and was replaced with Tony Hale (who also voiced the new character of Forky in Toy Story 4) and in all sense he does a decent job as the voice and while it is noticeable and a little distracting, he works well enough for the role and sounds close to the character before hand. The other point I have about the character is that I feel he is a bit underused for this film in some sense where I feel because of Anxiety that he gets a little sidelined and just feels like throughout the journey he kind of just makes a bit of mockery about the journey in general. He does have his moments for sure in this one but I feel in some sense he just feels a little sidelined compared to the original but does enough that he is serviceable to the narrative.

Disgust (Liza Lapira)

The last of the original emotions that we will be delving into giving some sass and keeping away from the gross things to not look lame is with the Green girl of Disgust. Her whole form is making Riley look fashionable and of course as I mentioned to make it out that she does not make her look lame and was one of the other emotions left in HQ to make her happy when Joy and Sadness got trapped outside in the original. In this one as I mentioned we learn of the emotions all taking a trip to the realm of long-term and have to obtain something important and also get back and stop Riley from changing massively and she does have her moments in this as well and some funny moments here and there and get a bit more of a development with her in this one compared to the first for the most part with a fair few good scenes of her standing out. This is also the 2nd person to get a voice change from the original as it was also the case towards Mindy Kaling not returning due to the pay dispute (I also will emphasize that she does have another voice role with Pixar as she plays Val in the Monsters at Work series so I don't see why she would act like this) but I think the voice change of Liza Lapira does a really great job and does a strong performance of the character that fits her tone well enough. Sure there is some elements that she feels slightly underused near the end but I think that she has enough good moments and scenes to make it work overall as a likable character even when a lot of things disgust her.

Anxiety (Maya Hawke)

So lets get into the new emotional baggage that has found themselves taking vacancy in Headquarters and we shall start with the big focus one from the marketing and the emotion that has been driving my mindset for a really long time is of course the leader of the new group of Anxiety. So Anxiety is the embodiment of the emotion that will protect us from the things that we cannot see and will plan out all of the possible scenarios that can come from any possible scenario that can happen from the array of mixed emotions that we do not expect. In this she is seen as unclear if they would be an antagonist for the film but I think its not the level of being redeemable and just is more misunderstood and I think she is the standout to the film cause I feel it really resonated with me that this emotion is always thinking so many steps ahead in planning out everything and that sometimes things can go wrong and make everything more messy and put into hyperdrive but I will not go too deep into that just yet as I will delve more into it later in the review, but I will say that besides Joy, Anxiety was my favourite edition of this film and probably the standout in general.

Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser)

The next of the new emotions, the only new male emotion to appear from the group and in some sense of what I feel like a bit lately for reasons is with the emotion of Embarrassment. So the likes of this emotion of course is the likes of we do something awkward or cringey that it leads to us getting flustered and sometimes want to curl up and die perfectly explains this emotion to a T and I love this character as while he is the biggest of all of them in the group, he is such a softie that means well and just worries so much. He does have a good dynamic that he does help as much as he can and as I mentioned briefly earlier, there is a nice dynamic between him and Sadness that their is a bond and a sense of some connection between them and I love that little dynamic they have. He does not speak much or really at all in this film but even with minimal dialogue, he still makes a likeable and reasonable place in the cast of growing emotions and hope to see more of them in the future (and most case just have to look in the mirror).

Envy (Ayo Edebiri)

Now from the biggest to the smallest new emotion to the group that came along with the changes is with the hyper little emotion of Envy. Envy would be the emotion that has a sense of jealousy that will want to fit in by copying the qualities of some other people that they come across and this is evident of wanting to fit in and be like the older girls for Riley to become a part of for when she heads into High school. Now if there is anything I can say about Envy is that they feel a bit underused in this film and not getting much to do from the new emotions and from all of them in general as they have some very minimal uses of just making quick decisions for Riley to fit in and being a sort of voice of reason or a yes girl for Anxiety in their plans and ideas. It was the case that they are essentially a shorter version of Disgust and I am sure they could've worked out a lot more by having those 2 cross paths with one another more but I guess they wanted to work a different narrative with this one first but I am sure they ca develop her character more and have her cross paths with Disgusts a little more in any future follow ups but at the moment they are the most underused of the group.

Ennui (Adele Exarchopoulos)

Ending on the last of the new emotions is the one with the level of sass and the one that puts pro in procrastination is the emotion of Ennui, which if you do not know means the boredom. The likes of this emotion gives of the vibe of just going along with whatever they are involved with with little lack of engagement or excitement and the basis of how they show this emotion in action perfectly captures that tone and honestly is such a mood and we can appreciate the craft that went into her form that they do not even go to the level of standing at the console and have it all controlled from her phone. I think the way they present her in this is really well done and has some funny moments present throughout the film and there has been a vocal discourse online saying that she is the real antagonist of the film but it is hard to say and will need to look into that myself but overall I think how they use her works well in this as well and hopefully they will have more of her in more follow ups down the line.

Other emotional elements and characters

The last of them I want to give is a little bit of some focus of some minor other characters that make a presence and while not have much of a big presence I have some minimal thoughts to them.

So there is one other emotion that is introduced with the other 4 and that is with the character of Nostalgia of one that will reminisce about the good old days (when they may have been about 30 seconds) and see everything through Rose tinted Glasses. There is not much to say about her character as she only really appears a small handful of times but she does have some funny lines and concepts for someone to have at that age but I am sure we will learn and see more of her down the line.

Next we will focus on Riley's confidants of her best friends of Bree and Grace. These 3 have a close knit bond with one another and are always with each other through it all, that is until a conflict presents itself at the beginning of the film that changes some things and see a dynamic shift happen. So its a case with this is that I feel some of this feels a little bit sudden that they specify that something will be happening to them and then just change that quick that it feels a little bit of tonal whiplash but it is not far off of the ideas of realism (to some degree). I think they get underused after the beginning and not make some appearances here and there throughout the film but some of it feels a little messy but I think for the drama that it can provide (even just a little) makes some sense and was not to a level that it annoyed me of its approach.

This one I can keep a fair bit brief but on the likes of Riley's Parents, they are not really in it that much as it is more of a focus on Riley and her friends at the hockey camp and the emotional turmoil inside her head. They have some moments at the very beginning and the very end and that is really all they have to show but it is a case that what is presented at the beginning still has that strong bond and love of that small family dynamic and they haven't been totally ruined. It would be nice to have seen more of them in the film (maybe a moment of Riley with her parents in the middle of the film of helping with some dynamic of not being sure what to do and they can help in some way) but I am sure they can be established more in a possible 3rd film.
The last of the character that I can talk on without going into a group that I will be keeping secret for avoiding spoilers is with the cool girl of the camp and that is with Val. She is seen as this big shot Hockey Player who had a strong acceptance into the camp as a freshman and is one that sees Riley become acquainted for helping with the transition to a new school. I do like Val as a character of her being open and approachable and not as some form of a mean girl aura that sees that a lot is put on Riley and is there to help her and their dynamic is good in this. Sure I feel we could learn a little more about her of seeing that her emotions have some conflict in some way but also I feel that their is some sense that this is a possible chance that her and Riley could have some form of romantic feelings that could've been initially built upon but I guess they will cover that more in a later film and wanted to avoid some messy drama from audiences for the moment (which happened with another Pixar film with some area of tackling puberty with Turning Red that initially was Mei and Miriam were possibly going to be a thing that we saw briefly with Priya with the Goth Girl at the party) but I can see them tackle it in the 3rd film or any other adventures in these mindsets.

Overall, the characters in this still feel very charming and fun and the new additions add some much needed creativity with their inclusion to help bolster the appeal of the characters. Sure some characters feel a little underused or not to the full potential and some have their problems or could've been present in the feature more but at the end of the day with such a large number of characters to talk on it was bound to happen in that way but at the end of the day they way they are shown works really well and all this emotional baggage is put to use in a very good way

A world concocted inside your mind

Now if there is a case of something I can really give a lot of praise for is the likes of the animation and the visual aesthetic of the world both inside the mind and out in the world of reality and I have to give so much praise and applause to the studio of Pixar for really giving such a striking contrast and the wonderful aesthetic to the world present throughout this film and most of their other movies too (now if Disney cannot affect them too much and try to reduce the employment at that company cause they really give so much love and care to their film that would be great). The likes of the animation of course is a step up from the original with the likes of detail and sharper visuals and it is still a case that the original still looks fantastic even 10 years on, but it really seems the sense of animation goes a long way, particularly inside the mind of Riley with some familiar places from the past like Long-term, Imagination land and Headquarters all having that appeal look and flair from the original with some slight new additions to add to it all with one place that I want to bring up is the realm below headquarters where while we have the concept of the core memories (I know I have my own and some important that will always be some of them) we learn of the new location that creates what we learn at the beginning of the film of the "sense of self" the elements that create the core traits of what we strive to be to form this beautiful mosaic of bright strands, colourful orbs of memories in the stream of consciousness that form the basis with core memories of who Riley is and the way its presented is beautiful and the aspect that sometimes the mind can change with it is well presented and I may delve a little into it later but there is so much of it inside the mind that is visually appealing to look at.

Same is said on the outside world of the detail and more realism compared to the colourful more cartoony world of the mind with the humans looking real and authentic in design and appeal contrasting with the lush landscapes of the outdoors of scenic forests, the landscapes of San Francisco, to the detail of the Hockey Camp grounds and the rink that make it feel close to realism when all is done in animation and have to applaud the efforts of creating 2 different world that could clash but work so well overall.

This is also where I bring to the focus of the characters where it is a case that as they grow older, they get some slight new changes to them with more focus detailing between the original and its sequel in terms of slight changes in height and colour change (very slightly) as well as more of a fuzzy texture being more present on the characters. This also comes to play with the new emotions as well as I think in all sense Anxiety perfectly captures what they look like as well as how I look and feel with my messy hair most of the time, Embarrassment has that look that captures that look with the hoodies and pants of being so scares of it all of wanting to hide inside ones self from the embarrassment of it all, ennuis level of bland clothes and drooping socks and hair and Envy being small but can pack a lot of jealousy when you don't expect it. This also comes to play with the main girl of Riley of looking a lot different from her original look in the first film with some new aspect such of being taller, longer hair, full of braces and a few spots here and there as she just hit the cringe era of puberty (although as the special someone I watched this film with said after that they hoped they would've had a few more spots on her face to look a little more authentic and looking upon it now I would have to agree with that as she got off easily from the animators but I'll let it slide for now. But overall I think it is an excellent working of the film in general and how its presented works wonders

Presentation: 9.5-10

We got to think on what to write about

So we shall get onto the writing and I will agree on the sense that I can appreciate with the likes of this film that they give their effort of making dialogue and explaining everything make sense and have a good flow to it all of feeling like some real flavour text for what some people would talk to each other in the real world as well as the likes of how the emotions would feel and react in a way of their emotional traits well enough. I think it builds off well with the original with the emotions that they feel the developing characters from the first to the 2nd and it is good to see with the writing they acknowledge some changes from the end of the first and keep it in some form in the sequel. Granted with one or 2 on that end feel slightly different in some form but I think in the larger image it is fine and not massively different that it feels like a different character then the emotion present. I think to the sense with the new emotions that they capture the tone and traits of them really well, especially with Anxiety of being fast talking, stumbling over their words and being hyper aware all the time just fits her tone so well.

This also comes in the area of the humour and I do say I enjoyed a fair amount of visual puns and jokes with one of my favourites that was shown in the 2nd trailer was with the Sar-chasm and how it works itself in the narrative and did crack me up a fair bit as well as some other aspects that I do not want to spoil as there is some good jokes and humour. Sure some don't always stick but I think it has a fair balance with it connected with Pixars other strength of the emotional aspects and I will say there are moments that I will bring up in that extra segment where I felt it and I will not lie to myself and say that I did get emotional myself watching this and feeling some moments of it resonating with me and it shows that even after people say that the studio is losing its charm, I don't think it ever left and is still present and always provide something great and overall balances out the humour and the heart well when it needs to be, as Joy puts it in the film "Let it out, we needed this" (I believe, I may be misquoting but it is close).

Music heals the mind

This section I am keeping brief in the sense of one I cannot delve too much into it as my knowledge on the section is often eh and the other is that I do not have much issues with this section but I will say the music for the film is still great overall. Taking over the reigns in this film in the music department is Andrea Datzman, who worked initially as a prior assistant orchestrator for the first films composer of Michael Giacchino, making her the first woman to score a Pixar film and I have to give it the music and soundtrack is great with a fair mix of some new additions to the film and a mix of some of the classic tracks in there as well with the theme for the original (Bundle of Joy) getting a bit of an updated reprisal mixed in there and honestly I think the tone and music fits for moments of action like out on the rink for a hockey games to more slow tones for somber moments or moments of shock or even some moments of joy here and there. Sure I would like maybe one or 2 other tracks from the original in there as well but I think the more of the new with some callbacks to the classic works just as well and I will complain on it too much.

Deep thoughts and points and what resonated with me so much

So this is one that I am not giving a score, I am not giving a critique to but rather for this section I wanna talk on the aspect of something that really resonated with me in this film and it comes to the likes of finding ones self and seeing how things like this are portrayed in a way (and this section may be a little sloppy with trying to describe it and I may end up getting emotional with trying to tell it but I want to get a focus to it all). So it is a case that we know one of the major players of this new film is with some new emotions and while some of them are relatable to being present there is one that of course I want to really get a focus on with that I would be heavily acquainted with and a lot more lately and that is with the character of Anxiety. So we all know the case that many people as they grow older will experience Anxiety in some form of another whether it is a fear of the future, getting a job, taking the next step in life's journey or so much more that some will stick around and pop up now and again at points when worry kicks in and sometimes it will linger around and often stay for some other people and won't seem to leave. It shows the case that the filmmakers and director of the film Kelsey Mann, took inspiration into the research of emotions and psychology to really get to the tone of fitting what this character is like and how hyperactive and quick and sometimes a bit of uncomfortable they can get when it comes to pushing some other emotions to the edge of the mental and social capabilities that it is on the cusp of falling to a downward spiral. The emotion can feel the level of wanting to be prepared for now and the future and worries about every single small detail, similar to the likes of Fear who worries about the likes of things we can see in the present and has reasons of things ending up as a complete disaster. There are moments where we see the aspect of her consuming some form of energy or beverages throughout the film that fit the tone of the moment that she is feeling from the likes of coffee for energy and to be more focused, multiple caffeinated energy drinks for when she is stressed or over working and the likes of some herbal tea for more to calm or null the stress in the process which helps to perfectly capture the feeling of things in this field of the different types of anxiety and how it feels when having the certain beverages shown that it feels relatable.

So this is the only time I am really going to spoil an aspect of the film near the end so if you haven't seen it and want to I would advice to skip to the next section but if you have or are interested then some may know what I am referring to and that is their own interpretation of representing a panic attack which we have seen a few times in recent memory of animation and done well (besides one and you know what I am talking about if you've seen the review for said thing). This also relates to the element of the "sense of self" as an aspect of the film sees see Anxiety learn about the realm below HQ and sees the likes of changing the one present before they appeared by adding more of her memories into the mix to shape Riley into a new person that will help for the future but it will soon be seen that the consequences become apparent soon enough and realize that what she thought she was doing was good but soon spiral out of control to the point where she causes a situation that leads to a creation of a whirlwind of emotions to clutter the control console of moving at breakneck speed to try and fix things and find a solution that it becomes overwhelming to the level that it affects the outer world with Riley taking these affects into the form of a panic attack and how it is shown felt so real and well done in its interpretation, similar to how it felt with the likes of the Puss in Boots sequel and the recent Spider-verse short film of The Spider Within and when it is done right and shown in the form of someone that had that experience it can make them feel seen and connect more to the project in the process.

And that is how I felt when I saw this scene play out and where I felt a lot of the emotional beats. there are other aspects in the film that hit the emotions as well but this one stuck out to me the most as it was something that has been with me for a very, very long time and has only really amplified a lot recently that I experience it almost on the daily where I stress and worry about a lot of things that goes on in my life that I am not going to delve too much into at all as its personal matters but the affects come in the form of not really being able to sleep, points where I may be out and about somewhere like a walk or shopping or at some event at a point in time where even if things are not so crowded that I feel that sense of feeling overwhelmed a lot and worried of where or what might happen (which has happened a few times in public over the past week but kept it hidden to not cause too much until it takes control and need to get out of there) and to the points where I would break down a lot when I do not expect it and just well up with tears and contributes to the worry a lot that I hold in. Sometimes I find ways to explain it in some ways or tell those I trust and care deeply for, but sometimes its that sense where you have what you want to say all written out in your mind and sometimes it will come out as it but a lot of time to me, they hit a barrier and it comes out in sections and points that make it a bit messy or not make much sense and could be in a case of overthinking that you will say something that is going to hurt others you care about and are afraid of it all of the outcome that plays in your head a lot of the time that it can affect the form of sense of self to where it feels it is all over the place and change to what it once was or become lost or not fully replaced and make things much more grim and lead to a loss or feeling of ones self that I have felt in moments that it worries me a lot and hope that some things I hope and wish for can happen and fix cause it is a lot. I am sure a lot of other people who have seen this beautiful film about emotions and watched this scene in particular may have felt similar things to it themselves of living with that emotion in their mind (I am sure the important person I saw it with may have felt some things about the scene themselves) but that is one that I felt from it and wanted to be open with it all of how the scene connected with me and just lay it all out from what I felt and how scenes like this feel genuine and show the pain and fear any can go through but you may not see from an outside perspective.

Things that can cause some headaches

So moving from a more somber and heavy tone, I am going to give my few points of some issues and critiques that I have with this film and there is not a lot but of course like many media projects there is always some aspects that can be improved for future installments, but le me give my few small points:

Story: This is only really down to the likes of some story beats like some elements with the friends and maybe a little on pacing stuff that it is not too heavily brought up in the film but in all sense it is just some minor critiques may have been fleshed out a little more to improve the narrative to give some more of a crutch but the overall rest of the story works well enough as is.

Characters: This is just the case of some small issues with one or 2 characters feeling a little different (mainly just a bit with Fear) and some other characters feeling underused or could've benefitted more (Mainly in the emotions with new character Envy and some side characters including ones I am not going too much into of keeping that from spoilers but wish they had more of an appearance) but I am sure if more projects from this series is made that we will see them get developed or fixed in more adventures.

Presentation: Just a small nitpick that I may be wrong on in a way but I would say their could be some very minor pacing issues that some things happen very quickly (like I mentioned in the story section) and with the new emotions introduced before the original group are suppressed that given a few extra minutes to it but I may be overthinking it and the pacing and issues are perfectly fine as it is.

Writing: Mainly on just some of the aspects to the story not getting fleshed out fully (small elements) and just some jokes feeling a little flat but it is not too much of a major aspect.

Music: Small thing of just having one or two more tracks from the original in there as well with all the new stuff and original but its easy enough to fix on.

but that is all I really have in terms of my points of issues with this film and it is not too heavy but that is all I can give for sure of my issues to it all.

A powerful display or more to bottle it up?

But overall, while there was a very small concern of a follow up, it was very quickly dashed by the time the marketing and release of the film came out and I think personally it was a much needed film to come out that will appeal to audiences young and old from fun and colourful for the kids and for making the adults or those that were young with the original feeling so much with this new one and deserves as of where it is my possible film of the year so far. Sure it has the small nitpicks here and there but I think that it works itself well enough to really make them not that noticeable and provide a fun entertaining film that anyone can enjoy and no matter with all of the new emotional baggage  that comes with the film, it is unpacked well enough and if there is a chance that a new entry in this series can happen then I would not decline the idea and feel it can work with so many more emotions to tackle and deal with but for now lets savour this one for a while as a core memory in film.

Final Scores:
Story: 8.5-9
Characters: 8-9
Presentation:9.5-10
Writing: 8-9
Music: 8-9
total score: 42 - 46/50 or 84-92% (B+-A)
