Weird Mind News Room Episode 141: Nov 3rd - 9th
*Music for fighting for proving worth*
Well hello again to you fine people of all types, my name is Sam and welcome back to Weird Mind News Room where I delve into talking on all that there is to catch up on of the new content that has released for the week including new releases, trailers and news from the week of entertainment media, so lets not waste time on all of these intros and lets delve into talking on all things media this week has to offer.
New Releases that survive the dangers
Movies
Predator Badlands
Lets begin on new releases and we talk on a character that has been a staple of the movie scene for about 4 decades now and has gone from the jungles, to the cities and to even fighting against the most dangerous organism of deep space, but this time around where we would see him as the presumed antagonist, this time we may be rooting for it to prove their worth as Prey Director Dan Trachtenberg is coming back once more to this popular franchise (and the 2nd time this year) with the new film of Predator Badlands. The film will be set in the distant future and see a young Predator, who has been cast out of his clan and outgunned against human survivors who will find himself an ally in Thia, a young Female Android and will soon embark on a long treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary and to prove his worth. Reception on this new entry, similar to his other projects of Prey and Killer of Killers has been very well recieved with praise on its concept, perspective of the character, story, visuals, action and some of the humour, with some small critiques feeling the CG can be a little messy in places or could be a little more structured better but seems more overall that Trachtenberg is the right man for some new life for this franchise and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can catch it now in cinemas.
Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein
The next of the big title releases is the return of an iconic creation from the minds of this acclaimed Mexican director where we have seen many of his unique creations of monsters and creatures of the night in many forms of action and comics, to even as far as a love story, but its time he takes a page from a classic and give his own spin on the original man made monster as we have finally been given the release (albeit after a disasterous limited cinema release) of Guillermo Del Toro's take on Frankenstein. The film will be set in Easter Europe in the 19th Century and will follow Dr. Pretorious who will be on a mission to track down Frankenstein's Monster - believed to have died in a fire 40 years ago, in order to continue and honor the experiments that were created by the former Dr. Frankenstein himself. Reception on this new take on the classic novel has been very well recieved as well with praise to its story, its characters and performances, visual aesthetic and effects and for being a well crafted love letter to the original man made monster story and if you want to see this come alive, you can watch this new take on it now on Netflix.
Die, My Love
For the next film of the week, I am sure we have all heard some form of the old saying about the ideals of first comes love, then comes marriage and then at some point about a baby in a baby carriage (that is if you are more then wanting a child) but in the case of this, it seems like there is a bit of an affect to the aftermatch of that 3rd part as this next project will be showing in some way or another as we have the newest film from the studio of Mubi who brings us the release of the new unsettling dark comedy drama with the film of Die, My Love. It follows a young couple of Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jackson (Robert Pattinson), who move from New York to Rural Montana to have a quieter life. As they soon adjust to their new surroundings and becoming parents, Grace soon begins to struggle with postpartum depression and feelings of Isolation and psychological distress and her deteriorating mental health soon drives their marriage into unsettling and unpredictable territory. Reception on the film from the film festivals and up to release seems to be well recieved with praise tot the performances of the main leads, particularly with Lawrence, and for its depiction of a common affect that some mothers experience post birth that is not often given a focus on, though some of the stylized aspects and themes in the film may be a little mixed or lost on some of the people in the film, but if you are up for seeing this new film itself then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.
Anemone
This last film of the week is seeing the return of an actor that has for a few times now and then seen himself retire from the film industry in acting but always seems to find himself back for another go around of a film that really peaks their interest and it seems to be no exception with this new project as hes back in the starring role in the new film being directed by his son of Ronan Day-Lewis as we have the release of the new film known as Anemone. The film will focused and tell the story of a troubled recluse (Day Lewis), who soon comes into contact with his estranged brother (Sean Bean) who arrives back into his life and must find a way to convince him to come home and reunite with his family. Now reception on this film has seen a bit of a mixed outcome, that while the likes of the cinematography and performances are praised, particularly with the return of Daniel Day Lewis in the lead role, the film has been hit with more of a critique in the form of the screenplay being a little bit messy but I am sure some will appreciate the famous actors return and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can also catch this film out now in cinemas.
TV Shows
Pluribus
Moving to the shows of the week and the first one is seeing the return of a new series created by the creator of one of the most critically acclaimed dup of shows in modern history of a high school teacher turned drug kingpin and the life of a underworld lawyer as they are back to bring with them a new twisted take on a the world ravaged by a strange outbreak that has some strange outcomes for a select dozen as we have the release of the new series from Vince Gilligan known as Pluribus. Set in New Mexico, the series will follow novelist Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), who is one of only Twelve people in the world that is immune to an extraterrestrial virus that transforms the worlds population into a peaceful and content hive mind that have become known as the "Others". reception on this new series from Gilligan seems to be so far very well recieved with praise on this new take on the sci-fi genre and for the focus on suspense and social commentary that it delivers as well and seen as one of this years best new series of television and if you want to check it out for yourself, the first 2 episodes are now available to stream on Apple TV+ with a new episode releasing every Friday.
All's Fair
But as for the other tv show of the week will not need much of a trail or a discussion and while a civil battle may occour, it will all come together in the end and if things go awry, at least those working will look good while doing so as Ryan Murphy is going from killers to legal drama with the release of the new series of All's Fair. The series will follow a successful divorce Lawyer (Kim Kardashian) and the owner of an all female law firm in LA and will show and prove to many that being a Lawyer is not just a man's job and in the process will look good while doing it. Reception on this series however has been critically panned to all hell where for a bit of time it was sitting at a 0% (and has become the 15th media piece to receive a 0 from the Guardian) reception with many issues stemming to the bad writing and the very lackluster and poor performance from the lead star of Kardashian and has been seen as one of the worst shows in recent memory, but if you are morally curious to check it out, you can watch the first 3 episodes now on Disney+ with a new episode every Tuesday.
Squid Game the Challenge Season 2
We have one more show in focus for this week and while we have seen the conclusion of the original series this live event is based on a couple of weeks ago, it is still a case that the games are just beginning and a big cash prize is on the cards once more as the games become real (bar all the death and violence) as we have the 2nd season of Squid Game the Challenge. Similar to the first season and based on the popular Korean series, it will see 456 contestants take on a selection of 6 different challenges and go head to head to one another in order to take home a massive cash prize that gets bigger and bigger with every eliminated contestant. Reception on this follow up seems to be slightly fairer then the last season with praise on the contestants and recreation of the games, though the likes of this series may still be marred by the behind the scenes issues first raised in season 1 with the poor conditions for the contestants, but if you want to see what the new season will come of this then you can catch the new season on Netflix with a new episode released every Tuesday.
Video Games
Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment
The last of the release for the week and the only focused title of game for this week (besides the conclusion to the 3rd game of the popular found footage horror games of Amanda the Adventurer) is taking us back to the vast lands of the kingdom of Hyrule, where we were given some bit of clues in the recent game about the trails and containment of the demon King, but in this title, we will be getting a whole more of a better context to it all as we have the release of the 3rd game in the popular crossover battle series with the release of Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment. this entry will take the inspiration from the story and lore alluded to us in the memories of Tears of the Kingdom where we will follow the story of Princess Zelda after she is transported back in time to the early days of the Kingdom of Hyrule and will help the original rulers and the 4 champions of the land join forces and battle their way to save the kingdom and imprison the demon King of Ganondorf and stop him before he destroys the land in his image. Reception on this new title seems to be well recieved with praise on the expanding of the story beats from Tears of the Kingdom, the roster of characters to play and choose from, the gameplay and visual aesthetic and is seen as a well established side piece to the long awaited follow up of the acclaimed game and if you want to play it for yourself it is available to play now on Nintendo Switch 2.
Trailers to come alive
Five Nights at Freddy's 2
From New releases to trailer and the first of these to focus on is with me bringing you to ask a very simple question: "Are you ready...... Fore Freddy once again? As we are taking a trip back to the expansive franchise of these pizza parlor's once more with some new additions and updates made as we have the final trailer release to the sequel of the popular indie horror game turned film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's 2. The film is set 1 year after the events of the original movie of the characters experiencing the supernatural events at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza with the stories of what occoured being twisted into a campy local legend that spans the first ever Fazfest. Former Security guard Mike and police officer Vanessa have kept the truth from Mike's little sister Abby about the fate of her animatronic friends. But one night when she sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, it will soon set in motion a terrifying series of events that reveals dark secrets about the true origins of Freddy's, and unleashing a long forgotten horror that was hidden away for decades. As a fan of the franchise for a long bit of time, I can see the likes of where some of the concept of what can they do with a plot to this series as if you know the series you know the story is not always that straight forward and for the length of the last decade or more, many fans and theorists have tried to piece the lore of this series together in some cohesive way that I can understand the sense of confusion and mixed appeal from a fun critics and others that may not be overly familiar with the games and lore that probably made them feel the film was lacking. Now I went to see the original and enjoyed it a fair bit (albeit with some of its issues that I will get to in my eventual review for that film) and I feel it seem that with the creator involved he knows what the fans want and from the footage it looks like another hopefully promising outcome that maybe could get some stronger appeal overtime but I guess we will see but either way I'm excited to check this out and its not too long away as the show will begin in just under a months time on December 5th.
Michael
Next of the trailers is seeing us taking a trip to the focus of another life of a famous face in the industry and while we have had some memorable ones like the iconic front man of Queen, the Rocket Man himself and even the likes of a recent form of a man born to run, a poor man's attempt at a Ziggy Stardust and the King of Rock and Roll, but this one will take that title of King but for more in the realm of pop as after some time and some delay from its initial release at the beginning of last month we were finally given a trailer for the new biopic known simply as Michael. The film will of course follow the life and career of Michael Jackson (Jackson's cousin Jaafar) as we follow the legacy of his career from his early days as a member of the Jackson Five all the way to pop superstardom in the 1980s and beyond. So the likes of this film was such a mystery and one that I had wondered about for a long time on what approach they would go to this film as it had a bit of a rocky development from working over a few years, a couple of delays out of this year and some reports that they had to rework some elements of the 3rd act due to some legal issues with the portrayal of someone that caused some scandal for the artist in the early 90s and discussions of it being split into 2 films but from what I can see it looks like the 2 film concept may be still a thing if it seems to be focusing on the career up to where he popped off in success in the 80s and then a 2nd maybe the whole more scandals and questionable appropriate conduct alleged against him up to his death around 16 years ago and given reports this film is aiming for a 3.5 hour runtime, I would not be surprised in this outcome but I am interested in checking it out and hopefully a more manageable runtime will be given by the films release into cinemas from April 24th next year.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2
Our last trailer for the week that I am aware of is the case of the tales of Gods and ancient powerful beings that we were told of in tales as young children, but in the case of this one, they live among us in the modern setting and when it goes into chaos it will take one young hero who may be half god but he sure has a lot of might as after 2 years since we were first introduced to this character, we have gotten a presumed final trailer for the upcoming 2nd season of the adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The new season will be based on the 2nd novel of the series with Sea of Monsters and be set a year after the events of the first season with Percy returning back to Camp Half-Blood, finding it out under threat by Kronos' Forces and Grover now appearing to be missing. This will see Percy go on a quest to the Sea of Monsters to find and obtain the golden fleece and save the camp. So I may not know too much on the likes of this series in general in terms of ever reading the books but I am interested in checking them out at some point and I can see that it seem that its showing a lot more appeal and promise compared to the 2 films from the late 2000s or early 2010s and it seems like there is some hope that some of the fan favourite characters from the books and it will be interesting to see if the appeal that was first seen in the first season will still be present in this one but I guess we will see the god become unleashed once more in due time with this new season starting in a months time on December 10th.
News not to be imprisoned away
New dates for Music, Creatures and Crime
So we have 2 somewhat small news stories for this week in focus with the first one containing a selection of some announcements of planned release date projections and a slight delay of some other projects in particular but let us delve into what these project set to entail and what we are expecting and when.
Then from musicians fighting monsters and demons to the focus of a return of some specific creatures, we have been given some update about a return of an 80s classic creature feature this week as after 35 years since the sequel came along, it was announced earlier this year that Director Chris Columbus was working on a 3rd entry of the Gremlins series and it was just announced this week that we now have a projected release date with the film set for release by Warner Bros on November 19th 2027, marking about 2 years away for the release of the follow up. Now not much else is really known with this follow up besides Columbus set to direct the film and the only other name that is involved in the project is with Steven Spielberg who will be set as an executive producer for this 3rd film and I am sure there will be some idea soon enough of what we can expect of this 3rd entry to this popular series, but in the case we get any new updates on it from the creatives or studio, I will update in a later episode.
But what do you make of these release windows, are you excited for a K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel, will you be watching a 3rd Gremlins film and do you see GTA 6 stick to this new date or be delayed into early 2027? Let me know what you think down below.
Projects reported for fighting monsters, bar brawls and Kaijus
As for the 2nd story of this week is more in the focus of some announcements whether its a return of a franchise with some returning faces, new additions or a new title with a possible release date attached to it but we will see what these selection of titles will entail.
The next project in focus is with another new title coming to us that will have some elements based on the creations from one Jim Henson, as while I talked about a project a few weeks back confirming a new special based on the Muppets is on the way sometime next year with Sabrina Carpenter as a guest star on this planned backdoor pilot, its not the only project in the works on the world of these characters as it was announced this week that a new film based on the popular character of Miss Piggy is also reported to be in the world with the project being produced by Oscar winning actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone which seems like a very interesting approach to the tale. I wonder what the approach of this film will entail if it will have some big production of glitz and glamour that is fit for this Muppet or if it will be more of a smaller grounded approach, similar to the likes of that Kermit's Swamp Years film from the early 2000s but I will be interested to see what will come of this project and hopefully will see the revival of the Muppets from these 2 projects. Now like the other 2 projects its unknown on when this film will be releasing but if I hear anything else about it I will provide it in a later episode.
Lastly is with the announcement from this week of a follow up to a film that came out of nowhere 2 years ago and gave us one of the best interpretations of the kaiju monster himself as this week we got the confirmation of the title to the Oscar winning film of Godzilla Minus One with the title now set to be known as Godzilla Minus 0 or as its shown from the logo as Goo. It also may have been given a projected release window for the follow up with it reported to be set to release in late 2026 with filming set to begin soon in New Zealand and Norway which I feel it could work out for that release window. Now I really enjoyed the Minus One entry so I will be checking this one out and hopefully it will be as entertaining and appealing as that one and bring with it the appeal of all of these films based on the iconic Kaiju and when we hear anything new about this follow up I will bring it up as well in a later episode.
But what do you think of these stories, are you excited for a 4th Mummy film with Fraser and Weisz, what are your thoughts on this stacked cast for the Road House follow up, Will you watch a new film based on Miss Piggy and are you excited for a Minus One sequel? Let me know your thoughts on them all down below.
And with all of that, this brings us to the end of the 141st edition of Weird Mind News Room and I hope you enjoyed this ever changing lengths of weekly ramblings. Let me know your thoughts on all that was discussed down below and as always stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in the next episode :)
Take care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
