Weird Mind News Room Episode 97: Dec 30th 2024 - Jan 5th 2025

*if that was him in the movie and him on the streets, then who is playing the music*

Hello again to all of you wonderful people and a very happy new year to you all as we have the first new blog of 2025 and that is of course the next episode of the weekly series of Weird Mind News Room and for this week in particular, it is a bit of a quiet week to start it off as we have a few little new releases, a trailer or 2 and a little roundup of some odd news stories for this week, so lets not waste way too much time on all of this and let us delve into talking on all things media for this week.

New releases to provide a sense of a chill

Movies
Nosferatu
The first of the big new releases of the year will provide a deep sense of fear to spread across the land to shroud the lands in darkness from the presence of a creature of the night, as after nearly a century since the original form was brought to life and based on one of the most acclaimed horror books of all time as Robert Eggers has come to bring a scary new tale to kick off the new year with the release of his take on Nosferatu. Set in the 1830s, the film follows Thomas Hutter, an estate agent who travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, but plagued with horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that is far beyond her control. Reception to this new take has been critically acclaimed and seen as one of the best of 2024 / 2025 already with praise on the direction, performances, the scares and tone and being a faithful but also new take perspective on one of the most well known stories and if you are up to succumbing to the darkness, then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.

We Live in Time

If the likes of Horror is not suiting to you and you prefer something with a bit more heart and provide an emotional tone to it all, then you are in look as we have a bit of a Drama Romcom for you of coincidental and long lasting love can appear from anywhere as we have the release of the new film of We Live in Time. The film follows the story of Almut and Tobias who are brought together by a surprise encounter that changes their lives. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of their more then unconventional love story. Reception to the new film has been well recieved with praise in its love story and performances of the leads of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield and will be a feel good film that will also provide a bit of sadness and mix of emotions to the film and if you are up to check it out yourself of this love story, then you can do so as it is out now in cinemas.

TV Shows
Cunk on Life
As for the last of the new releases (with one other confirmed piece out this week is the big old event of the Golden Globe Awards) is taking the approach of seeing the world from a unique and odd perspective and told from someone that gives the energy and vibe to many when it comes to talking on topics or subject matter we could not care much on but makes it that much entertaining in relatability, as everyone's Favourite deadpan presenter of Philomena Cunk is back once more with an all new series of Cunk on Life. This new series or special will follow the titular presenter as she travels across the globe and talks with who they say are "professionals" as she delves on the big questions in life such as Quantum Physics, Existentialism, Nihilism, Hedonism and at least 4 more isms as well as exploring more different subject matters in how she ses fit to talk about it all. Reception to this new special has been very well recieved with praise to Philomena's dry wit and humor in tackling topics that may seem boring but give it a relatable focus and appeal and also provides a lot of humor that is needed in this time and if you want to check it out for yourself, it is available to stream on Netflix in the Us and I think here but it may be more of the BBC in the UK and Ireland.

Trailers from the Crypt

Marvel animations Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man

So similar to the likes of last week, we only have one trailer to go off of and technically this was also from last week but by the time the episode was written and recorded, the trailer dropped after so I pushed it to this week (which helped in the slow week for trailers), but with the recent wrap up of a multiversal story, we are heading back to the realm of animation and more to the time before the identity reveal and the universal threat to the days of how a kid from queens would get his start as we have recieved the trailer for the upcoming new series of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The series will be set before the events of the MCU Spider-Man films and set in an alternate timeline to the films that will follow the story of Peter Parker's early days of becoming accustomed to the Spider-Man persona while dealing with school, bullies, girls and other messy things that Teens deal with, before he becomes under the wing and mentorship not of Tony Stark but rather of Norman Osbourne. So there has been a lot of discussion online since this trailer dropped that it has a mixed opinion on the animation style and how it is presented. Personally I think I can see where they are going with this with trying to go with a similar comic book style and aesthetic to the beloved Spider-verse films, but more on a smaller scale tv format and I think from what is shown, I think it helps to distinguish it and give it some personality (even if in some parts it looks a little choppy but it may be going with the similar frame rate technique) and I like this concept and approach to the story idea and hopefully it will be a decent narrative of a coming of age tale and given a new perspective to the universe we know and thankfully we don't have to wait too long as we can swing by and catch this new series on Disney+ from January 29th.

News of some possible fear

A space Biker, more arrange of spices and the end of the games
So on the likes of News for this week, we had a collection of some smaller mixed array of news pieces that will consist of a new casting announcement, a possible rumoured project in the works and one more rumoured release date that may have been leaked by accident but could be a potential to come from it and instead of making 3 separate stories, I can put them all into one here so we will get into talking about what had come from this week.
So the first story was the only piece that has been confirmed from this week and this came in the very end of 2024 to ring into the new year and this is in the form of the casting news coming to us from the studio of Warner Brothers and in specifically, the area of a brand that has had a fair amount of studio interference and now been rebooted with the DCU. So we have now entered the DCU with the release of Creature Commandos that has been out in the US since early December and we will be flying high with Superman later this summer, but we do have another character that was announced that will make an appearance in the planned 2nd film of this new universe which is with another Kryptonian and that is with the planned Supergirl movie that stars Australian actress Milly Alcock as there has been another new addition to this roster of characters being introduced to the film and it is the inclusion of a fan favourite that many have wanted to see appear for some time and that is with the announcement that the character of Lobo will make his debut in Supergirl. For those that may not know the character, Lobo is an alien from a planet known as Czarnia who is the last of his kind and in that form has become an intergalactic Bounty Hunter with his space bike and once started as a villain in his original appearance in the early 80s and has morphed to an anti-hero and a popular figure in the comics so it will be interesting to see how they will use him in this first film. It was not the only announcement from this as it was also confirmed that we have a familiar face from the previous DC universe playing the role as it was confirmed that Jason Mamoa will be taking on this role and swapping the green tights for some more Bounty Hunter attire and I think bringing him back for this choice is a well made one too. I am intrigued to see how they will go about this character and what he will look like but I guess we will see by the time the film releases in June 2026.

Staying with Warner Bros for this 2nd story, we have a rumoured discussion in the works that may be in talsk for the moment and possibly jumping too far ahead in concept as we are talking on the series that has been in a lot of people top spot for best film of last year (I would say it may be in the top 10 for me but not really at the top) is the adaptation of the Dune novels. So it is known that we have recieved the 2 part adaptation of the original Dune novel over the last 2-3 years and also know that we have another one on the way in the form of the next book in the series with Dune Messiah which is being worked on by the director of Denis Villeneuve which presumably in out in December 2026 but after that it seems he is done with the series as he sees after Messiah, the books seem to dip in quality, however that has not gone over Warner Bros in understanding as according to some rumours, it looks like they are going to continue this series of books in adapting to films and even another tv show or 2 which is where the concern will start to come into play for this series. What many may not at the moment is that the books of Dune and Dune Messiah will be a lot different in scale, scope and concept as the next book in focus is a lot shorter then the massive adaptation we got recently and it is also the affect where some changes or appeal may change and cause some concern which has been seen already with 2 aspects. First is the case that the cinematographer for the first 2 is not back for this entry as he is also involved with work on another WB project which is the Batman sequel for Matt Reeves and the other aspect comes to the mixed appeal of the recent series of Dune Prophecy that did tackle one of the novels in its 6 episode season but was seen as feeling underwhelming and slightly less of a spectacle for a Dune adaptation and even to HBO standards, though it still has some modest reception on both sides. It becomes a concern that some franchises could stop at a certain point and leave as such (such an example was the Harry potter series that could've been kept as the original films and the one Fantastic Beast spin-off but they got a little greedy and made a planned 5 film spin off that has been abruptly ended after the 3rd and an unnecessary Reboot of the series in tv form) but Warner is known for pushing so many ideas at once and then never fully delivering on them and this becomes the concern with this series as while Frank Herbert has made 5 sequels to his original book, but his son has teamed with an acclaimed sci-fi author to make more stories from before and after the main series that has spanned over 23 more stories, so if its a case that we may see this series be milked dry. Now hopefully it will be kept to Franks stories or stop after a solid trilogy but it does provide concern that Warner will not hear stop and just be distracted with money, but I guess we will have to see how this all turns out.

So the last of the stories is another rumour which comes in the focus with a release date and this is in relation to a recent new release that was just talked about recently and will help to bring the story of said series to an end as we are talking about the final part to the series of Squid Game. So we just got the recent 2nd season of the show last week as a form of a Christmas present from Netflix and the likes of tghe appeal for the show was still decently recieved but for some was a little mixed in opinion in terms of its outcome as many felt that the season was a slight bit too short or was just a little inconclusive. The reason for that was because the story was initially supposed to end with a 2nd season of 8 episodes but the shows creator planned out the story and realized it would fit more over 10 episodes and decided to split the show into 2 seasons instead and wrap it all up in a 3rd and final part while also filming the show back to back of the 2 seasons. Now we have gotten the first half already and it was for a bit of time shortly after where it was projected that we will get the final part for this show sometime in the summer or early fall of this year, but it looks like we may not be waiting too long to find out that exact date and going off of an accidental description from the country it is from, it may have let slip of when this will all come to an end. A day or 2 ago, Netflix Korea dropped a bit of a sizzle reel of the recent season and a possible little tease of the next season itself on their social but they had to quickly take it down or private the video as they accidentally revealed the date for the last season a little too early, but people got the image and discovered that the final season will be dropping supposedly on June 27th this year. This would line up with the idea of the summer or fall projected release window and may work for placement for the 3 big shows to come from the streaming giant in dates with one being a spring or summer release, one as the summer to fall and the last as a fall or winter release. Now as of writing Netflix has not responded or made any announcement, so this is all speculation for the moment, but a gap that long will help with finalizing some last minute fixes and touchups needed and help to bring the series to a possible satisfying conclusion but we will see how it all comes about.

But with all of that I would like to know your thoughts on this mish mash of news stories from your thoughts on the choice of casting for Lobo, your thoughts on the Dune series continuing and when do you see the final season for the Korean series to drop? Let me know what you think down below and we can discuss it there.

And with all of that, this brings us to the end of the 97th edition of Weird Mind News Room and I do hope that you enjoyed the discussion for what is out in the realm of entertainment and media for another week. Let me know your thoughts on all that was discussed below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day every day and I will see you all in the next episode :)

Take care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
