Weird Mind News Room Episode 100: Jan 20th - 26th
*big music for the big milestone*
Hello again to all of you wonderful people that have come across this series as we have reached the giant big milestone as we have the 100th edition of my weekly series of Weird Mind News Room as this week we will be talking on the content of media for this week from a few new releases, a trailer or 2 and some variety of News stories that we have so let not waste time on introductions and lets talk on all things media for this week.
New Releases of a variety choice
Movies
The Brutalist
The first of the 3 new releases for this week is seeing the ideals that the land of opportunity may be a mixed appeal of what it is all cracked up to be (which I feel with what has happened over the last few days over there is saying something) but we have a film set in the past that will give some sense of hope when things may seem bleak as we have the newest film of The Brutalist. The Film will tell the story of László Toth, a visionary architect who moves to America from Europe after the war to rebuild his life, his career and his marriage while struggling in this new location, until he settles in Pennsylvania, where a wealthy and prominent industrialist recognizes his talent. Reception to this film has been hit with universal acclaim with praise to the performances, story, themes and production of the film, with some critiques aimed at the 3.5 hour runtime and some controversy over the use of AI to fix some of the pronounciation of the accents and language of the characters in the film, though it has not stopped the film being labelled as one of the best films of 2024 and winning and nominated for multiple awards and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.
Flight Risk
The 2nd film for this week is seeing us flying high above the sky where things may seem like nothing could go wrong but there is a lot that could go wrong as we have the newest action film and the return of directing from actor Mel Gibson with his new film of Flight Risk. The film sees a U.S Marshal boarding a small plane to transfer a Government witness across the country to New York, but as they start to fly across the Alaskan Wilderness, tensions will soon start to rise as not everyone on the flight is who they appear to be. Reception to this new film has not been the most appealing to critics as while the concept and performances are decent, it feels very small scale or lacking in mass appeal then it should be from the director in focus and a bit of a let down but may appeal of a turn your brain off and enjoy popcorn flick, and if something like that entices you then you can check this new film out now in cinemas.
Presence
The last of the new releases for this week is taking the concept idea of where you may feel that you are home alone but feel like there is something there watching you that you can't seem to put a finger on it and this new title will be taking that concept to a whole new level as the studio of Neon has brought a new take on a Horror thriller with the film of Presence. The film will see the focus from the perspective of a poltergeist as we follow this entity as a new family moves into the new home it resides in and they start to expect that the are not alone and may soon start to wonder why the presence cannot leave. Reception on this new film has also seen some very strong reception with praise to the concept, approach to a new take on horror, performances and the sense of scares and tension present throughout and if you want to observe the concept through the eyes of a lost soul, then you can also catch this new film out now in cinemas.
Trailers to save humanity
Mickey 17
The first of the trailers for this week is seeing the idea that sometimes a job can be a bit tedious, monotonous or to some can feel a bit boring, but this new film takes that to a new level while also being a bit more deadly and life threatening as Parasite director Bong Joon Ho is bringing a new take of an adaptation to life as we have recieved a trailer for the new sci-fi of Mickey 17. The film follows the titular Mickey (Robert Pattinson), a man who signs up to be an expendable as he is sent on a man made suicide mission to colonize the ice world of Niflheim, where every time one of his iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. But when one of them survives with a new one generated, things will soon get a little out of hand for the company. So the likes of this film has been quite an interesting story of this development and following this for the last little while that the concept and footage for this film has appealed to me as something that is very interesting and very creative and is something I feel could be a big hit when it does release. Now the one thing I do hope is that the studio of Warner Bros have not interfered with the Oscar winning directors complete vision as the studio is known to do and tried to do with this film and hopefully will be an entertaining sci-fi adventure that is not too far away as the film will generate into cinemas in a little over a months time on March 7th.
Doom the Dark Ages
As for the other trailer for this week is seeing the case that the terrors of the underworld and the fear of total death and torment were not a present day thing and have been around for centuries and in all case it is up to one man to do a job he is made for: to rip and tear, as we have recieved an all new trailer for the upcoming new game of Doom the Dark Ages. Set as a prequel to the original 2016 title of the modern series, this new game will follow the Doom Slayer as he becomes the last hope for a kingdom being tormented against the demons and forces from Hell in a more medieval setting to boot. Now I think this series has definetly seen a mass appeal and come back after the series started strong, had a mixed appeal from the 3rd entry and then came back and has been on a winning streak for the last few years and this one looks to continue that with new elements including giant mechs and using creatures for aerial combat and I am so excited to try this out. And thankfully with this new trailer we have finally gotten a release date and will be able to destroy all the demons on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC from May 15th this year.
News of variety for celebrations
The announcements and big debates of the Oscar nominations
Well we start off this weeks news stories with it being that time of year again as after a brief delay to the announcements due to the ongoing wildfires in LA, we were finally given the nominations to this years Academy Awards on Thursday that has quite a few surprises, snubs and hotly debated nominations for some on different films being presented, but lets not waste time on these summaries and let me delve into some of the big nominees.
So we will start with the most nominated and this one like back at the Golden Globes has been the mostly hotly debated film to be nominated and that is with Emilia Perez leading with 13 Nominations including best picture and Best performances for both Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascón (which in fairness I will give some praise for as its the first openly Transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar) with the one that people thought would also get one was for Selena Gomez but was one of the snubs for this year (though she was nominated in the original song category that will not see any song performed this year). I haven't seen the film yet but I will get to my thoughts on it in due time. As for the other 2 films to round out the top 3 with both movies receiving 10 nominations a piece was this weeks new release of the Brutalist and the first part of Wicked, where my own issues stem from the Wicked one where sure some bits I can at least agree with for one or 2 performances and the production and technical stuff, but there is some case I am not seeing it as a big best picture contender but that may be me (probably delve more into it when I get to that films review). I will also want to bring up the appeal that animated films this year is a very strong contest and some have even escaped from being locked to that category as the 5 nominees for that category are Inside Out 2, Wallace and Gromit Vengeance Most Fowl, The Wild Robot, Flow and Memoir of a Snail which is a really good category and while 2 of them have not released yet, it is anyone's game to win that award. And as I mentioned some animated films did get a few nominees with Wild robot getting 3 for best sound and best Score and then Flow also receiving a 2nd nomination for best International feature which I am all for any animation winning in other categories and is the closest for the moment for best picture.
Now the likes of some snubs I have seen online, one film that has seen a fair bit of complaints of being snubbed was both of Luca Guadagino's films of Challengers and Queer with many feeling that Daniel Craig deserved a best actor nod and Zendaya for best Actress and Challengers for a best score and cinematography amongst others. Another one was with Dune 2 that while it did garner 5 nominations including best picture, many felt Denis Villenvue was snubbed for best director and the films score being unaccepted for a best score due to the tracks being too similar to the first film (which I can understand but I feel there is enough new stuff that was added to be allowed) and some saying Nosferatu deserves a best picture nod which I could agree on but overall some I would agree and some I feel could've been added. If I had a way to add 2 films in this award show that got a little overlooked or maybe not count for one of them is some for Furiosa (mainly in the production and technical awards like Fury Road got) and then the other is Paddington 3 for best Visuals (this one may be more for next year as the film is not out in the US until next month) but those would be some I would add in but overall a decent nominations made and I will be giving my predictions for the award night before the event takes place on March 2nd so stay tuned.
But what are your own thoughts on these nominations and what ones do you see deserve the win and what was snubbed and what would you add in to each category? Let me know your choices and picks down below and we can discuss on them there.
2 new cast members for 2 new big different Odyssey's
The next story for this week is bringing a focus to the usual array of some discussion about the content of some new casting announcements for the week which we have 2 projects seeing some big named stars joining 2 big name projects or franchises or the rumoured side for the moment but let us get into talking on what these projects are in particular.
And now from one form of an Odyssey to another as this one will be taking us into the far reaches of Space as we are talking about the ever growing saga of Star Wars. So we have been hearing a fair bit about projects being made in the realm of films for the saga for the last few years with the only one set in stone and has actually finished filming is the new Mandalorian film that is out next May, but we do know on some other ones in the works and one of them is being helmed by Free Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine director of Shawn Levy that will be taking his style approach to the Galaxy Far Gar Away and it may not be without figure to bring the force or the balance as there has been a rumblings that he may have found his leading man for this project and that comes in the form Ken himself of Ryan Gosling which I can see him do well with this project as he is shown that he can really provide a lot of entertainment and appeal (I mean Fall Guy was one of my Favourite movies of last year so I enjoy seeing him in a lot of stuff) and I am sure he will bring some charm and action to the series on Jedi's and Bounty Hunters and the fight of Good against evil and Will be an appeal. All I keep seeing in my head is a mix of his character from Blade Runner mixed with his character from Drive and will be an absolute mad man behind the controls of some large spacecraft. Now at the moment this is just a rumour and has not been fully finalized but if it does happen I will not say no to a Gosling Star Wars adventure but I guess we will watch this space to see what comes from this project.
But what are your own thoughts on these casting rumours and announcements, do you see Berenthal as a good choice for Nolan's epic and would you watch Gosling in space? Let me know what you think of them down below in the comments.
A directors of Monsters and a world of fast colourful creatures on the way
And the last of the stories for this week is with a mix of some new announcements of some projects and the concept of some release date confirmations for 2 of the projects that will be in discussion for this weeks story but let us delve into the ones we know and ones we will learn to know more of.
But with all of that I would like to know your own thoughts on these announcements, are you excited for a 4th Sonic movie and will you be checking out both of the new films from Robert Eggers? Let me know what you think of them all down below.
And with all of that, this now brings us to the end of the 100th episode of Weird Mind News Room and I do hope that you enjoyed this array of rambles from this week of content from me and thank all of those that have checked out my work over the last 100 blogs and here is to many more episodes. Let me know of what you think of everything down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday doing many great things and I will see you all in the next episode :)
