Barbie Review: Is life in Plastic Really Fantastic?
Barbie Movie Review: Is Life in Plastic Really Fantastic?
This doll has been around for well over 60 years now with the character having learned and become it all where you can think of the career she has done it all, besides according to the Historians of Barbie a job in Business or Finance or community or social care service (and probably more risque form but not getting into how that works and in a case she does have a showgirl doll from about 15 years) and even delved with forms of disabilities and even now becoming a superhero with a range of Barbies crossing over with Batman for the caped crusaders 85th anniversary this year. But we are not delving into the realm of the doll toy itself, but instead we are talking on the world of her film career and to say its a small career is an understatement. As of Writing this review there has been a total of 44 total Barbie film with 43 of them being animated films with the most recent releasing back in March of this year, but we are not delving into all of those ones (maybe I can do it as a big sub special on my YT and see if someone special to me who will also have some words and opinions for this films will join me in watching them) but instead we are talking on the big screen film take that is simply entitled Barbie, a film that defied all odds and became the film to help revive cinema in a lull of a summer box office last year and was in no small part of its appeal, its stars and the once in a rarity event that became known as Barbenheimer with the other film releasing on the same day being Nolan's Oppenheimer (which is part 2 of this review of course) and today I am here (as well as a special few thoughts from someone very important to me) to ask the question of if this film is showing that Life in Plastic is Fantastic or should it have stayed in the box on the shelf? Well I can say that I had the worries that the film was not going to be for me but going to it all that time ago was actually a welcoming appealing film of the love of the character with heart, charm and humour placed throughout and I believe the same was thought from with that special someone and I will be giving my in depth thoughts on the film today.
*Note: This will not that much in terms of massive spoilers, some small ones maybe but I will see as this review goes on. Also the review will be mainly a focus with a bit of a written explanation of the special someone's thoughts on the film in their own segment.
What can a Barbie do?
It is a proven case that I have mentioned the aspect that the likes of the character of Barbie has the concept of "You can be anything" and it is said that the likes of any project of Barbie films and shows can really be anything. Over the course of the other previous animated films with the famous figure, we have seen the likes of roles like Princess, Rockstar, Big Sister, Parent, Pet owner, Mermaid, Queen and many more aspects across the 44 films, so the likes of having one of those concepts of many of the choices that can come from the world of Barbie is anyone's guess as to how this could've turned out which is where the writing and directing Talents of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach came in, alongside the big star of Margot Robbie to create a unique tale that has the appeal for many and also has the element of feeling like a story from the imagination of young women everywhere and what this doll would find themselves up to and I think they work that well in the form of the plot summary that is presented to us below."Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colourful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However when something unexpected starts happen to the Blonde Beauty, they soon end up on a journey into the Real world but will soon discover the joys and perils that will come from living amongst the humans."
So the concept idea about the films narrative of blending the fantasy world of Barbieland and the aspects of the Real World to see that things are a lot different then how it is in that colourful landscape to the mixed appeal of our own reality can be really something intruiging and it helps to open our eyes to the viewers mindset about the perspective of Women that in Barbie Land, the women do all of the big powerful jobs like Doctors, Politicians, professors, culinary and so much more and for the likes of the Ken's (and Allan) they seem to be of an unknown element (its kind of the same in the lore that they don't delve too much into that either of what he normally does) and I think of them going to the real world and discover the truth and learn different things from each of their perspectives is something very deep and thought provoking and I think it is tackled very well in the film. If there was some issue I would have with said movie is that they emphasize about the whole going to the real world and it felt like it was going to be there for most of the film and then return for the finale cause Barbie Land was falling apart, but surprisingly they don't spend a lot of time in the real World. Rewatching it a little while ago, they only spend about a little under 30 minutes in the real world before the rest is in Barbie Land and I get the ideal of it to focus on the place of the iconic doll but maybe giving a little more time in the real world might have helped a little more, but in all sense it is not a massive detrimental affect on the narrative as I think the film is very good in that department and works it well to make you think and provide entertainment from it all too.
Story: 8-8.5
Hi Barbie
Now let me give a little bit of a rundown for this sector as I will normally give a focus to the characters for this next section, but this is where it will get a little bit difficult or more case confusing. You see in the world of Barbie Land nearly all of the women are named Barbie and almost all the Men are named Ken and it will be a case that a lot of them will become confusing as to which ones I am talking about, so I will be giving the titles they are provided and in case I am only focusing on a select few from Barbie Land and the Real world to focus that have a presence and get a bit of screen time, cause if I just said I was talking on Barbie or Ken it would be to wonder which one in particular. Just to clear that up but anyways, there is quite a massive stacked cast to this project with such big names that are recognized and some that many may not know a whole lot but I will delve into some from their world and ours so lets not get to mixed up and lets talk on these icons.Barbie (stereotypical Barbie)(Margot Robbie)
Let's talk firstly with the one that is the center of it all, the Doll that can be anything and that is of course with Barbie or as she is labelled in this film as Stereotypical Barbie. So the likes of this film I feel would all come down to the chosen choice for the main lead as it had been through a few choices that it initially started with..... Amy Schumer and I felt it was that option the film would not be as much a success or appeal as it became and then the others that were considered before it was all finalized was with Anne Hathaway (a choice that would not be a bad pick and would be a 2nd choice) and the other was Gal Gadot (back then sure but there is a mixed appeal with her now but lets not get into that) and where we have the final choice with Margot Robbie in the title role and I think they have struck a perfect selection with this casting as she really has the greatest star power to fit this role to respect it and also provide a greater message and I do think that they made the character that much more appealing from the cast cause sometimes a main lead can make or break a film and personally she is a standout with bringing some good humour, heart and focus mannerisms of Barbie from the imagination of young girls and Kids and translate it into the real world with great enthusiasm. Sure there is some aspects that can feel a little forced or not work properly, but the film does make a joke on it and highlight some things can be counter intuitive which can have a mixed opinion from others but in all sense I think overall she helped to sell the film and become the massive success it is today and is one of the highlights of the cast (which is saying a lot for the massive star line up in this film).
Ken (Beach Ken)(Ryan Gosling)
Of course, if there is any other character that people would be aware of that they would associate with Barbie, it has to the love struck long time on and off partner of Ken and this was a discussion of mixed opinion when it was cast that Hollywood superstar Ryan Gosling was cast in the role on the love interest. Many had some elements of saying that he was a bit too much of an odd choice for the role and that there was a lot of other choices for the role but I think overtime people became much more of appealing to the choice and personally I appreciate the casting cause alongside Robbie's Barbie, Gosling is the other best standout from the film from the personality, the development that he goes through and just the approach with comedy with some of its comedic charm that he exhumes to the film of trying to win the affection of Barbie and also the conflict with the other Kens for her affection (though there is some slight undertones about the whole sexuality of Ken with the other Ken's in the land which is a common theory amongst a lot of people over the 60+ years the dolls have been in the public). Its a case that there is a lot to love about this character, some bits you can question his approach but you can't deny that he has some moves (more on that later), some good comedic form and to me personally was a fun and strong highlight of the characters for the adventures in Barbieland and in the Real World and hopefully if there is a likes of a sequel to this film, I would love to see more of Ken and all of his true Kenergy. Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon)
So in most case as I mentioned at the start of this section that there is a lot of characters in this film named Barbie and Ken and while the likes of most other Kens besides the main was less of an issue to discuss on, there is at least one other Barbie that I can give a least a discussion as they do have some helpful assistance in this narrative and that is the one that is known as "Weird Barbie". This is the Barbie that is a lot different to the ones on Barbie land as this one as the messed up hair, the odd outfits, the abstract aesthetic and is a bit delusional but in all sense she seems to be sane..... I think. Anyway the likes of this Barbie is that she helps the main focus Barbie with discovering the reason as to why she has been experiencing strange things like saying odd stuff about Death and why her feel are now fully flat on the ground and leads her on her quest into the real world to find the answers. In most case this is really all Weird Barbie has to offer which is a lot on the focus of pushing the narrative along and help as a bit of a refuge later in the film but I think it is an alright amount of her presence in the film and does not overdo it in their presence for the project. Granted its also the case that they do not going way too overly weird with it and just a fine balance, maybe a little more odd would've helped but I think it strikes a fine enough balance with how its presented of being weird enough but not overdoing it and I think this Barbie is a fine enough edition to the cast.
Allan (Michael Cera)
There is however one other character in this land of dolls that is a little bit different to all of them as there is only one version of said character and that is with the addition of the long forgotten best friend to Ken of Allan. So the likes of this character is such an obscure aspect as it was a one off edition of a doll from back in the 70s as a form of best friend to help Ken following Barbie's new BF (that I do not think appears in the film) and has not made an appearance since and I thought initially that he was going to be a little throwaway cameo of the legacy of Barbie characters from the past known or forgotten but it was surprising that Allan does get some form of a presence and actually does provide some level of entertainment. Sure in the beginning it is just more of a cameo form but when it goes back to Barbie land for the 2nd half of the film he has much more of a presence and I like what they do with him for the form of relevance he has for the plot. I do hope that it will see a return of this figure in the Barbie range for fans of the character and maybe in a sequel as well cause he provided some entertainment for his appeal but for what its worth they work him in well for the project.
Gloria (America Ferrera)
Now we are heading out of Barbie Land and into the real world and we talk on the first of the real world additions to the cast and we start with Gloria. So Gloria is an employee of the company of Mattel and the mother of the other character we will talk on of Sasha, who was the owner of the Doll that the Main Barbie is based on (this may sound confusing but just go with it) and in some sense is the reason for the change in Barbie's attitude and outcome and why she has to go to the real world for. in all of things I think the performance of America Ferrera is not bad and a decent performance overall, there is just a case that she seems a little underused as the narrative goes on. I think in most case the biggest moment for her was her speech she gives to the Barbie's and the outcasts and discontinued dolls after the whole trouble in Barbieland happens but then after that it kind of feels like she doesn't have much of a bigger presence afterwards that most will just remember the speech. I think in all sense she does a strong performance and helps out a fair bit in the middle part of the film but has a reduced presence near the end but I think in all sense she has her moments, would appeal a bit more till the end but it works to the level they have presented.
Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt)
As for the other edition that I mentioned already is with Gloria's daughter of Sasha. So the likes of this character kind of has that sense of not wanting to play with dolls anymore and sees the likes of Barbie as a negative stereotype for women in the recent form of the industry and all that (a sense of taking on the likes of feminism) but soon gets tangled up in the adventure with her Mom and Barbie of getting back to Barbie land and seeing things are a lot different from when she left and while she seems a bit against the whole thing for a good part of it all but works to help in the end and take over a little with the helping to sort out the trouble in Barbie Land and she starts to turn around in the end in seeing a new perspective (even if it is only a little bit). So the likes of Sasha is a little hit or miss to me but I think that at the end of the film she is likable of a performance even with a little bit of a lack of screen presence. There is one thing I do see that I think there is a certain reason to naming her Sasha as its the name of another competitor doll that are known for their Passion for Fashion (and I think her 3 other friends at that lunch table were supposed to be named as Yasmin, Jade and Cloe) so I wonder if that was supposed to be a jab but I cannot tell. Anyways I have gone a little off focus but I will say that I like the performance by the end, a little bit of getting used to and maybe needed a little more development but it works out all the same.
Mattel CEO (Will Ferrell)
The last of the focal characters I can give a bit of a discussion to is with the essentially villain of the film (if you can call it that) and that is with Will Ferrell's performance of the CEO of Mattel. So the likes of his characters whole focus is making profits and how to bring a mass amount of success to their company in record profits for the quarter and then becomes a panic to get their iconic best seller doll back into Barbie Land cause everything could come crumbling down if nothing is done and becomes the mission to resolve the issues without losing mass amounts of profit. So if its a case that this character is really just there to have a form of a villain role in there but even as a villain they really do not do much and is just there as a placeholder villain that they will only care about profit over decency. Sure most case of his approach is a bit over the top and a little goofy, but you'll get that as its Will Ferrell doing his thing. Sure it could've been better but is just the scapegoat for the real undertone villain of the film (but am not getting deep into that territory). The only discussion I have is that one of the theories I thought of and some others online did as well that could this version of Will Ferrell be the same businessman Will Ferrell from another project based on a popular brand of toy or figures be the same or is this a bit too far fetched (both films were made by Warner Bros so it could but its probably just nonsense).
All other Barbies and Kens and other important people
So to wrap up the characters of the film I will give a bit of a discussion on the likes of some of the other members of Barbie's and Ken's of Barbie Land as they are alright and I like the sense of building on the forms of the different careers and aesthetics that this doll has had over the years and they fit the criteria and have a nice mixed array in the process. The same can be said for Ken for the mixed variety of sports and jobs that they would be associated with (which is a lot less in knowing from the process of the past 60 years) but I think in all sense you can't be too harsh on all the other characters as they are all named Barbie and Ken that it can be confusing to focus on so many at the one time and I feel the wide variety of actors and Actresses in this film fits so well in the variety of choice so I cannot harp on them too long, maybe one or 2 could've had more presence but that could be worked upon for a sequel.
But overall I think the performances in the film are really well done and have a strong main focus leads and some decently good supporting cast. Is it a perfect combination, no not fully, but it is a valid effort all the same. I am sure the likes of this series could have a potential follow up in some regard to develop some of the other characters but I think with what was presented here I think its fine enough, just with a few tweaks to improve some other additions.

Welcome to Barbie Land
If there is one thing that was the debate about how things were going to go for me it was going to be the form of presentation that was going to be seen created for the world for Barbie and thankfully I can totally say that this is a really well made form of providing the concept of those classic toy range with it being more upscaled and presented better with the detail in the likes of the dreamhouses, the convertibles or other vehicles, the pets, accessories and everything under the sun to the point that the likes of stuff looking like it was filmed on the set of one of those advert lots for the normal dolls is very well done attention to detail and props to the whole production team on that whole aesthetic and capturing the look of the iconic sets and ranges. As for the likes of the real world, while I would be more critical of the whole real world aesthetic as it seems like a very basic setting and then the likes its in one of the handful of states that is used for so many films and other projects, I think that it works more here given the likes of the strong contrast from the bright pink, colourful aesthetic of Barbieland compared to the more toned down colour palette and sometimes dreary approach to the real world of showing that we can live in a fantasy world or let the colours be stripped away and show that the real world is not always that easy or perfect and that it takes a toll on a lot of people (trust me I know that a lot the last little while) and by the end they find that balance of the colour and purpose to find that aesthetic morph into the best of both worlds and in all the way I think they did a really great job of that blending well. This also came in the form of the outfits and designs for the different Barbie's, Ken's and other discontinued dolls of that world and I will say that they went all out in the look and aesthetic that they feel like they were real outfits taken from the extensive range and just scaled up and made for the characters and are just bursting with colour and wonder and its amazing of the level of references and concepts work itself so well to this work and all of the designers and creatives on this team should feel very proud of the work and effort put in cause it came out as a big success and works so well overall and I like what they did and honestly I would wear some of those outfits (and that is saying something given I have no style most of the time)

Writing the teachings of the patriarchy
This next section I am going to keep brief as I will be delving into the likes of the writing for the film and I think that it is not bad in the way of the writing and story form as when it focuses on the important elements and themes it works well with taking the important moments serious and not be the level of quick jab reaction comments (i know sometimes people have that in certain situations to cope but thankfully they mostly kept it straight). It does have its moments as well of comedic humor and comedy that work in some forms and some I see the attempts but can feel a little flat in execution here and there but its not eye rolling or uncomfortably bad and not overly forced but could've used a little more work or executed better but it is only in some minor elements. Some moments can feel a little off in the choice of comments or the use of some pop culture references wondering if they were necessary (I know a certain fanbase got mad at a joke about one of their films being used but I think its a small jab at the whole thing) but overall it was bad writing at all, not fully perfect when it comes to some jokes and stuff but overall a very valid effort with some slight tweaks to make it even more great.Writing: 8-8.5
Jams for a Barbie Party
The last of the sections with the focus of my own score is with talking on a section that in most case I do not have a lot of perspective with proper opinion on is with the Music and colour me intrigued but this album does have some really good tracks in different tones and appeal that were formed for both the original score and the soundtrack from Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and it formed some great backing music with some unique tracks and instrumentation of some of the other tracks. But we are not here to talk on the score and much rather talk on the songs in the film and this has a lot of big name musicians and names get their song in the film from Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX and even Ryan Gosling himself. Some of them I find the appeal like Pink and Speed Drive (which has the same audio music for hey Mickey) and then some that really are memorable and would listen to now and again like Dance the Night for the big party near the beginning of the film, What was I made for, a beautiful track that has a lot of meaning (and will say deserving of its award recognition) and then of course the one that I was the most excited for (and the best Award show performance I have ever seen) with Goslings I'm Just Ken as it hits deep but is so full of Kenergy that you cannot hate it and has seen many parodies and covers (and if this does well and other videos then I will give this my own cover if copyright will not affect it) and it all has some appeal and great songs. If there was one issue that I have is that it was missing one track and that was the original song of Barbie Girl from Aqua and while they do have a version of it, its one of those remixed versions with Ice Spice and Minaj and its a bit too much of a mumble rap song and I would've much preferred the classic song from many years ago as a nostalgia track but there is all legal drama and messy stuff with Mattel and Aqua so it is probably why. It is only some minor issues and some that I would change but in all sense it is a very strong soundtrack all the sameMusic: 8-8.5
This Barbie means a whole lot to me and her opinions on the project
So before I move onto the critiques to the film itself I do want to at least give one more special segment to this review and that was with the perspective and thoughts about the film from someone else besides me. You see this film came out around the time of this persons birthday and made it a day out for us to go and see it as they were looking forward to it a whole lot and it was a case that I asked if they would want to be a part of this review when I make it for the likes of this giving her perspective to the whole ordeal and her thoughts on the movie as she very much enjoyed it from what I remember. Now it is a case that they are not here at the moment and in most case they would be a bit camera shy but in all sense they have provided a rundown of their thoughts on the film of their thoughts and opinions and keeping my word I want to read them out and provide this very special Barbie's important thoughts and opinions of the film itself:from my perspective, the movie summed up the unifying trauma of being a woman alive today, and how from birth, there's a sort of doom that all women are pressured to accept from a young age of "I have to live the rest of my life with the knowledge that most men view me as a sex toy; I am not afforded the same rights and privileges as men; and people think I have a lesser intellect because I'm a girl. I have to fit into this box, like these things, talk/walk/act/sit/eat this way, all for the sole purpose of appeasing to the male gaze".
but in Barbie land, girls can be anything and its an accepted truth. it makes me look back and wonder at one point I stopped playing with dolls as a kid and started thinking about how boys look at me. it goes into how little girls are socialized to be likable by men and their #1 goal later in life should to be pretty. i loved how the story overall is quite existential in its plot, but its done in such a way that makes me happy to be alive. everyone has a purpose, and its painful to know that a lot of women loose their sense of purpose because its socially engrained into us that the most important thing in our lives should be to please men. but the Barbie movie gives a glimpse into an alternate world where such societal indoctrinations don't exist, where women can do whatever they wish without having to worry about men trying to 'put them back into their place', and worrying whether they look good while doing it
the part about the Barbie's dumbing themselves down to seduce the kens was all too real as well lol. in the past I sometimes subconsciously dumbed myself down so much to make some of my male peers like me more, as its evident that a lot of men need that sense of power over women in order to feel masculine. and making a man feel masculine from my mere presence was something I played along with to get their romantic attention.
I can understand why the damsel-in-distress trope can be appealing for guys anyway though. it very likely to make men feel needed, more masculine and achieve a sense of purpose from a young age were exposed to narratives in which men are portrayed as protectors and heroes, while women are often depicted as in need of rescue and also to mention that the damsel-in-distress trope can intersect with themes of vulnerability/femininity
looking back on this description of the film, I can really see what she means by her thoughts and opinions cause it really does give a clear perspective on the world of this society that Women thrive more in this world, whereas the Ken's don't get told what they do and where they go or stay in this land and are there just for the attention and affection of Barbie. It really is a striking contrast in our world and society as with so much unsettling things and changes to the rights of women in how they can be of setting their rights back a lot of the time over the last little while and now all over the world, that women are the sense of oppressed or belittled that to some they would only see the mindset that Women are only seen as sex objects, tending to their man and bearing children, when it should be the case that Women can do anything, they can be very smart, they can do whatever they can put their mind to like be an artist, a designer in any field, award winner, athlete, political leader and even to the likes of president or other forms of cool things to see them achieve and not just be this person that has to have a certain look to them or they can't do this or they can't do that cause it gets tiring and I feel for them that so much and hope for better change. I know the important person (or who I call Sunlight) is really someone that I can see do anything and I have seen her grow into someone amazing and talented with her work in design and art and so much more and am always proud of her continued progress and will always enjoy seeing her grow overtime and will always want to be a part of that for now and the far future. I think she gave some real great insight into the film (probably a lot better then me with my ramblings) and maybe we can do this again for another film or series in the future, but I think she said her opinions really well and clear.
Starlight response: 100
This Barbie needs to be recalled
So like all of my reviews, this is where I give my form of critiques and issues with the film and round them up here to easily break down what it is from each section that was a little hot or miss for me to the likes of this production but lets break it down (and don't worry this is not going to be similar to Ben Shapiro's 3 45 minute videos about his disapproval of this film.Story: This one is probably a little bit of a nitpick but it is probably a case of maybe it would've been nice to experience a little more time in the real world outside of Barbie land cause it feels like we spend the first half hour in that world and setting up the journey out there, then Barbie and Ken arrive in LA and feels a bit quick at first, slows down a little afterwards and then by the time Barbie meets Gloria they are heading back and feels like they could've added a little bit more to the real world setting before return to the Barbieworld in disarray. Maybe if there is a sequel that is made we can see that happen of a little more time in that location but I think that is one aspect that could've gotten a small bit more of a presence.
Characters: I feel this is mainly down to the likes of some of the other characters feeling like after they have their moment they just end up on the sidelines like with Gloria and her speech and then after she helps a little with the Barbie's in the end (and its a bit of the same with her daughter but she has a bit more of a development in the end) and then the likes of the placed in villain feels not that evil or well fleshed out at all and is just a bit of a goofball. Maybe some of the other Barbie's and Ken's would've benefitted to having some more presence but I think the likes of the 2 main leads being the highlights help elevate it just that little bit more.
Writing: This comes down to the likes of some critiques with the elements of some comedic tones and jokes that could use a little bit more work and could've been executed better but its only in a small handful of points in the film and the other is that some use of pop culture references and moments can feel a little off but I guess they have to use some form to make a jab at themselves or other forms of entertainment and compared to some other reviews I have done with a similar critique, this one was less focused on the references overall.
Music: Lastly with this one, this comes to the likes of the appeal of the songs and some are more memorable then others to me and some I wish was in place over others like the mentioned Aqua version of Barbie Girl over the mumble rap version that sure have its fans but to me I prefer the original and a case that some remixes can work and some should be left as is but I know everyone has their own opinion of taste
SLB: no issues, just wanted to mention them again cause I care about them a lot and wanted to reference them twice and think she made some great points.
but that is all the critiques I have to say and compiled about this film and let us see how this turned out overall.
Life in Plastic is fantastic or is the doll faulty?
So overall in this form of a conclusion, after studio handover, thankful casting changes to avoid disaster and a once in a lifetime double feature event, the Barbie movie was something I was thinking I may get a bit of enjoyment out of and know in some form that it was not intended towards my perspective but I came out with the important person after and was very pleasantly surprised on how well made and entertaining I found this film and some of the deep meanings to the film I got from it and from the opinions of the special guest of this video and enjoyed to see that this doll really can be anything (and the case of seeing this having a big significance for a mass demographic for many years to come). Sure it has its minor issues here and there but I think from how it came together it worked out that way and think it deserved its success in helping save the summer box office and provide something new fresh and colourful and if the case a sequel comes along in the future, I would not mind checking it out as long as the people involved with this are back (side note: I do know and heard there is a supposed animated feature film coming out on Barbie from Illumination but does not have Greta or Margot involved and hopefully they get a good choice pick for it in director and star and not someone that could spell disaster) and the case that I could go to it with the one I see as the Barbie to me as their Ken.
