Weird Mind News Room Episode 72: July 8th - 14th
*music to appeal to an army of small pill shaped species.*
Hello again to all of the wonderful people who have come across my channel of blogs as we have the 72nd edition of my weekly Weird Mind News Room series where I shall be giving all of the rundown of the new releases of the week, some of the trailers and a few pieces of news to come out of the week so lets not waste time and lets talk on all things of media from the week.
Send in the new releases
Movies
Despicable me 4
Minions assemble, as for the big release of the week is with the franchise that started off as a unique aspect idea back 14 years ago in 2010 has grown into a massive 6 film franchise with 4 mainline and 2 spin offs (for the moment) on the small yellow fellows as we return for the newest edition with Despicable Me 4. The plot this time around will see Gru and his family including the new addition of Gru Jr, will have to go into hiding after a criminal mastermind and old nemesis of Maxime Le Mal is out for revenge and is coming after the dastardly former villain as well as some other elements and stories mixed in there. Reception for this film has been mixed with praise on the animation, cinematography and some of the cast performances, but has been criticised for feeling like multiple films in one, none connecting to each other and a very weak villain. Now I have seen the film myself and I will agree that the film is not that great and I will give a review for it real soon of my issues but I am sure it will appeal to some kids or families (but eve to say they deserve a little better) and if you want to check it out for yourself you can catch the film now in cinemas.
Long Legs
On the first of 2 horrors for the week is the film that has taken the internet by storm by being a film project that has been so cryptic with its marketing that it is genius as we have the newest horror of Longlegs. The film follows FBI agent Lee Harker as she is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn, revealing evidence of the occult and discovering a secret that connects her to the killer and must do what she can to stop them before he strikes again. Reception for this film has been very well praised for its concept and execution, tension, scares and performances particularly those of Maika Monroe and Nic Cage and if you want to learn the secret of genius marketing can do you can check out this film now in cinemas.
Fly Me to the Moon
Now for a new rom-com based story set to the tone of one of the most iconic moment of recent history (and one of the most discussed conspiracies too) as we have the new space based Rom-Com of Fly me to the Moon. This film will see sparks fly between a marketing executive and and a NASA official as he makes preparations for the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and having the element of a backup plan if things go a bit wrong. Reception has been modestly recieved with praised for the humour and setting and the performances of the main leads of Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum even amongst the messy plot elements but if you are wanting a romance that reaches the stars (I don't need one when there is one that is the beauty of the galaxy) then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.
In a Violent Nature
The last of the films for this week is the 2nd of the horror films for the week and is giving us a new look at the likes of the Slasher genre by seeing it through the Eyes of a Killer as we have the new horror slasher of In a Violent Nature. This film follows a resurrected corpse of a man named Johnny who is out for revenge against a group of teens who steal a locket that kept the soul of this vengeful spirit from a crime that happened 60 years ago and will hunt them down in a bloody rampage to get it back and return to his eternal slumber. Reception for the film has been well recieved with the unique concept and approach for a horror being well liked and also for some of the deaths and executions (I mean I have heard of a piece of audio going around for this film that a death was so graphic it caused someone in the screening to puke it was that grotesque) and if you want to go on a murderous walk in the woods then you catch this new film out now in cinemas.TV Shows
Sausage Party: Foodtopia
The last of the new releases is with a new animated series that is spawned from being a new sequel take on a Adult based film from a decade ago that shows that the things we eat have learned the truth and are now fucked up and our out for revenge as they have released the all new sequel series with Sausage Party: Foodtopia. This will follow on from the original movie where food has fought back against the humans and are now made the world safe for food to live in harmony. But soon when unknown elements like Rain, tensions amongst the food and societal disbelief starts to kick in, it will soon see Frank, Barry, Brenda and Sammy Bagel must restore balance and ake the world a better place for all food kind and it may even take a dumb human to help them. Reception for this series has seen a bit more of a mixed response that will see praise on the voice work and some elements of humour but is a far cry of the sharp wit and humour of the original raunchy animated film that feels a lot more overbaked and messy in the outcome but if you want to check out this 8 course meal then you can catch the full season now on Amazon Prime.
Trailers for the dastardly plan
F1 (Film)
We start the trailers for the week with one that popped up at the very end of last week that came out after I had recorded it so I could not add it into that one but it looks like the director of the really great Top Gun Maverick is feeling the need for speed once again as we are not taking to the skies but rather tearing up the asphalt as they have unveiled the first look at the upcoming film adaptation of F1. This film will be following Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) who had a terrible crash back in the 1990s and forced to retire from F1 and race in other disciplines. He soon comes out of retirement when an old friend (Javier Bardem) asks him to mentor a rookie prodigy Joshua Pierce on the major team of AXPGP. Now I think the likes of focusing on the high octane levels of racing and Adrenaline from the skies above of fighter jets to the high speed of F1 Racing seems really intriguing and what they have shown looks like they are going for that feel and it looks interesting and will be worth a checking out when the film releases into cinemas on June 25th next year.
Agatha All Along
Who has been messing up everything, well besides the likes of some Quantity over Quality standpoints and to some online saying it is the "Woke" morals of the company , bu twe are not looking at that (and the latter is overblown and makes no sense) as we are talking about someone with a bit of a wicked side that comes from another series with a popular character back to cause chaos as we have recieved the first trailer for the new series of Agatha all Along. The series will follow on from Wandavision with Agatha escaping her prison she was encased in by Wanda by the help of a mysterious goth teen who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Witches road and soon without her powers, Agatha will form a new coven with the teen and some others in order to face the trials themselves. Now I really enjoyed her character in the original miniseries and in all honestly I like the approach of this going in the realm of the supernatural horror aesthetic and I hope they go all in and have the most visually terrifying aesthetics (and maybe this also introduces the MCU version of the Devil somewhere but we will have to see) but we will find out when the series premieres on Disney+ in about 2 months time on September 18th.
Gladiator 2
Are you not entertained so far, well hopefully this next film will provide just that as after a bit of waiting and anticipation they have finally unveiled this week a first trailer for the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott epic of Gladiator 2. This story will be set 2 decades after the original and follow Lucius, the former heir to the Roman Empire, who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded by the Roman Empire led by general Marcus Acacius and will resolve to fight against the opposing rule of the young emperors of Caracalla and Geta. This project seems like it is building on something epic and so far from the footage it looks like they are heading for that big huge flair and spectacle and it looks interesting. Hopefully this film will be a return to form for the director and give him some more cash and revenue that some of his previous films should've gotten and we will see how it turns out when the film releases on November 15th.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks film
Are you ready kids for another undersea adventure with everyone's favorite absorbent sea creature as we are heading to the lone star state on a surface level adventure with the new film of Saving Bikini Bottom: the Sandy Cheeks movie. The film will see the entirety of Bikini Bottom being scooped out of the ocean depths and will see Sandy and Spongebob journey to Sandy's home state of Texas, where they meet her family and team up to save the town from an evil CEO. Now the odd choice on this is that they decided to wait a little while longer to unveil and release this given that the entire film was leaked onto Twitter all the way back in January (not sure if it is still on there but who knows with the mess of a social site) and it does not look bad, hopefully will be a bit more unique of a story then Sponge on the Run but I am sure we can find out when it releases in just under a months time on August 2nd.
Captain America: Brave New World
And the final trailer for this week was one that I was not expecting to see release this early (maybe another 2 weeks time or more in the fall) but it looks like we are prepping to suit up and take to the skies as we are seeing the new form of the Star Spangled Man with a Plan as we have recieved the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. This new film will see the new captain America of Sam Wilson at the center of an international incident and must work with the newly elected president of Thunderbolt Ross to stop the true brains behind the whole ordeal and prevent catastrophe . SO I was wondering if one of these projects for next year was being delayed as it seemed this or Blade may get it for reasons of messy development or a few reshoots but from this teaser it does look really interesting and seems to be finally answering the big "ancient celestial being shaped" elephant in the room and going for a more political thriller akin to the Winter Soldier aesthetic and I think it looks exciting (the only issue I have a little with the trailer is it feels like the editing was very choppy and nearly causing a bit of an epileptic seizure) but I am sure I will give this a look into when it releases in cinemas on February 14th 2025.
News for saving the date
There will be zero dawn for the time being
The first story for this week is delving into some news based on the aspect of the ever growing form of Adaptations of Video Games and we have a little bit of news on the likes of one adaptation that has been in the works for a while but went silent for a bit of time and we have a bit of a sad update (to some possibly). Now as you have seen, Sony or PlayStation has started to evolve more of their adaptations based on their projects with the likes of the Original Ratchet and Clank film from a few years ago, A sly Cooper film that I think is just dead at this point, A Twisted Metal series that only came out a few weeks ago that I heard was good and need to check out, a Gran Turismo film that was surprisingly decent and of course their big success story of an adaptation with The Last Of Us with a 2nd season currently in development, but there has been the discussion of 2 more adaptations that were known about which is the God of War adaptation going to Amazon Prime and the focus of this story of an adaptation of the Horizon series with Netflix, however that may be changing as according to sources, it seems the Horizon series adaptation has now been shelved at the moment at Netflix. The reason for this from what I have gathered is connected to some allegations I meant to bring up last week that involved the showrunner of the series and the current original showrunner for The Umbrella Academy of Steve Blackman for fostering a hostile environment on the latter show which is entering its final season next month and he was fronted as the showrunner of this new adaptation but it seems like because of these allegations they are worried of letting this happen. Do I see the likes of this series coming back, maybe, it could be with another showrunner or else it could go to another Streamer or channel down the line but it is hard to say and it really is rough for this series as it gets overlooked or complained about for the main leads look but I think a full series adaptation for this would be really cool and I hope we can see a return to that world in the future.
But what are your own thoughts on this whole shelving, do you see the likes of this series making a comeback and who would you cast in the main lead (in my head I keep picturing Ygritte from Game of Thrones) and also what are your thoughts on those showrunner allegations and do you see them as having fact and weight behind them or just total nonsense? Let me know what your thoughts are on all of this down below.
Spooky True Stories, Yellow Minions, Science anime's and Fashion getting new dates
The 2nd story for the week is with a little bit of an update to some announced release dates for the likes of some projects and films that have dropped this week and we are delving into the mixed variety of genres for these new release dates and lets me run through what was unveiled.
And just when you thought the new release was the only time I was talking about some specific characters, well you would be mistaken as coming out less then a week after the US release of Despicable Me 4 (and a day before it released here), the studio of Illumination has announced that we are getting a 3rd spin off for the Minions that will be releasing now on June 30th 2027. So I am unsure of how they will evolve this film series and if this film will also decide to get confused on the basis of the timeline and age of Gru in this one (as Minions 1 and 2 did that and also DM4 mentioned it as well in the new film) and if he is in this (which in most case is likely) then will be optimistic but skeptical of what else they can do with this series in general (maybe it wraps back around to the original film I am not sure or can be decently good as the last minions film) but I guess we will learn overtime on what this one will entail and follow on from the next Mario film from the studio (now that one I can get behind).
But what are your opinions on all of these announcements and is there any in particular that you are looking forward to? Let me know what you think down below and lets discuss what you believe will happen in any of them.
So first up releates to the recently released Western from actor Kevin Costner and this is the movie of Horizon: An American Saga. It has been established that for the last few weeks that the film has not garnered the best reception and the likes that the film is also being split into multiple parts (that are all looking to as close of 3 hour runtimes) and it was initially planned that part 2 was dropping next month.... but that was before this week. On Thursday of this week, it was announced out of nowhere that Horizon American Saga Part 2 will not not be releasing on its planned August 16th release date and the reason behind it is due to the poor reception and Box office of Part 1. It is unclear if the likes of the film will see a theatrical release or get a straight to streaming release for the remaining parts but it will be waiting to see of any word on that as it was also confirmed that the 1st part will be releasing to VOD on July 16th, essentially ending the box office of that run very quickly. I feel what will happen is that it will gain a bigger audience from streaming on HBO Max or VOD and see more of an appeal and if it works out well, it will either garner a bigger success on being a streaming based film or have a limited cinema release and then a streaming release but I guess we will have to wait on an update for that project.
Nut on the other side we are talking on a film that is making the big bucks and this is with the excellent follow up of Inside Out 2 as it has now just surpassed The Incredibles 2 to become the highest grossing Pixar film of all time and currently the 4th highest grossing animated film (5th if you count 2019's Lion King but it was tapped as a Live Action Remake so I don't fully count it) and is still going strong. Now it has seen a positive and negative that the positive that it does deserve the success ( I love it, cried throughout moments and so did the other special person who I saw it with and the full review will be out within the next few days) but the issue is that it could see that the only way of success is with the likes of franchising being the big earner but I see Pixar see the success rolling in from originals and Franchises, but overall Great success on this film and I know I will giving another few viewings of this again very soon.
To end this week on a high note is something that I do not need any explanation to and just been shown that most of you know about this announcement from it breaking the internet earlier this week but on Tuesday it was confirmed after a lot of rumours and speculation (as well as a mention from 2 weeks ago that Shrek 5 is now confirmed to be happening. In a brief teaser they unveiled that the 5th film will be releasing on July 1st 2026 and confirmed that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz have confirmed they are back as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona for this film. It is not confirmed yet that Antonio Banderas is in this but most case how The Last Wish ended it seems likely they will make an appearance as well as maybe Kitty and Perrito from that film too (which I hope it does). Besides that no other info has been given but it seems to be exciting and will unite the internet together after all this time and I for one am looking forward to it and also the battle of the 5's between this and Toy Story 5.
2 Iconic Actresses are about to become parents
This one is not a main discussion story but a little congratulations to 2 big named actresses as there has been the announcement of some big news for the both of them. It was announced that Earlier this week that both Margot Robbie and Alexandria Daddario have announced that they are both expected their first child this week with their partners. All I have to say is that this is fantastic news and that I can see both of them being excellent parents as well as being excellent actresses and I wish them all the best in the future of soon to be parents in the future.
A western is heading to a new unknown location while emotions top the charts
So this next story is connected to another film that was unveiled and released recently with a little bit of an update to a continuing part as well as a little update for the progress for another film that has been dominating the charts.
But what are your thoughts of this release change and do you see it get a theatrical release for the rest of them and do you think Inside Out 2 deserves its massive success? Let me know what you think down below.
An all star is coming back
