Weird Mind News Room Episode 170: May 25th - 31st
*Music to clip out of existence*
Well Hello to all of you very fine and very wonderful people, my name is Sam and I once again am here as your host for another week of the weekly series of Weird Mind News Room where for another week of content we will be in the focus of talking on all the new releases, the trailers and news that has come to us from the information superhighway that you may have missed over the last few days, so lets not waste too much time on introductions and lets get to talking on all things media for this week.
New Releases Clipping out of Bounds
Movies
The Backrooms
On the first of the new releases is the basis of a project that has a sense that you can give a concept of horror that starts off as a simple unsettling image on 4Chan and then formed a series on YouTube that someone special (and will always be special to me) introduced to me all those years ago and has spawned into something unique with them (and a bit excessive with others) but it seems the creator of this video series will be taking his concept to the world into the big screen and giving a deeper dive into this strange and unsettling world as we have the release of the new film based on Kane Parsons series of YouTube films with the release of The Backrooms. Based on the Creepypasta and video series by Parsons, the film will follow a therapist who will soon be entering a strange and unsettling world found in a department store in search of finding her missing patient. Reception on this directorial debut and take on the series has been very well recieved by critics with praise on its atmosphere, tension, narrative themes and performances, even if some may feel it is a bit of a mixed outcome (and the case of some of these people that are reviewing it that they think it was supposed to be based on some fan made Roblox games, when its based on the YouTube series and people will find some reasons to complain or get some clicks you never know) but if you want to check out this strange new place then you can catch this new film out now in cinemas.Power Ballad
On the 2nd of the films for this week is bringing us from the mysterious world to a journey all the way over to my home land in the emerald isles where the concept about music and bonding over the genre will lead to some misunderstanding, a new sense of rivalry and a battle for the rights to be given back to who it was rightfully for as we are in for the battle of the ages as we have the release of the all new film known simply as Power Ballad. The film will follow Rick (Paul Rudd), a past his prime wedding singer, who comes across fading boy band Star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig where they will soon bond over music and a late night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Ricks songs into a hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he deserves, even if it means risking everything he cares about. Reception on this new film has also seen some very well recieved reception with praise on the lead performances of Rudd and Jonas, the narrative, concept and just for being a feel good film of this year and seen as one of this years best so far and if you want to check out this track listing then you can do so now also in cinemas.TV Shows
Spider-Noir
On the first of the television side for this week and the only bit of superhero based news that we do have for this week is one that will be bringing us to another part of this massive spindled web of a multiverse where we may have been introduced to this character on the big screen almost a decade ago but it looks like we will be taking a dive into his own part of the universe of wall crawlers and show the seedy underbelly of the city and mixed with his role of a Private Investigator can get a lot more dangerous, as its time to put on the suit, hat and mask for this part of the spider-verse as we have the release of the all new tv series of Spider-Noir. The series will follow Ben Reilly (Nicholas Cage), an aging, Down on his luck private investigator, who grapples with his past life as the only superhero in the 1930s New York known as The Spider. Soon when an exceptional case comes his way, he will soon have to don the mask once more and become the Spider once again to help to save the city from some powerful new threats. Reception on this new series has also been very well recieved with praise on its performances, the concept of watching in 2 various options, the narrative and for like the Spiderverse films, should be what the Sony verse of Spider-Man adjacent project should've been (and I can agree so far from what I have watched that it is great) and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can watch all 8 episodes now in Authentic Black and White or True-Hue Colour on Amazon Prime.Rick and Morty Season 9
As for the 2nd tv series for this week, we will be keeping it into some multiversal-esque misadventures this time around but instead of the superhero affair, its more of a Scientist with a god complex and drinking problem and his dysfunctional family in law, especially with his teenage hormonal nephew, as its time to get a little bit more schwifty once again as we are on some new adventures with the release of the 9th season of Rick and Morty. This new series will of course continue on the many misadventures across space, time and dimensions for the drunken scientist, his hormonal nephew and the other members of his in-laws of the Smith family to keep the universe safe, all in the name of science. Reception on this new season of the show seems to be well recieved with praise on its visual style and narrative choices, especially in the one off based adventures, though some of the more ongoing plot line episodes could be a little mixed, it still seems there is appeal to this franchise and if you want to check it out for yourself you can catch the first episode now on Adult Swim and HBO Max with a new episode releasing every Sunday / Monday Morning.Video Games
007 First Light
Now on games and we start with the big triple A title for this week and we have seen many iterations of this distinct icon of fiction over the last 6 decades that started with some novels, then turned into a massive movie franchise spanning 25+ films to date (and another on the way just waiting to find the next take on the character) and even a few spin off shows and interactive media, it is with this latter aspect that we will be focusing on this week and going back to where it all began and seeing how this agent got his moniker in the first place, as IOI, the studio behind the beloved Hitman franchise, is taken a crack at another iconic figure in media with their own take of this MI6 agent with the release of 007 First Light. This game will have you in the role of a much younger James Bond (albeit not in connection of James Bond Jr) who in this will be portrayed as 26 years old and an inexperienced MI6 agent, who is tasked on a mission that if completed and not taken out in the process will be able to obtain a iconic 00 moniker and a truce License to kill. Reception on this new title has also been very well recieved with praise on its narrative, visuals, performances, gameplay and being a proper solid prequel to the character of Bond (and I want to preface the whole ordeal of some calling it woke cause you are being given orders by a woman makes me think some of these people have not watched a Bond film since Golden Eye and seem to forget it was the same in Hitman with orders from Diana) but it seems like a solid title and if you want to gain a license to kill then you can play it now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC with a Switch 2 version releasing later this year.Mina The Hollower
The last of the games and of the new releases for this week is a return to a company who had created one of the most beloved indie darling titles of the last decade or so and it seems they will be back with a new character to hopefully see as much as their original but where that first was a classic man of honour in some strong armour and quite the unique form of weaponry defense, this will still be in a similar setting but more of a magical form and maybe possible smaller hero in size but have as much strength then you may expect, as Yacht Club Games, the creators of Shovel Knight, are back with an all new indie title as we finally have the release of their new title of Mina the Hollower. The game will revolve around the title character, a skilled inventor and "Hollower" who travels all the way to Tenebrous Isles to discover why her spark generators (which she has invented to power the island) have suddenly gone out under mysterious circumstances. Reception on this title has also been very well recieved with praise on its visuals, gameplay, challenge and being another solid title that proved this studio was not a one hit wonder and seen as one of this years best titles as well and if you are up for an all new adventure then you can play it now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 1/2, Mac and PC.Trailers first light
Toy Story 5
We have a fair few trailers this week and we will start on the side of animation for this week as we are heading over to my personal favourite studio for animation and on the aspects of returning back to the world found inside the Toy Box for this ordeal where we have had our experience when we were younger of playing with these toys of ours and enjoying that sense of animation, but in this case with the changing times that the ideals of this world may be about to change as we have the release of the final trailer for the upcoming release of Toy Story 5. This will follow on from the events of the last film with Woody having left Bonnie to help abandoned toys find new owners with Bo and has made Jessie the leader of the toys with Buzz as her second-in-command. But soon the age of the Toys may be coming to an end as Bonnie has now become enamored of her new favourite plaything of a Frog-like tablet named Lilypad. Now it has been the ideals that their has been quite a debate when it comes to the likes of when this series should've came to a proper conclusion from some say 3 was a perfect send off, some will say 4 worked as a great conclusion for Woody's character, but I can see on my own terms I love those films and I will even say that I can see at least with this film being a worthwhile place to wrap it up, especially with the concept of being a solid place to end with Toys vs Tech as a proper place to wrap it all up. I know there is a mention to the ideals they may have at least ideas for 2 more projects but I am sure I can see what they are if they do down the line but I will give this one a chance in focus first and I am very excited to check this out, as I am for any Pixar film and we will see how this all comes together when it releases into cinemas in about 3 weeks time on June 19th.
Enola Holmes 3
For the 2nd trailer for this week will be a focus to the side of streaming and it will be a case of the ideals that the focus of their being a mystery afoot and it will be a case that while we have a focus of some ideals that their is some important aspects to a mystery and kidnapping afoot, this young sleuth will be finding out about the mystery of one other thing and that is with Marriage, as the younger sister of Sherlock is back once more as we have recieved a trailer for the 3rd film in the Enola Holmes series. The film will see Enola preparing for her impending wedding to Lord Tewkesbury, but soon becomes a case of being a little more complicated when it is discovered that her brother Sherlock Holmes has been kidnapped and a mystery to rescue him will soon bring things into chaos. So it is a case that this series has been one of those that has had a bit of a mixed positive aspect as I know that a lot of people really liked the first one, and I am one of them, I think it is fine and in the many projects that MBB has been in, this is one of her more decent roles. The sequel while I have yet to watch I heard was good but some say it felt too similar in aspects to the first film but maybe I'll give a look at some point and give an opinion to, but in this one I think the ideal could be interesting of a mystery mixed with the ordeal of a wedding and the genre of mystery has been thriving lately across different forms and creatives and while I may be a bit mixed on this lead actress with her range on things, I will give it a chance and its not too long away either as the wedding bells will be ringing soon when it drops on Netflix from the 1st of July.
Disclosure Day
The next trailer in focus is one that may be teetering on my rule of not a focus on something for the likes of talking on it with it out in 2 weeks but I will make the exception on this side of writing but it is time for a return to a world of sci-fi with a lot of mystery to it all and the return from the man that was known as the father of the blockbuster, as after a more personal tale, we are going full deep sci-fi of mystery as we have the release of the final trailer of Speilberg's latest film of Disclosure Day. While plot details are somewhat vague, the film will ask the question If you found out we weren't alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? Now it has been a case that the sense of mystery has proven to be a big success as while we have seen the footage across these trailers, it is a sense that its very vague and confusing as to what will entail for this title but it seems a lot of the mystery and explanation has been kept secret and it seems to be a success from early first reactions seems to be calling one of Spielberg's best in the last 20 years and it could be worthwhile, and its a case while I have him as one of my favourite directors and personally I am very excited to go in pretty much near blind and see what will occour of this all and its not too long away as the film will be revealed in cinemas from the 10th of June.
X-Men 97 Season 2
The next trailer and the 2nd animated focus trailer for this week, it is time to suit up, gather the team and prepare to find the solution to restore the world and timeline from the outcome that has occoured in this event of things but it will be time for them to come to me, my X-Men, as we have the release of the first look trailer for the upcoming 2nd season of the revivial of X-Men 97'. This new season will see members of the X-Men scattered across time and must find a way back to the 1990s while also dealing with the impending threat of Apocalypse. Meanwhile some of the members are still in the present and must deal and face off against new foes and the continued intolerance against mutants with the absence of some of these other members. It really seems that the approach for this revival could've been an overall mess with it being a follow up to the original series, but it has seemed to prove their is an appeal overall for this project and personally I have seen a bit of it and is solid (have been watching through the original series first to properly engage and focus on it overall) but it does give me hope that we will see this continued success and story and even see a revival of some other classic series to get continuations (particularly with a certain Wall Crawler) but I am sure we will see the outcome of this in due time and its not long from release either as it is confirmed that the new season will be releasing on Disney+ from the 1st of July.
Primetime
This next trailer in focus was one that I was quite surprised to see pop up on my feed in all regards but the approach, concept and lead portraying another person known in media is quite something and has proven their worth in taking down some of the most renowned people that live and walk among us, but in this case why not have a seat over there as we have the release of the all new film coming to us from A24 known as Primetime. The film will tell the origins and the rise in the creation of the dateline NBC News Magazine series To Catch a Predator, which saw host Chris Hansen (Robert Pattinson) confronting adult men looking to do sexual favours with minors and get lured to a sting house to serve justice on these dangerous individuals. Now this teaser came out of nowhere to me and personally from all of the focus in this teaser is amazing and I feel from every recent project from the indie to the blockbuster, Pattinson really has got so much range and focus and we all tried to really type cast him as the vampire from Twilight. Personally it does look really solid and I have to wonder in this regards if it will be the rise of the series and will see some recreations of some of the most well known sequences and predators in the show, if it will lead up all the way to the one that got the show taking off the air and ended the series, but I ma sure we will get an idea of it in due time and personally hope this could be a big award contender for Pattinson but I am sure we will see the operation come about when the film releases in cinemas later this year (reportedly a September release for it).
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4
For the sole game trailer for this week, it will soon be that time once again for the annual tradition of gearing up, locking and loading and preparing for an all out conflict that may change or turn the tide of war then we may realize it and will see some new sense of threat and where no rule can escape from being broken, as it was finally revealed this week for the annual entry of this long running FPS series as we have the official announcement trailer for the newest entry in COD with Modern Warfare 4. The new game will see a war and conflict between North and South Korea which follows on from Modern Warfare 3s narrative and see the Korean Peninsula by the Korean Peoples army threatening to destabilize the world. The game will see it center around 2 protagonist of Private Park, a South Korean recruit who fights alongside his squad to protect his home and Captain Price, the former leader of task force 141 who is on the run following the assassination of US General Shepard. So it has been a case that the franchise of COD has had quite the ups and downs especially in the last few years but I feel the biggest issues from this franchise may be in its fatigue of yearly releases, especially with how the last entries for both this Modern Warfare Reboot and Black Ops went (but this was due to them releasing the entry a year after the previous entries of these series in particular (and I believe MW3 was supposed to be a Ghost or Advanced Warfare sequel)) but I feel in this case it may be down to see what will come of this particular entry and may be worth checking to see if they gave the series a break for one or 2 years and come back a little later it could see more appeal back to the franchise. I don't have too much with some of these recent entries but I can see this appeal in their regards (then again most I do with these COD games is play the campaign and that's where it mostly ends) but I will give this a look in due time with this new entry dropping on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and the first for Switch 2 on October 23rd.
House of the Dragon Season 3
For the final trailer of this week will be one more show on the way in due time that will of course being in the focus again of things getting bigger, the battles getting bloodier and the fires beginning to rise as more conflict amongst a massive family that rules this land with dragon fire is about to show even more fractures, as we have the release of the final trailer for the upcoming 3rd season of House of the Dragon. This new season will follow on from the end of the 2nd season and will see the growing conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen as the war and conflict enters a new phase of the growing internal war with the affects of Dragons, armies, and political decisions will soon shape the future of Westeros. Similar to the case of how I discussed about it a fair amount of weeks ago, this particular entry of the series is in quite the odd state as while the first season was well liked and brought people back, the follow up was a little more confusing and underwhelming but had its appeal in some aspects (and the case the showrunner seems not to be getting on well with the Author of this world), but given their was appeal from the previous series in this world earlier this year with the tales of Duncan and Egg, I can see this possibly having a hopeful turn around, especially with this season staring with one of the most well known battles in the books themselves and I hope it will find some solid footing for these last 2 seasons of television but I guess we will fins out in due time as the series will be released on HBO Max from the 21st / 22nd of June.
News for the Ballad Blues
Small serving of project updates and release dates
Now this weeks news stories and hodge Podge, is not as big of a feast as we are expecting, but rather its a more smaller scale tasting platter of stories that still have some interest in the likes of project updates from new people coming on board or dates of when we may see this project but I am sure we'll find something to appease the news quantity of the week but lets look into those projects.
The last of the stories and release date aspects is with one that is more now on the delay side of things then on confirmations and it seems I have lost track with this upcoming game title in how many times this may have been delayed but we have another notch in this delayed belt as it was announced this week that the upcoming reboot and take on the title of Fable has been delayed out of Fall 2026 and will now be launching in February 2027 (though no specific date in that month as of yet). Now the reason for this delay is mainly down to the decision of the new head of the studio, who might I add has been in all the forms of other companies like Sony, Nintendo and even Steam has actually been getting some solid wins lately with a changed logo, focused solely on making proper solid titles and not using AI or Live Service as the crutch and even doing the opposite of other studio and reducing some pricing, mainly in their Game Pass system and they have specified that it was to make sure that it has its moment to be a major focus of gaming given the fall is a busy period this year with their other titles like Halo Campaign Evolved, Gears of War E-Day and many more (as well as competition like Wolverine and GTA6) that I can understand this delay and was worried it was more concepts and aspects being added that delayed it but I think its a solid strategy and to get in their first before some other big titles. Now as time has gone on I have been a lot more interested to try this new title out, especially in the recent trailer focused on some concept that has a lot of appeal and seems to be listening to some fans and I am all for checking it out and exploring this magical new world in due time, but I am sure we will see what will come of it hopefully next February and as Soon as I get a date on the title I will update in a later episode.
But what do you think of these stories, do you think the new writers will make another solid Paddington film, will you be checking out this new Cliff booth film in cinemas or wait for the Netflix release, are you excited for the Rambo Prequel film and do you see this as the last Fable Delay and will you be playing it when it releases? Let me know what you think of it all down below.
And with all of that this brings us to the end of the 170th edition of Weird Mind News Room and I hope you enjoy my ramblings for another week. Let me know your thoughts on all that was discussed down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in the next episode :)
Take care, keep being you, Signing off
Sam H :)
