Weird Mind News Room Episode 75: July 29th - Aug 4th

 *music for colouring with Crayons*

Hello and welcome to a very quiet week of Weird Mind News Room where this week we have the contents of New releases for the week, some possible trailers and the minimal amount of content for News stories for the week. So it will probably not be too much of this weeks episode but let us delve into what is out for this week.

Drawing a picture of new releases

Movies
Harold and the Purple Crayon

We start the new releases with the new form of a classic story for the new generation of children that has now seen a form of a follow on of the original book that no matter how old you have, the untapped potential of the imagination is still present as it is clearly seen with the release of the film adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon. The film sees Harold now fully grown up using his magical crayon to travel with him and his friends into the real world and use all means of his crayon to change the world one idea at a time. But when his magical crayon falls into the wrong hands, it will soon take all of the power of creativity and imagination to save his world the real world in the process. Reception to this film has not been that great that while the concept does seem appealing, the simplistic nature and tone of the original story loses its focus with going a bit too big and keeping it a little too formulaic but I am sure it is a fine enough film for a family watch and if you want something simple then you can check this out now in cinemas.

Rebel Moon: The Snyder Cuts

So this next one you may be thinking that these films have already come out and that I have already mentioned them on this weekly series and you would be right, with just a new added aspect to it all as we are returning to the streaming giant of Netflix and focusing on the creation of the sci-fi world of a director who's rabid fanbase will be non stop flooding social media signing these films high praises as we have recieved the double bill of the Rebel Moon Directors cut. This will of course be the extended versions of the films that will follow Korra, a young farmer aid with a secretive past who goes on a journey with a confidant from her home planet in search of fierce warriors to help defend their home from the massive armada of Motherworld and protect their resources and the death and bloodshed of innocents. So the initial reactions of the original releases were not that well recieved and it is still the same in terms of reception as there is some slight more improvement to Part 1, they do not add much to the film besides being an hour longer each (Part 1 is now 3hrs 14 mins and Part 2 2Hrs 56mins), even more slow-mo and more violent kills of blood and a lot more sex and Boobies (those boobies are not going to entice me to this anyway). I have yet to watch the 2nd part yet but will do so before I check out this extended cut films now on Netflix.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie

But if you would prefer something a bit more lighter, colourful and have a certain absorbent sea sponge then you are in luck as there is another new film on the same streamer that will see us heading under the ocean waves for new adventures of the talking sponge and his friends with the all new film of Saving Biking Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. The new film will see the entirety of Bikini Bottom be snatched from the ocean floor by a mysterious laboratory on the surface world in Texas and will soon see Sandy and SpongeBob head above the surface to find out the mystery and stop it, find their friends and restore the city back to its rightful place in the ocean. Reception to this film has been a little more mixed with praise to the animation, voice cast and story, though some elements of these spin offs and humour as well as some other elements are a little mixed in appeal (plus the case that this film has been leaked onto Twitter for about 8 months at this point all the way back in January) but if you want a new underwater adventure with everyone's favourite Sponge then you can catch this new film out now on Netflix.

TV Shows
Batman Caped Crusader
Now onto the 1st of 2 tv series of this week is bringing the vengeance and will prove that he really is the Knight as after initially being threatened of being shelved by the studio that says they are the only storytellers left in Hollywood and then cancel stuff for money, we got the long awaited follow up / spiritual successor of the Animated series with the new series of Batman Caped Crusader. The series will be focused on a Younger Bruce Wayne in his early years as the crimefighter in this noir based tale of Batman dealing with the dealings of corruption and crime in his city that all have smaller stories that build pieces to a larger arching narrative that will see him prove to the city of foes and new allies that the city is safe from the aid of the Dark Knight. Reception for this series has been very highly praised as being a strong successor to the beloved animated series, its animation, voice cast and overarching story. I myself have watched a few of the first episodes and I agree that it is really good so far and you can check it out for yourself as the full first season is now available on Amazon Prime.

Futurama Season 12

The final new release of the week is seeing us jump forward 1000 years into the future to return to more new adventures with the intergalactic delivery crew as we have an all new 12th season of Futurama. This season will follow the crew of Fry, Leela, Bender and the rest of Planet Express as they deal with new situations and comment on new gimmicks such as NFTs, popular Tv series, Silicon valley and much more new adventures in the vast universe of the future. This season has seen some very positive reception with praise for its huour, characters and story that still feel fresh and entertaining after all of these years and if you want to check it out for yourself, the first episode of the new season is available now on Hulu and on Disney+ with a new episode releasing every Monday.

Trailers of the smaller capacity

Spellbound
So this week is a bit of a dry spell for news and trailers (which I get after the likes of Comic Con and other forms) and was looking like the first week where we may not have a news and trailers section but I did manage to find some small options with the first one coming to us from a new studio of animation that have some alumni from Pixar and other studios as they bring a new form of magical adventure with a trailer for the upcoming animated film of Spellbound. The film is set in the magical world of Lumbria and will follow Princess Ellian (voiced by Rachel Ziegler) who must go on a quest to find a way to break the curse of a spell that has turned her parents into Monsters and build the bond back with her family. So the base of this concept has been done before with films such as Brave and Shrek having elements of magical kingdoms with some twist for one of the focal characters having a transformation and they go on a journey to resolve the issues but I think in all sense it does not look too bad and seems harmless enough that it has nice visuals and interesting designs. The jokes can be a little here and there but it happens with most jokes in trailers and stuff but you can catch this new animated film when it drops on Netflix on November 22nd.

Terminator Zero

The next trailer will see some of the rise of the machines in a new stylized animated form very soon as we have recieved another new full trailer for the upcoming release and new take of Terminator Zero. The series will be set back in 1997 on the eve of Judgement Day in Japan and follow Malcolm Lee, a technical programmer who has been developing a new AI system that they are developing to compete with Skynet. Soon he finds himself and his three children being pursued by an unknown robot assassin while also sent aid from a mysterious soldier from the far future of 2022. So I have already mentioned this a week or 2 ago but I think the series of films have been quite good in a mixed array here and there and this series does look like it is giving a unique form look at this series and it looks very interesting and I will probably give this a look when the series will be releasing on Judgement Day itself on Netflix on August 29th.

Speak No Evil
So one last trailer was one of the backups that I kept from the overwhelming amount from last week that will be giving us a bit of a horror aesthetic that you never know the people you will meet on holidays or other forms can be quite a strange bunch as we have a trailer for the new psychological thriller of Speak No Evil. Being a remake to a 2022 Dutch film, this film will see a dream holiday turn into a living nightmare when an American couple and their daughter spend the weekend at a British family's idyllic country estate but things soon get unsettling and must find a way to escape before things become worse. So I first learned of this film when I watched the new Quiet place and I was honestly intrigued by it with seeing James McAvoy taking the role of another unhinged horror character (which personally he should've gotten some award recognition for his performance from Split) and it does have an intriguing tone and I may give this a look into when the film releases into cinemas in a little over a months time on September 13th.

A lighter week for news

Westerns, sadistic games and coming of age in space: the release announcements

So on the only bit of news that I can provide for this week is not really anything massive but what I did find that can provide some context is with a few announcements for some upcoming projects and updates to some of them here and there in terms of release dates, first looks and overall plans and I will give a quick rundown of them here.

So first off I will start with a quick little update to a film that I had talked about a few weeks ago with another film I already reviewed on this blog and that is with the Kevin Costner passion project of Horizon An American Saga. The last update I provided was that the 2nd part to this planned so far 4 film series was recently removed from the schedule from its initial August 16th release due to the poor reception and box office of the recently released 1st part (although I have heard that the streaming numbers of VOD have actually been doing well) and there was a question of when we would get this continuing part of a western of its plan and it looks like we have a form of when we will get first word for said project. Earlier this week it was announced that the film itself will be making its debut as one of the closing films at the upcoming Venice film festival in September and will be shown out of competition alongside the new Beetlejuice sequel as well as the upcoming film of wolfs with Brad Pitt and George Clooney and will be in the festival alongside the Joker sequel. It will be worth to see if this will also provide the context of when the 2nd part will be released if it will go to cinemas like part 1 or straight to streaming  as well as giving an idea of when the other 2 parts will be released but I am sure we will have to see when all of this plays out of the outcome for the massive western.

The games will be beginning again real soon as the biggest question for a lot of people who are fans of the streaming giant of Netflix was when we would see the continuation of the sadistic Korean series that saw people play messed up children's games for massive cash prizes? Well thankfully those questions have been answered as in conjunction with some visual connection to the ongoing Olympics, Netflix dropped a small cryptic teaser confirming the release date for the 2nd season of Squid Game which has now been confirmed to be releasing on December 26th of this year for the full new season. That is not the only news as well as it has been confirmed that the series will be ending with a 3rd and final season and the gap for that one will be much shorter as the final season will be dropping sometime next year meaning most case that this season will be a 2 parter or they filmed both seasons back to back and did not want to overdo a show like this which I fully get. It will be intriguing to see what type of messed up games and mysteries will be involved in this final duology of seasons but I look forward to unwrapping this violent follow up around the holidays.

The 3rd update for the week is taking us to a galaxy far far away as we have an update, first look and release for the next entry in the Star Wars saga and this comes with a series that has been announced for a while and this comes in the form of the series of Skeleton Crew. For a while we have only seen one image for this project in the form of the character that Jude Law will be playing in this series but since then things have been quiet until just this week when we got a new look at the series of some of the other cast including a new blue elephant looking alien as well as a confirmation of a release date for the series which will now be dropping on December 3rd. After that not much has been shared but we know this series will see a group of younglings discover something about their home planet, get lost in the vast galaxy and must find a way to get back home and may be a bit of a fantasy coming of age story to it all. I am sure we will probably get more information about the whole project with the upcoming event of D23 next weekend and we will learn more about it there and some other Disney based properties in full (maybe even a trailer for the show) and will see if this will have appeal after the divisive Acolyte series (a show I see as having problems but is not the worst thing ever made).

There is one more little update that just came in with this news and this with a little update to Marvel. So I give an insight into the Comic con news last week with Marvel (and was initially going to give my thoughts on RDJ as Doom if there was no news this week) but I made mention that one of the projects they skipped over was on the film of Blade that has been in some development issues since its announcement in 2019. Many of the speculation was that the film was being silently cancelled to rework for the likes of him appearing in say Daredevil or a new season of Moon Knight but it looks like that is not the case and in fact it is still planned for its release in November of 2025. It is unclear why they didn't bring it up at the conference last week but most case they were probably finalizing some aspects and couldn't announce them just yet so maybe we could see this getting some info at D23 next week with all the other Marvel stuff they didn't talk about like the tv shows, animation and other planned films besides the big 5 from last week but I hope that they do turn things around and bring the Daywalker into the light real soon.

But what are your thoughts on all of these updates and announcements and which of them are you most excited about and what release dates or outcomes do you see for all of them in particular? Let me know your thoughts on them all down below in the comments.

And with all of that, this brings us to the end of episode 75 of Weird Mind News room and I hope you enjoyed this rather much shorter version this week (it has been a slow news week at least bolstered by some new releases). Let me know of all your thoughts on everything below if you seen them or opinions on the trailers and news and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in the next blog :)

Take Care, Keep being you, Signing Off
Sam H :)
