Weird Mind News Room Episode 6: April 3rd- 9th 2023
*Insert over dramatic News room music*
The other big film release of this week come to us from Award winning director and actor Ben Affleck, with a new true story about the creation of one of the world famous brand of shoes that saw the company of NIKE and Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) pursue the rookie but soon to be superstar of Michael Jordan to form a partnership that will revolutionize the world of sports and contemporary culture. From very strong positive reviews, strong cast performances and a decent starting earning at the box office, Air may have itself a success story and could be one that may be seen by awards season discussions (but it is too early to tell)
One thing that I was surprised to see get anything in the present time after the cult hit original and the not great sequel a few years after the original was a series based on the world of Grease. In this new streaming release musical series, it is set 4 years before the events of the original movie, that sees four different outcasts deciding to band together and dare to have fun on their own terms, which will in turn cause quite a moral panic in Rydall park forever. From some of the mixed but seems to be Ok reviews, it probably won't be the most inoffensive of shows (that has already been set early this year with a really bad show) and I may give a look into at some point in the future.
In a follow up to a previous story from last weeks weird mind news, we had a rumoured release date for one of the new MCU Disney+ shows of Secret Invasion and late Sunday night Early Monday Morning here we got a new Trailer for the new series of Secret invasion and confirming the release date of June 21st. The series is more of a spy thriller vibe that see's Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and his allies including Maria hill (Cobie Smolders) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to stop a secret Skrull invasion on Earth. I am intrigued by this series and its spy vibe and will check it out when it releases in June.
We now have our first look at the 3rd film to be released by DCU this year and the introduction of the newest member to the universe in the form of Blue Beetle. In this film, Jamie Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) suddenly find himself in possession of an ancient technology of the Scarab, that chooses Jamie to be the symbiotic host, giving his a new powerful suit of armour that gives him incredibly extraordinary and unpredictable powers. While I do not know much about the character of Blue Beetle and have read some comics with him in it in some amount, I do not know much about him but I will give it a good look into before its release in August, but it looks interesting and comic booky and will give a look when it does release then.
Another one of my most highly anticipated movies from this year for sure is the sequel to the award winning 2018 animation powerhouse of Into the Spider-verse with its follow-up that sees Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) becoming the new Spider-Man for his universe has reunited with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) from the other universe, and soon ends up being catapulted through the multiverse, where he encounters a multitude of Spider-people in charge of protecting its very existence formed by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). But when they clash on how to take care of a new dangerous threat of The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so that he can save the people he loves most. With plans of 6 different animations in this film and it already being visually stunning and how fantastic the last one was, hopefully this film will be another critical hit and actually make more of a big swing at the box office.
Back in 2020, the directors of the previous 2 Avengers movies, the Russo Brothers created a new action film starring The god of thunder himself, Chris Hemsworth, as mercenary Tyler Rake, who was tasked with rescuing a kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. Now the sequel follows up on discovering that Tyler had not actually been killed at the end of the previous film and is back again for a new high stakes mission. I am not sure what the full story is but I am sure that I will learn by the time the film releases in June.
The Muppets as of late have seen a bit of a magicians act where one minute they are there the next minute they are gone, but now we have a new series based on the Muppet band of DR. Teeth and the electric mayhem who are trying to record their first platinum album in the modern day music business with the help of the Junior A&R executive Nora. I a sure that Hijinks will ensue once the series releases in May.
It will soon be time to become a Barbie girl in a Barbie world as Greta Gerwig brings the long running very popular doll into a whole new live action take that is very pink, super sunny and full of Barbies with different personalities and Ken, who's...... Just Ken. This new story focuses on Barbie (Margot Robbie) who after having a form of a mental crisis is expelled from Barbieland for being a less then perfect doll, and travels to the real world with Ken (Ryan Gosling) tagging along on the journey to help find true happiness. It has an interesting idea to it and hopefully it works out well for them after taking nearly 15 years to make it and that it does well in competition with Nolan's Oppenheimer come July.
Releasing on the same date as their Mario Movie, Illumination released a first look at their next animated film releasing at Christmas that sees a family of ducks of trying to persuade their very overprotective father by going on a vacation of a lifetime to a spot that is not too hot and not too cold so they don't have to migrate every winter. While it is not much shown from the trailer released, the animation does look very nice and pleasing to look at overall but I am sure more will be revealed overtime.
Clone High
After 2 decades since the original series ended, the series of Clone High is back again with an all new sequel series after the finale of the previous series of the characters unfrozen and up to more Hijinks in the modern day setting with clones of JFK, Cleopatra and many others and I am sure they will make it as great as the original with the showrunner from the first series back again.
Harrison ford is back in the Fedora and Brown Leather Jacket and equipped with the classic whip for one last adventure in the dial of destiny. In this new tale, it is in the backdrop of the space race of 1969 and Indy is uneasy of Nasa hiring former Nazi's in the competition with the soviet union. He is joined on a journey with his God daughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller Bridge) to obtain a certain object from the past and stop Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) who wants to use the infiltration of the US to make the world as he sees fit. With this being the final film in the franchise and being directed by Logan Director of James Mangold as well as being developed with Spielberg, I am sure that it will be a great film and have his character happily and peacefully riding off into the Sunset.
In the last of the busy week of trailers, we have the first official trailer for the upcoming live action trailer for the next Star Wars series focused on Ashoka Tano. Going from their live action debut in season 2 of Mandalorian it will follow her journey across the galaxy to stop Admiral Thwarn with some help of characters from the animated Rebels series. It looks interesting and I will give it a watch when it releases sometime in August
Hello and welcome to the next installment of Weird Mind News Room, with your hot that seems to not know how long is too long, Me. For those that have just tuned into the series for the first time, this is the weekly series where I take you through some of the new releases, trailers and some of the media news that has happened over the past week. So let's not waste time and get into the news as we have a lot to discuss this week as a lot happened this week.
What's Newly released to the Masses
Movies
The Super Mario Bros Movie
In the first of the biggest animated movies of this year, the first of the late spring early summer releases and personal top 5 anticipated films of the year for me (and there is a lot I am excited for) we have Illumination's take on the popular video game Italian Plumber Mario. In this new film we see Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) get transported from the real world into the land of the Mushroom kingdom. After being separated in the process, Mario teams up with the kingdom's Princess Peach (Anya Taylor Joy) and an adventurous mushroom Toad (Keegan Michael Key) to recruit help and save Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom from the evil Bowser (Jack Black). The promotion and anticipation has been high with every new trailer and poster or screenshot of the film released and I am sure at the time of release will do (and has done so far) exceptionally well. From a little summary of what I though of the film, I really enjoyed it, and question some of the poor reviews for this movie (including one that called it dark and somewhat offensive and I question where they got that from) but I know it is best to go off my own opinions as other should go off their own (if you like to hear more about this film, I am currently working away on a little review that will be out hopefully in a few days) but this is one I will definitely watch again.
AIR
The other big film release of this week come to us from Award winning director and actor Ben Affleck, with a new true story about the creation of one of the world famous brand of shoes that saw the company of NIKE and Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) pursue the rookie but soon to be superstar of Michael Jordan to form a partnership that will revolutionize the world of sports and contemporary culture. From very strong positive reviews, strong cast performances and a decent starting earning at the box office, Air may have itself a success story and could be one that may be seen by awards season discussions (but it is too early to tell)
TV Shows
Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 6
We are now into the final weeks of the quite underwhelming season of the popular Mandalorian show (I have enjoyed a fair bit but it just feels a little unfocused when it comes to the overarching story for the season and mostly of weekly episodic adventures) and this week we are getting the 4th Mandalorian episode that is directed by Bryce Dallas Howard (and one to say personally that I think she should have the chance to direct her own Star wars movie or show creator of a series as most times her episode from the previous 2 seasons and Book of Boba Fett have been very popular) and will see the continue on from the task Bo-Katan, Mando and Grogu have received from the Armorer to go and find any scattered Mandalorian across the cosmos and bring them together to help build back and reclaim Mandalore. I do hope that the end of the season does pick up or is at least all fixed and better structured for the next season.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies
One thing that I was surprised to see get anything in the present time after the cult hit original and the not great sequel a few years after the original was a series based on the world of Grease. In this new streaming release musical series, it is set 4 years before the events of the original movie, that sees four different outcasts deciding to band together and dare to have fun on their own terms, which will in turn cause quite a moral panic in Rydall park forever. From some of the mixed but seems to be Ok reviews, it probably won't be the most inoffensive of shows (that has already been set early this year with a really bad show) and I may give a look into at some point in the future.
Video Games
Meet your Maker
Now for this weeks new game release we have Meet your maker, a game that is described as Mario Maker mixed with the visuals and gun gameplay of Doom. In the game you are tasked with building and raiding User generated outposts that would be full of traps and enemies to defeat and use it to upgrade your own outposts to challenge others to the deadly challenge. From some strong reviews from the outset, it may be a fun and creative way to get the creative mind flowing and also maybe show how psychotic you may be when it comes to making madcap traps for opponents to challenge themselves in.
Roll the footage to the trailers of the week
Secret Invasion
In a follow up to a previous story from last weeks weird mind news, we had a rumoured release date for one of the new MCU Disney+ shows of Secret Invasion and late Sunday night Early Monday Morning here we got a new Trailer for the new series of Secret invasion and confirming the release date of June 21st. Extraction 2

Now the sequel follows up on discovering that Tyler had not actually been killed at the end of the previous film and is back again for a new high stakes mission. Migration
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny
In other news
Let's go to Peru with everyone's favourite Bear
On the first of our stories for the week, we are taking a trip about to see everyone's lovable Marmalade loving bear Paddington. A little while after the release of the acclaimed Paddington 2, it was announced that a 3rd movie was being made with an unknown release date and the director of the first 2 was not directing this one as he was busy making the new Wonka movie with Timothee Chamalet. It was uncertain if this was continuing until just early this week where it was announced that the production of the 3rd film titled Paddington In Peru, will start production in the summer of this year. Now while no release date has been confirmed I will expect that the film will possibly have a 2024 release of a summer or Christmas release period. But I know I am excited for a wholesome continuation of that bear from darkest Peru.
What can I say except... Who asked for this?
Now for something I didn't expect to be announced this early, but we are now for another new announcement for the next film of the Live action retellings by Disney for all the monies is, surprisingly Moana. The reason that it is odd is due to the fact that most live action remakes are films from Disney that are over 20 years old, yet this film is less then 10 years old as it came out back in 2016 and planned for a projected release by 2026, I believe. There is a part of me that this was all planned by Dwayne Johnson to help get the revenue back from the poor box office and reception for Black Adam (and what may have also done to the 2nd Shazam film) as he is also a producer on this and may star again as Maui with Auli'i Cravalho also producing and may possibly be returning for the film as the titular lead. I am at a mixed form when it comes to these live action films and if they can pull it off with the visual flair the original had then it could be good but right now this feels unnecessary.
Harry Potter and the Unnecessary reboot
On the other end of the studio lot we have the company of Warner Bros with some rumoured news that that they are in near final agreements to reboot the series of Harry Potter where instead of a film series like the books were adapted into, they are now planning for a series for HBO with each season being one book in the franchise. This is another example of being really unnecessary as the films are great adaptations as it is and it does not need to be adapted again and rebooted when the series had finished slightly over 10 years ago. Sure some of them could be fully adapted with a show but right now it is unneeded and could've easily just leave the series be (as Rowling does not need any more money) or just do an adaptation of Cursed Child to fully complete the saga (while fixing it a bit as the play is seen as a bit mixed).
Turn on the Awesome Mix
As we entered into this week we are exactly one month away until the release of the final film in the guardians Trilogy. Besides the availability of purchasing tickets, Director James Gunn has announced the track listing for the highly popular soundtracks to these films (as well as 2021's Suicide Squad). It has some tracks from musicians like Beastie boys, Earth, Wind and Fire, Radio Head, X and many more. While they are all great tracks, it will be great to see how it is implemented into the scenes of the film.
Step, Turn, Step, turn and shoot
Right now we have just saw the recent release of the 4th chapter in the John Wick franchise and while we have the continuing series, we also have some new content being made based on that franchise. While we have a new mini series on the Continental coming out in September, we have one other film that is currently filming and planned with a new release date and that is Ballerina. If you had seen Parabellum, you may remember a scene where Wick heads to a theatre of performing Ballerinas to help gain passage out of the city as everyone is out for his death. This is what is the location and organisation being a focus on and will be set in between Chapter 3 and 4 of John Wick and stars academy award nominated actress Ana De Armas. This film has received a release date of June 2nd 2024, so we have a lot more of this world to explore in the coming months.
Small Man, big movie
Ridley Scott is a man of many talents and engaging films when it comes to his visions (I know as I was actually an extra in one of his most recent films from 2 years ago "The Last Duel") and now he is back to doing another adaptation of a famous figure in history and that is with the release of Napoleon, with Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix playing the titular role. The film had been worked on for around the last 2 years and it is now provided with a release date and it is not too far away. The film has been projected to open in late November on the same weekend of Thanksgiving in the US. We have yet to see anything on this film besides a first look photo of Phoenix in uniform but I am sure we will get something in the next short period of time.
Making a splash a slightly bit earlier
With all of these new superhero movies and shows coming out every year, you may forget some of these films are out amongst them and one of them that you may forget is out this year is Aquaman 2. It was recently announced that this film is getting a slightly earlier release date this year by one week earlier from December 25th to December 20th 2023. It will be seen if this does well from hearing of really poor test screenings and if a certain actress is still present in the film but we will know when the film is closer to making a splash into the movies at Christmas.
A not too long time ago, in a galaxy very, very close
Over the weekend in London, Lucasfilm held a large celebration of Star Wars and with this big event caused an array of trailers and announcements. While you have seen the new trailers above of the new Ashoka series and Indiana Jones film, we also have some new announcements that I am going to go through quickly on:
-Ashoka is coming in August of this year
-Bad batch will have a 3rd and final season in 2024
-Star Wars Visions season 2 and Young Jedi adventures will both be launching on May 4th
-Rian Johnston star wars trilogy is still in development but is a long way from being released or made
-Dial of Destiny director James Mangold will make a film set centuries before the skywalker saga that will focus on the origins of the Jedi and the first wielders of the force.
-Daisy Ridley is returning to the world of Star Wars in a new films set 15 years after the ending of Rise of Skywalker where she will become a Jedi Master and bring a new age of Jedi to the galaxy
-Dave Filoni, creator of the Clone Wars, will make a film set 5 years after Return of the Jedi and before the Force Awakens and will be the interconnected full circle end to the shows of Mandalorian, Ashoka, Book of Boba Fett and all those set in the new republic area.
-Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian series is still in development but is unsure of when it will be released.
With all of this new content announced and coming out, we will be exploring a lot more of the galaxy far far away in the near future.
Minecraft building away to a release date
In a story that only appeared to me in a surprise reveal, we have received a brand new release date for the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game of Minecraft. Starring Jason Mamoa, the film has now been given a release date of April 4th 2025. While it does sound interesting, the one thing that feels off is that it is a live action adaptation of the game but I am sure they may make it make sense by its release in 2 years time.
Are you ready.... For Freddy?
In the final story of the week, in a sudden out of nowhere announcement, Jason Blum and Blumhouse late on Wednesday Morning, announced that the Five Nights at Freddy's Movie adaptation now has a release date. The film will release in cinemas and simultaneously on Peacock on October 27th 2023, just in time for a Halloween release. We also were provided with the first look image of the pizzeria as well as a look at the Freddy Fazbear animatronic created by the Jim Henson studio. All that is left to ask is... Are you ready for Freddy?
And that is all that we have in terms of discussing for this week with media news, tune in next week and we can catch up with what is new for the following week (may even come across a new review or opinion article will be out as well too), but until then, continue to be wonderful people as always and Good night and good news.
Signing off
Sam H
