Weird Mind News Room episode 106: Mar 3rd - 9th

*music worth getting yourself cloned for*

Hello again to all of you wonderful people from across the vast information superhighway to the 106th edition of Weird Mind News Room where this week like always we will talk on the new releases of the week, a trailer or 2 and some news regarding some all areas of entertainment, so we are not wasting too many clones or time and we will get to talking about all things media for this week.

New Releases that are worth being cloned for

Movies
Mickey 17
So on the first of the new releases of this week is one of the highly anticipated films of 2025 getting a release is seeing that no matter the occupation, the task or the outcome that you have found yourself in, it often may come along to feel like a bore or end up getting you killed and this is how our main character finds himself of dying over and over again all for the purpose of mankind as Oscar Winning director of Bong Joon-Ho has finally brought his new sci-fi film to the big screen with the release of Mickey 17. The film will follow the titular character of Mickey Barnes, a man who signs himself up to be an "expendable" on man made expedition to the planet of Niflheim to make it a chance to find a way to colonize the new planet. He soon gets himself over his head as his job sees him dying to test and experiment for dangerous issues for this new planet and when one dies a new clone form of Mickey is produced with all of his emotions and memories repurposed into the new version, but soon things get a little messy when one of the clones that was presumed dead survives and has to deal with the politics of this expedition and with the new printed clone of himself in the process. Reception on this film has seen some very well recieved reception across the board with praise to the concept, the adapting of the source material of the original book and of the performances, especially to lead Robert Pattinson who brings a lot of weird and wonder to his multiple performances and if you are up for a sci-fi adventure that may be worth seeing more then once then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.

Plankton the Movie
Now we go from the big screen to the new streaming movie of this week as we are not going into the far reaches of space, but instead we are diving deep into the vast oceans and taking a visit to a town that is home to a very happy sponge, but instead of focusing on him, we are turning to the smaller, one eyed menace with an all new scheme for world domination, with mixed results as we have a new film focused on a spin off character with Plankton the movie. The film is a mixed of stories from Origins to multiple stories with the main focus of the narrative being the tangled love story with his sentient computer wife of Karen goes sideways that soon sees her take a stand and decides to take over and destroy the world without him and will soon see Plankton teaming up with Spongebob and some other members of Bikini Bottom to stop this domination and fix their marraige in the process. Reception for this film so far from the time the film leaked months ago and now with praise to the visuals, story, performances and humour and is a vast improvement over the last one from what I have heard. Its not the only SpongeBob film for this year but we can talk on that later when it does come out but if you want to check out this new undersea adventure, then you can check this new film out now on Netflix.

Marching Powder
The last of the films for this week is one that is more of a film that will appeal in the area of being a film to appeal to the working class, the one that can feel relatable in a way and coming from the comedy realms of the British scene as we have the new film known as Marching Powder. The film follows a simple British Geezer (Danny Dyer) who will battle to make a promise to save his marriage and avoid Jail after being ordered by a court to put his days of brawling and drug misuse behind him. Reception on this film has seen a bit of a mixed reception that while the concept and idea work well and performances feel relatable, it feels close to the usual affair and a story has been seen done before so many times, but if you want something to check out for a possible funny film then you can check this film out now in cinemas.

One of them Days
We have one more extra new film release for this week that will show that even when life is crazy and the outcome can seem mad, as long as you have someone by your side then it can all work out, as we have a leading lady centric film for this week with a new comedy film of One of them days. The plot follows two best friends (Keke Palmer and SZA) who must find a way to scramble together rent money after one of their boyfriends blows through it all and must avoid eviction and keep their friendship in tact in the process. Reception on this new film has garnered very strong praise for its performances, its comedy and also its relatability in its narrative and if you are up for a bit of a laugh then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas too.

TV Shows
Daredevil Born Again
On the one TV show for this week is one that has been long anticipated, one that brings us to the world of the MCU once again and the return of the deep criminal underworld as after the original series wrapped up over 5 years ago, the man without fear has finally returned with a continuing story as we finally have the release of the new series of Daredevil Born Again. The series will follow on from stories established from the original series and from Echo and other shows that will see Attorney Matt Murdock finding himself on a collision course with the Kingpin of Wilson Fisk when their past identities begin to start emerging. Reception for this new series so far like the previous 3 seasons of this show has been very well recieved with praise for the kept tone of the original series, the return of the performances, specifically of Carlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, and for the action and narrative that it is setting it out for the future of the MCU and if you are up for returning to Hell's Kitchen then you can catch the first 2 episodes now on Disney+ with a new episode releasing every Tuesday Night / Early Wednesday Morning.

Video Games
Fragpunk
On the video game scene for this week, the first of the 2 releases for this week is with a focus of going big, fast and action packed as we have another new entry in the ever growing array of the looter shooter or the 5v5 realm as things can go the way of the cards with the all new game of Fragpunk. The game will see you play one of many selection options of characters in a 5v5 hero shooter that will soon see you hone your skills with the focus of using shard cards allowing you to break the rules of combat and ensure that no two rounds will ever be the same. Reception on this title has been a little mixed with praise to the gameplay and execution, though some technical hiccups and the gatcha system with earning in game rewards and currency can be a bit of a nuisance and a drag but may amend itself overtime with more updates and concepts and if you are up for a new hero shooter to get a break from the Marvel hero shooter, you can play this new title now on PC with console versions initially planned for release this week but will release now later this year.

Split Fiction

The last of the releases for this week is seeing us tapping into the realm of fantasy and sci-fi colliding and seeing that this adventure is not going to be a one person job and will see you need a co-op companion to save the day as the studio behind the award winning games of A Way Out and It Takes Two bring us the most ambitious of titles as we have the all new game of Split Fiction. The game will follow authors Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster, writers of stories with one on fantasy and one on sci-fi who find themselves trapped in the world of their stories by a device called the machine from a massive company that uses them to steal creative ideas and they must work together to get through the worlds and save the day and escape with their lives changed as well. Reception on this new game has seen some great universal acclaim with praise to its concept, blending of genres, the main characters of controls and so much more and may be another hit for the studio and even one of the best games of the year and if you are up for an all new adventure of storytelling, then you can play this new game now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Trailers to resonate survival

The Last of Us Season 2?
Initially we were going to have a 2nd week with no trailers but thankfully one did come in at the end as I was writing this episode and the trailer is with a focus to another highly anticipated series and adaptation of a popular title that the first season was a critical and awards darling about to see a return with a bit of a time jump and see a shift in its tone and violence as when things look like they are lost in the darkness to always look for the light as we have gotten the final trailer for the 2nd season of The Last of Us. This new season will of course cover a portion of the highly praised but also hotly debated and controversial 2nd game that will see Joel and Ellie continue on a journey to survive in this post apocalyptical America but in the case where the 1st season and games theme was about love and hope, this new season will follow the reverse theme of Hate. So it was a case of feeling that no matter what they showed for this adaptation I was already excited for it and it is still a presence in this form that I am still overly excited for it and its a case I am all prepped to endure all the pain and sadness and all the different emotions again for this series (even ones I am dealing with now) and I for one think so far it looks amazing and exciting and intrigued to see people's response to this series for those that have no idea about this games story, but thankfully we do not have too long to wait as the new season will start streaming and releasing on Sky Atlantic / Now / HBO Max from April 13th / 14th.

News of life and culture

The big winners and the dramas of the Oscars 2025
SO we start off the news stories for this week is with a focus of a little update to a recent event and video and that is with the discussion of the recent Academy Awards or the Oscars and I will say that one thing I can appreciate was that this year there was a lot of well made and entertaining elements to it all and was bogged down by messy outcomes with a really well done ceremony, good comedy, respect to the films and people involved and Conan did a great job as well too.... though we did have 2 slight dramas to the whole event but we can discuss on them in a moment but lets give a quick summary of the big winners of the night.

So this year was not a massive one sided one for one film as a fair few movies all got some award recognition with the big winner of the night going to the film of Anora, winning 5 of its 6 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Mikey Madison and Best Director with the only award it didn't win was for supporting actor but that one was a surefire win for Kieran Culkin. As for the top 3 total films, The Brutalist came in 2nd wit 3 wins from 10 nominations with wins for best score, cinematography and Best Actor for Brody and his acceptance speech now holding the world record for the longest Oscar speech at nearly 7 minutes. Then rounding out 3rd was a 3 way tie with Wicked, Emilia Perez and Dune Part 2 all winning 2 awards each. While some films felt may have won a few more over others I think from the variety of wins for each category was a tough content and overall a well established choice of winners. As for my own predictions, while I got less then last year accurate where I was only one wrong last time, I was still near accurate with about 20 of 23 nominees correct with the wrong choices mainly going to the documentary or short film categories but they were a difficult one to decipher but I am sure there's always next year to get the accuracy right but we will see.

Now this is not the only bit of discussion as there was of course some points of discussion I want to bring up and it was mainly in the area of 2 issues. First was the whole Bond musical tribute that while I think it was a nice thing to honor the producers of the film who are now no longer producers of the series (which side note the reason why they are not was because Jeff Bezos was petty that some of his Bond Spin off ideas were rejected and he had a grudge against Barbara Broccoli) the choice of the performers and it not having much else to add to it was a bit of a weird choice as many thought this was building to a new Bond announcement of whos taking on the role of Bond 26 being announced but it was all for nothing, but I am sure we will get something about that franchise quite soon enough. The only one came from the reaction to the best Doc film winner of No Other Land that was about a group of Palestinians and Israeli's coming together in a symbolism of resistance and peace when the country is in a devastating conflict as it was seen by a wide number of audience not standing up or even applauding which showed the case for some either not getting the idea of what this film was about or showing their opinion of the conflict and it seemed really questionable about the whol ordeal going on, but since I am not one that wants to talk too much on drama or current day politics or drama, I will leave it at that. It wasn't the only shake up from it as it also saw the original presenter for this award of Gal Gadot (and probably also Rachel Ziegler) essentially change at the last minute due to Gadot's opinion on the conflict and her past as well but as I mentioned lets not worry too much on the drama. All I know is that I feel the film sends a good message and needs to be seen by some that may not fully understand and hopefully can find hope along the way. But besides the 2 discussions there, I think overall the award show was a lot more appealing and a success in the outcome and hopefully will improve with every year.

But overall I would like to know your opinions on this years Oscars and do you think that the awards were done well or what should've won in your opinion and is there any other moment that was not that overly appealing in this show? Let me know what you think down below in the comments.

Disney is making a mess of a decision, questionable shelving and a return for a rabbit
Now the next story for this week is with the focus of some discussions about some issues that have popped up in the area of one studio and that is with the giant house of mouse itself of Disney. Now it has been a while since we gave a focus of this studio but for this week it is in the sense of some not so great news or some confusing elements but there is one part of it that does sound hopeful but we will delve into that and my quick thoughts now.

SO the first of these pieces that was announced this week and one that has seen a hope and was also highly anticipated and that was the announcement of a follow up series to the 2009 / 2010 film of The Princess and the Frog and many were excited for it but it seems that those dreams are about to be dashed as it was announced that the series has been shelved with no reason as to the decision on why (for a few hours that is). This whole shelving is a real shame as I was looking forward to some new 2d animated content from Disney as it has been over a decade since the last 2d animated film and hoping for more of stuff like that would've appealed to me a whole lot more (and how much of a coincidence that the animated series focused on the first Black Disney Princess was the one to be shelved or cancelled before release) with the only remnants left is being now worked into a special for this series but I feel the best approach to let it be something to be fully seen is rework it to a film like they did with the Moana series last year but I guess we will not know for the time being but I do hope that maybe a slim chance we will see it get a release in thee future.

The 2nd part of this story relates to the shelving of the first part and that is to do with the focus of a discussion about a decision being made from the studio as they announced at the same time of the Tiana series being shelved that the Disney Animation department is no longer planning to release long form entertainment on their streaming service of Disney+ which would be long form episode series like the aformentioned Tiana series or the currently airing Pixar series of Win or Lose and focus more on their theatrical releases or films for the service. There is an unknown exception which may be fine with shows that are just short 10 min episodes like the Olaf explains shorts or Zootopia+ series. Now I do see this as being a dumb idea approach to this as its a case that if Disney want to control the entire market from the big to the small screen then having the idea of longer formatted episode content makes a whole lot more sense then just dropping it all together cause I see if they don't then what's the point of them really owning a streaming service if they won't make episodic content and just rely on other subsidiaries they own to make content. Hopefully there will be a case that they do return to this form or retract this approach cause it just seems like a dumb concept but I guess we will have to see in due time if they do or not.

However it is not all bad news for this studio as we do have the announcement of a new project for a character that has been around now for 100 years and was even here before the studios iconic mouse himself as it was announced this week that Mandalorian creator and Iron Man director of Jon Faverau is making a new Live Action / Animated hybrid series on the character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This one does really appeal to me as it's been a long time since Oswald headlined a main series or project of his own as the last appearance was back in the 1960s in some comic book stylings before the name of the character have negative connotations due to a certain day in 1963, but his last appearance in any cartoon was much earlier then that in the early 50s with a cameo in a Woody Woodpecker cartoon. After being dormant for about 50 years, he was then brought back up when a game was pitched to Bob Iger who then got the rights to the character in 2006 and then he would make his grand return 4 years later in the 2010 title of Epic Mickey and has since appeared in cameos in some other shorts and at the theme parks as well as being a playable character in co-op in the Epic Mickey sequel, so the likes of giving Oswald a proper focused project of his own seems like a no brainer and I for one look forward to see this come to fruition in due time and hopefully will bring more attention and love to the original Disney character.

But with all of that I would like to know your own opinions about this Disney news and do you think their decisions are a good or bad thing and if you are excited for a series based on the Lucky Rabbit? Let me know what you think down below and we can discuss them there.

Castings for epics, wizards and seasonal witches
The 3rd story for this week is of course the usual affair of some casting news with all of these being projects I have mentioned in recent weeks with a confirmation of another cast to a growing massive ensemble, a confirmed and rumoured casting for a series I see as unnecessary and a rumoured one that is a weird choice but is not finalized yet but lets get to talking on what those castings are and give some thoughts on them.

The first of these casting discussions is one again bringing us over to talk about the ever growing cast of the Nolan epic of the Odyssey, as we have a new cast member joining from another acclaimed historical epic as Shogun star Cosmo Jarvis has joined the cast for this film to be starring alongside the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and many more additions to the cast and I think that its another top choice in a film that gets more and more great and interesting new cast members becoming part of something great that has already started filming in Morroco. Now again like most of the cast, we do not have any idea as to who he will be playing in this film and if he is one of the gods from the tales or one of the advisors or soldiers but I guess as the film continues production and gets closer to release we will get an idea as to who everyone in this cast will be portraying as well as seeing if there is any more additions to this films ever growing roster but we shall see in due time.

So we go from Nolan's Odyssey to the new take of HBO's adaptation of the still opinionated unnecessary Harry Potter tv series as there has been a bit of an update of a possible confirmation that has brought a lot of controversies for one casting and the other is one that has come up as a rumoured finalized version. The first was that after being rumoured a few weeks ago it was seemingly confirmed this week that Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Snape for the series and this is the one that has brought a fair amount of concerns as the case they casted someone that in the books is labelled as being unappealing and ugly when the man cast is clearly handsome, there would be a lot of focus on race issues if the likes of the character when he was a student at Hogwarts was bullied by James Potter in the 70s or whenever the series will be set in time and then the case that the character of Snape is essentially
a member of the equivalency of wizard Nazi's..... so unless it is majorly changed or given a lot of prosthetics, it still will have some form of drama to these projects but its a case to still give a chance for now but it is unknown on the outcome for the moment. As for the other casting, while not fully finalized, it seems to be reported they are eyeing Ozark actress Janet McTeer as the headmistress of McGonagall, previous played by the late Maggie Smith and I think that one is not a bad choice as I have heard a lot of good from her performance from that show so I can give that one a chance as I will for the others. Again as I always say with this series of wondering if it is really necessary but its probably just Warner wanting more and more money but I guess we can see if this will work out by the time the show comes out presumably next year.

So the last of the discussions for this week in the likes of casting news is taking us to another adaptation and this is with the focus of the planned Narnia adaptations from Barbie and Lady Bird Director of Greta Gerwig as while we have not heard much on who is being cast in this film yet besides a rumoured casting of Saoirse Ronan, there is another name that has appeared to have been approached to appear and that is with the British musician of Charli XCX. Now it is unclear as to who she would play if cast but the one rumoured role that was being pushed in conversation the last few days was her portraying the Ice Queen that was played by Tilda Swinton in the original Disney adaptation 20 years ago. Now while it is an odd choice, it could work out but it is hard to tell right now as to how this will all come about in due time, but I am sure that we will learn about all the castings in due time for this project before its release next Christmas.

But what are your thoughts on these casting confirmations and rumoured ones, who are you most excited for and who would you cast in these projects if you had the chance to do so? Let me know your choices down below

The days of Golfers and Monsters
The last of the stories for this week is with a focus to the narrative of getting some release date announcements and this one is not going to be too overly long and both have their fans and excitement for them but lets delve into talking on what exactly those films are shall we.

So the first of the release date announcements has given us the go ahead and the time and place to book a slot to hit the fairways as earlier this week Netflix announced the release date for the upcoming sequel of Happy Gilmore which has been confirmed to be releasing now on the 25th of July on the streamer, which will have it releasing on the same weekend as Marvel's First family and I hope that their is a case that we will see this project get a bit of a theatrical release like some of the other films that could appeal for the big screen like Beverly Hills cop 4 or the 2 Knives Out Sequel should've or should get but I am sure we may hear some word about that down the line when we get a proper trailer for this film at some point soon and we can return back to out happy place as well too.

And for the 2nd release date confirmation was the announcement of a project from a from ago that was in the works is that we have been given a release date for the new film adaptation of the Resident evil series from the Barbarian and Companion director with the confirmation on the film releasing on September 18th 2026. Now at the moment it is unclear if the film will be a new take on one of the original games stories, a new story with the familiar character or an entirely new story and characters similar to the series of films starring Mila Jocovich, but I am sure that we will learn more about this project over this next year as casting and production get underway and I feel that with good faith and focus we will see this come about and may even be the best take adaptation of this series in film form but I guess we will find out in due time for that.

But what do you think of these 2 new release date announcement and are you excited for either of these 2 upcoming projects in particular. Let me know what you think down below.

And with all of that, this brings us to the end of the 106th edition of Weird Mind News Room and I do hope that you enjoyed listening to my rambles for another week as always. Let me know your thoughts and opinions about all of this down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday doing many great things and I shall see you all in the next episode :)

Take care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
