Weird Mind News Room Episode 128: August 4th - 10th
*music for body swapping or spooky runs at 2:17am*
Hello again to all of you wonderful people of this part of the information superhighway to the next episode of the weekly series of Weird Mind News Room where this week of course we will continue the usual affair of this series but this week it is more of a lighter amount of content in terms of new releases, some trailers and news stories, but the length may vary so lets not waste time on intros and lets get to talking on all things media for another week.
Freaky batch of new releases
Movies
Freakier Friday
So we are starting off the new releases of this week in the focus of a film that has seen a follow up after being a project that is over 2 decades old at this point and has been seen as a bit of a cult classic in the form of the leading ladies getting a bit twisted in reality and learn to find themselves and respect one another. Well after 2 decades, these 2 are back again and about to experience the same situation all those years ago but now will be double the trouble this time around as we have the release of the sequel tp the original Disney take on the body Swap comedy with Freakier Friday. The film will see the return of mother and daughter Tess and Anna who discover that the likes of Lightning may indeed strike twice in a rare occasion as the experience they had 2 decades ago seems to take hold again and see them swap bodies but instead of just the 2 of them, it also now involves Anna's older daughters. Reception seems to be seen as been modest to well recieved that while praise has been given to the returning leads of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, the film feels a little out of focus in the focus of the 2 stories and is not the most original but still shows some signs of heart and focus in the narrative and if you want to reminisce in this project and check it out for yourself then you catch this body swap out now in cinemas.
Weapons
For the 2nd of the films for this week is taking a more of a spooky approach as there is plenty of unsettling scares and outcomes to a project like this and in some cases could tap into your deepest fears (in this case I have 2 phobias or fears, one is hemophobia, the fear of blood and gore, and the other is in the focus of this project) that in all sense of of if this happened in your hometown with no explanation and a sense of uncertainty as to everything going on, how far will you search for answers and what unsettling creepy outcome could occour from it all, as Zach Cregger is back once more from his horror beginnings with Barbarian (that also somewhat connects to this film) with his 2nd horror (and 2nd film of this year) with the new film of Weapons. The film will tell of a strange mystery that occours in a small community town where one night at exactly 2:17 am, all but one child from the same class suddenly wake up, walk downstairs, walk out the front door and disappear into the night with no explanation and a community is left questioning who or what is behind the disappearance and why is it only with one teachers classroom. Reception on this follow up from the director has been highly acclaimed with the film being praised for the performances (particularly of the leads of Julia Garner and Josh Brolin), its story, cinematography and horror elements and has been labelled as one of the best Horrors of the year in a year of some very strong horror movies and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can also check this film out now in cineams.
Tv Shows
Wednesday Season 2 Part 1
We are keeping it a little in the horror element in the first of the tv shows for this week as it will be a case of being a case that they may be a little bit creepy and a little kooky, a tiny bit mysterious and a bit spooky, and sure could be a little bit ooky but I guess you will get it with that certain family. But in the case of things we are not focused on all of the family but rather with one particular member of the youngest female of the family as a new semester has begun and things are getting a little bit more spooky as we have the release of the first half of the 2nd season to the Addams Family based project of Wednesday. The new season will see Wednesday's Journey will become more darker and more complex as she will navigate family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries all while propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore Academy as she tries to stop the death of her roommate that she may be the one that causes it from a dark premonition. Reception on the first half of this season has so far been decently received with praise to the evolved story, performances (particularly with Jenna Ortega being the standout as the member of the Addams Family) and building story, even if some bits feel a little messy or not fully completed yet but that's what comes with the season split in 2 and if you are all for checking out the rest of this project, then you can catch the first 4 episodes of this season now on Netflix, with the 2nd half dropping in a months time on September 3rd.
King of the Hill Revival
As for the 2nd show for this week is a return to a small part of the states that has not been in focus for some time now that has seen a lot of growing up for the citizens of the town but after being away for a fair bit of time, they are back again for some new misadventures with this family and the neighbors around them as after 15 years since the original series ended, it is time for the revivial and return of Hank Hill and his family as we have the release of the new revival of the adult animated series of King of the Hill. The new series will be set 15 years after the events of the original and will see Hank and Peggy hill return to Arlen, Texas after working all that time in Saudi Arabia. The season will show how the town, and their friends, have changed in their absence, particularly with their son Bobby, now 21, as he navigates adulthood as a chef in Dallas Texas. Reception on this new revival like the original series has seen some great acclaim with praise to the series for its stories, characters, humour and still retaining the harm the original series had all that time ago with some new focus on the modern topics and if you are all for checking out and see if this boy is all right, then you can catch this full new season now on Hulu and Disney+
Video Games
Mafia the old country
As for the sole Video game release for this week, we are heading back to the past by about a century to the cultural south parts of Italy to a time when power, corruption, trust and family were the focus of keeping your head above water and from getting yourself killed, it will see a return to the world of organized crime as we have the all new entry in the popular Mafia series with the new title of Mafia the Old Country. The game takes place before the events of the original Mafia game and set in the early 20th century in Sicily during the regime of Mussolini with the title being the rise and formation of the Sicilian Mafia where you will play as Enzo Favara as we see and experience his journey from his childhood of indentured labour in the sulfur mines to becoming a valiant member of the Torrisi crime family. Reception on this new title has garnered some favourable reception with praise to the visuals, characters and the story, though some of the mechanics and gameplay functions has been mixed as feeling a little lacking and could use some more updated functions but still seems like a strong contender for one of this years best game titles and if you want to play it for yourself then you can play it now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Albums
Shadow Academy - Prisms
And the last of the new releases that we have for this week that for me appeals in the realm of some new music that may not be the most known or appeal to everyone but it does to me and just want to give some of my odd taste to people as we have a new album selection of music from the world of Musician Jim Roach and the vocals of one Dan Avidan as his 2nd band of Shadow Academy is back with an all new album known as Prisms. This of course will see an all new selection of all new tracks and songs from this band that will consist of the title track itself as well as others like Across the great unknown, Icarus, One Way Mirror, Mask of Many colours and many more in this selection of music that has a variety of genre and tones. Now I am unclear on how reception on music is shown but it seems like a good amount of the tracks seem like a proper solid sound and appeal and will be listening to them a fair amount over the next few days and if you want to have a listen, it is available to purchase as a physical CD or LP on their website or where records or albums are sold and also available to listen to where you like to listen.
Trailers for a run in the night
Shelby Oaks
So we start on the trailers for this week with a focus to a project that has a bit more of a horror based concept that started as a piece of internet mystery that is unclear if this was recently made or was a real supernatural mystery, and what better focus to have it all then with another YouTube creator taking a crack at it all following the success of the 2 brothers that made one of this years best horrors, as YouTube creator Chris Struckmann and horror auteur Mike Flanagan have teamed up for a new horror mystery, as we have the release of the first trailer for the new film of Shelby Oakes. The film follows the mystery of the disappearance of a young woman named Riley Brennan, who back in the 2000s hosted a YouTube channel with her friends known as the Paranormal Paranoids that saw them filming in various haunted locations before things took a grisly and mysterious turn when they investigated the Abandoned town of Shelby Oaks, Ohio, that sees Riley's 3 friends found Murdered and a tape left behind that shows Riley either being taken or killed by an unidentifiable man. This soon leads to Mia, Riley's Younger sister, believing with hope that she is still alive and has searched for her for about 12 years, when she comes across a 2nd tape that contains contents that convince Mia that something sinister is involved with Riley's Vanishing. SO in most case I am well aware of the original concept and videos that started off from a discussion from a reddit thread and Youtube series that led to a lot of conspiracies and discussions as to what was going on and what is the outcome of all of this and from the looks of this trailer it is giving a vibe that we may be in for a treat getting a big screen conclusion that makes complete sense overall and from what I have heard from early reception, it really seems like it is in a strong acclaim and could be another strong entry of horror for this year and I know for sure that I will be giving this a look into and you can as well with the mystery unfolding into cinemas from the 3rd of October.
Him
Now for another horror in the form of a bit of a physchological thriller that covers in an error that in all case I would not have much of a big interest to but in all case, it is mainly from one exception in the person of a big name behind the camera in a producer role as we have a new sports based horror thrilller that will question how far will you go and how much of your sanity will you lose, all to prove that you have what it takes for the big leagues as we have recieved an all new trailer for the new film of Him. The film follows a promising young up-and-coming football player (Tyriq Withers) who is invited to train at the isolated compound of a dynasty teams aging QB1. The legendary almost retired Quarterback (Marlon Wayans) will take his protégé on a blood-chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame, power and pursuit of excellence at any cost. It is a case that like I said about the animated film of Goat from Sony last week is that I am not one that really gives much of an appeal in the realm of projects based on sports but there is a case that their is a bit of an exception like how Goat was with the stylish animation and with this one it is the names of Marlon Wayans in the roles but also with Jordan Peele involved with his filmography as a creator post the comedy shows have been pretty strong from his trilogy of films (and his next directed one next year) and for the likes of the film Monkey Man last year and it seems like it is in good hands and I am sure will have some deep meanings and hopefully will be another strong Horror contender for this year and I am sure it will all be set to play when the film releases into cinemas also from October 3rd, but 2 weeks earlier in the states on September 18th.
The Paper
Now the only tv series trailer that we have gotten for this week is seeing us making a return to a certain district to the realm of the concept of the everyday working life documentary / Mockumentary, where we had seen the ideas of a place that worked and sold paper from a company in Scranton Pennsylvania. But now we are hopping a state or 2 over to give the focus of some of that paper being used for certain means of telling stories as we have a new trailer hot off the presses for the new series from the crew that created the Office with the new series of The Paper. The series will focus on the same crew that made Dunder Mifflin a famous name in the world, take on their next task all the way in Toledo Ohio, where the crew will focus their efforts on a company known as the Toledo Truth-Teller, a historic but declining Midwestern that has seen itself trying to make a name in resurrecting themselves in the hiring of volunteer reporters and try to prove that they still have a chance in a changing world in how news is delivered. So in all case I can see where the likes of the appeal of the original UK and then the US based version of the Office has seen a success even still to this day and I am sense that they are trying with the likes of this new series while still having a bit of a familiarity to the look and aesthetic, as well as the case of one Oscar Martinez returning back again for this new series. While it has not fully gripped me yet, I am sure there will be some appeal to this project overall and I am sure it may work out (I mean it can't be as bad as the Australian take)but I am sure we will see when the first new issue is delivered onto Peacock in the states and Sky and Now in the UK and Ireland from the 4th and 5th of September.
The Thursday Murder Club
And the last of the trailers for this week is in the focus to an adaptation take from a more recent project from an acclaimed mind that will show that even at their age, they still have a strong mind and a clear conscience to crack the case, even if they are restricted to lights out and medication at certain time, as we have recieved the official trailer for the new adaptation of the popular book series of The Thursday Murder Club. Based on the first novel in the franchise, the film will follow a group of amateur Septuagenarian sleuths who love to tackle and solve cold cases in their comfy retirement home that consists of a former spy, a former nurse, a former trade union official and a former psychiatrist. But when an actual murder takes place in their local area, they will soon step up to the challenge and take on the case before the killer strikes again. It has been seen that we have seen a massive influx in appeal of the Whodunnit and have seen many different way and approach to it and I can sense with this books as well that they provide the appeal of some old folks that love the sense of murder mystery getting the chance to prove their work, even with their past that they can all come together to solve something that from the footage looks like it will be a bit of good fun and hopefully will be a well respected adaptation of the first novel and lead to a series of successful adaptations of the books and I am all for checking this out and it is not too long away as the mystery will get underway on Netflix in about 3 weeks time on August 28th.
News that is less weird or a mystery
Respecting to the hits of the Indies
So its another week of news and similar to last week, the first of the stories will be talking on another Direct from the world of Nintendo, but in this instance, it is not another Partner showcase or even a first party focused on (likely case we will be back here in a month with one of them and a Mario centric direct for the 40th anniversary of the character) but instead we are here with a focus to the much shorter event of the Indie World where we have a bit of a selection to discuss of announcements and given this one was short, I will also fly through this one as well and get in focus on what was announced for this week, so lets delve into the announcements.
So the event started with a new look at the next title from the developers of the acclaimed Hollow Knight series with Mina the Hollower, a new title that has you as the small mouse like adventurer who is on a quest to save a cursed island from Monsters and hazards and restore the land to piece and prosperity and if its like their flagship title I am sure it is well worth playing with its release October 31st this year. Then we got a brief look at the title of Strange Antiquities as you become a custodian for a shop dealing with Occult Oddities and use them to help some of the townspeople of Undermere with their problems and also remember to pet your cat to keep the sanity and I am sure will be an interesting title to try out with its release on September 17th.
Then we had a look at the title of Opus Prism Peak that has you as a weary Photographer who finds himself trapped outside of his own world where armed with only your old camera and accompanied by a mysterious girl, you will explore the world, learn of the story and secrets of this world and find a way to get back home and it does look like it could be a really nice and fun adventure to play with the title releasing sometime this fall.
the 2nd last title of the event was the unveiling of Go Go town where you are the mayor of this ever expanding and bustling metropolis and it is up to you to construct and maintain the city in how you see fit and I am sure it will be well worth making a dream city to your own desire with the title release in the Spring of next year. And to wrap up the event and confirmed for realse on the same day is with the acclaimed and award winning title of UFO 50 that will have you play a massive 50 game compilation of classic pixel based games in many differing genres and I can see why the title had such an appeal and will be well worth trying out in due time on pc and on the go.And with all of that brought the Indie world showcase to an end and I am not one to judge on the likes of Indie titles but there was a lot of interesting looking titles to look forward to. Sure there was one everyone was hoping to see get a date announced which was of course Silksong but I am sure we will get something this month from its reveal event at Gamescon with the playable demo but overall a nice little showcse of the growing world of Indie Games.
But what do you think of this event, are you excited to try any of these and what titles were you hoping to see from this event and when do you expect to see the next Nintendo Direct itself? let me know what you think down below in the comments.
Now the first of these discussions is with the focus of a film adaptation that I have for a bit of time forgot was on the way as I had not talked on it since way back in 2023 but this week we got the full confirmation of the complete cast of names that will be appearing in the Netflix animated adaptation of Roald Dahl's the Twits. So initially the first of the cast that we had known about being cast in this project was with 4 names with The Sticky and Cocaine Bear star Margo Martindale as Mrs Twit, British Comedian and Actor Johnny Vegas as Mr Twit, Black Swan and Thor star Natalie Portman asMary Muggle-Wump and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as a character named Pippa. But now we hot a massive list of names involved including Superman star Alan Tudyk as Sweet Toed Toad, Brooklyn Nine Nine's Jason Mantzoukas as Wayne John John-John, Veep's Timothy Simons as Marty Wumple-Wump, Rebecca Wioscky as Dee Dumdie-Dungle, Dee Bradley Baker as Muggle-Wump Efforts and Florbnorbles, Nicole Byer as Beverly Onion, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Beesha Balti , Mark Proksch as Hrovis Dungle and many more names to add to a massive line up of names to this project. Now I feel a lot of these are new additions as I remember the story being a little different but maybe giving a little more to the book could work (like it did with Fantastic Mr Fox and other adaptations) and I will give this a look into in due time. Now hopefully we will get a trailer for this new take soon enough as the film is not too far away from release and is in fact coming out later this year with a relase of the 17th of October on Netflix so I am sure it may be worth a look.
then from one animated project to another, we are heading over to the realm of Sony and we are talking on a series that has been ever so hyped for many in the industry and that is with the case of the Spider-verse films and projects. Now since its inception in 2018 with Into the Spider-verse the project has really popped off in terms of focus to the world of building on new ideas and concepts, with one of them we know is on the way next year with a project based on Spider-Man Noir, as well as ones based on the Spider-Women and a possible one on Venom and of course the trilogy conclusion, but I feel another one in this form of universe cannot hurt and this one is going in a more rebellious side of things cause it was announced on Wednesday of this week that we are getting another spin off film based on the characters form the trilogy of films and it is with one of my favourite new additions from Across the Spider-verse and that is with Spider-Punk. Now it is also confirmed that while Daniel Kaluuya is confirmed back as the voice of the character, it is not the only aspect of it that he is involved with as it is also confirmed that he is also co-writing the project itself and that some of the original creators of this series of films of Lord Miller and Pascal are reportedly set to produce the project. Now I am all for a new focused spider-man project especially with Punk in the role as I feel it could be really something interesting with the more rebellious form of the character and taking on some unique forms of the rogues gallery with his unique scrapbook stop motion art style and I am sure we will get an idea of this project and concept in due time if this will be set before or after the trilogy of films or when we can expect to see this films release but once I do hear anything new about this version, I will of course update on it in a later episode.
Casting to franchises of terrible people, punk rockers, special agents and a return of a religious figure
The 2nd story of this week is one that is a bit of a hodge Podge so to say as we have a bit of some focus on some casting confirmations, new projects announced, rumoured names for a big franchise and an unexpected sequel getting a bit of a change up for the follow up, but we can delve into those now and see what comes of all of this.
Now in the case of franchise continuations and if you have been given a sense of premonitions of avoiding possible grisly demises or enjoy them for some reason (yeah I see you out there, I am looking at you dead in the eyes, you sick freak), well then you are in luck as after the success and reception on the recent entry of the series, it is confirmed that a 7th film in the Final Destination series has been confirmed to be in the works and one of the writers for the Bloodlines film will be developing the project as it is. Now I am sure it could be a case that some life has been rejuvenated back into this series but there is a part of me feeling that like some other series like Scream or Halloweens revival, it will see a slew of follow ups that will probably have the appeal as the first in that attempts of the project but it could be a case that if the appeal and approach of this film worked well it would be to follow that formula and just work it in some unique ways. As for me I can give or take the concept but I am sure it will appeal to a few other fans of the series and all power to them but I will guess we will see how this follow up and how well it does when it eventually releases.
Now for a bit of a brief update from one of the weeks new release directors as we have a bit of news in relation to the upcoming adaptation of Resident Evil from the Weapons director of Zach Cregger. Now there was a lot of discussion since this announcement as to what could his project entail and if they will follow a certain games story and certain charcters, but it seems it is going in a bit of a different direction as according to Zach, it seems it will be a new story in this universe but will not be focusing on any of the games iconic characters, essentially taking the approach of the long running film series and introduce a new character to focus on instead. Now I feel in this regards that I can see this version of the project work well but also see a bit of some hoping to see a new take on the likes of Chris, Leon, Claire, Jill, Wesker or anyone else of this iconic game series but I get it will help distinguish it from the series as its own thing and also not to ruin these characters that may have had the situation done to them beforehand in other film adaptations. I am intrigued to see what he will do with a film in this beloved franchise and I am sure it is a top choice creative of making something that will leave a good sense of fear in the process but I am sure we will get an idea of this project and all that juicy details by the release of the project in September of next year. And the last bit of this oddity of a news story section is in the focus of a film that you probably didn't expect to see getting a follow up but it is a case we have gotten some news in relation to a film sequel to the Passion of the Christ. Now if you know the story from the reigious text that you know Jesus was crucified and dies on the cross before he was put in a case and then 3 days later he rose from the dead and in the case of this follow up it will be in the focus of that and will be seeing Mel Gibson and the actor that played the religious Figure of Jesus with Sound of Freedom and possible conspiracy nut Jim Caviezel coming back and being de-aged for the role. Now that is not the whole story for this situation as it was also confirmed that this film will not be a one and done but rather the film is being split into 2 parts with the first half releasing on what is essentially Good Friday of March 26th 2027 and the 2nd half is releasing a little over a month later on May 3rd with the reason of that release date being the time after Jesus rose from the dead that he then ascended back into Heaven. Now it is a case of wondering if this will work out in the likes of a follow up to a well known story from the holy gospel or if the original film that was a winner of many awards and was for about 15 years the highest grossing R-rated film before Joker and Deadpool took that spot from them should be just a one and done thing, but I guess we will see how it will all come about in due time by the release in 2 years time.
But what do you make of all of these stories, are you excited for a new adaptation on The Twits, are you up for a Spider-Punk film, will you watch a new Final Destination movie, do you see a new focused character for the Resident evil film as a good or bad thing, who do you want to see play Bond in the new film and will you be watching the 2 film sequels to Passion of the Christ? Let me know what you think down below.
A Lawsuit that I feel makes no sense in the outcome
So the last of the stories that we have for this week is one that I feel I will be giving a brief rundown and update to something as we have some update to a bit of legal drama news and it is something we haven't talked on for over a year now and that is to do with the Actress of Gina Carano. Now back in February last year, I brought up the discussion that Carano has been looking to take Disney to court over the supposed unfair dismissal from her role as Cara Dune in the Star Wars universe and Mandalorian series and in this instance got the aid of someone that would not be the most trustworthy to help find it and that person... is Elon Musk. Now since that story, nothing new had been made about the whole ordeal but that all changed just this week when it was announced that the Lawsuit has been settled and it looks like it may be the case that she could be returning for working with Disney and in some cases this could be a bit of a concern for the studio. Now in my thoughts on this I would be a little concerned as it was a case that since her firing, I had a bit of a glance at her socials since then and it seems that she has the normal posts and then post some weird ones in there as well that are more of conspiracy peddling (but a case not all the time) and some others that may be a bit of a concern, as well as the case that they would be a supporter of the man that seems to be destroying the concept of democracy in many different ways but seen as saving it in his own mindset and I really don't know how this will appeal to people in many ways. Now the issue I see with this is likely they can't just shoe horn her back into the Mandalorian as that seems to be wrapped up as the story seems to be coming to an end with the film out next May but the other I question is if they were forced to do this by the government or how they will add her into stuff as people are a bit mixed on this whole ordeal and I wonder if they will need to control what she says on her socials as it seems that was the catalyst for why she got fired in the first place. Now in this instance I am not going to go too deep into trying to figure this out and really how I feel about all of this cause it feels a little messy but I am sure we will see how this all comes about in the future and if there is any updates to it all I will provide them in a later episode.
But what do you make of this whole ordeal itself, do you see this as a good thing of having her back with Disney or Lucasfilm, should they have kept fighting the defense and do you see this resolved partnership lasting long or a repeat of what happened before? Let me know what you think down below.
And with all of that, this bring us to the end of the 128th edition of the weekly series of Weird Mind News Rom and I do hope that you enjoyed my Ramblings for another week, let me know your thoughts on everything that was discussed down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday doing many great things and I will see you all in the next episode.
Take care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
