Weird Mind News Room Episode 179: July 27th - August 2nd
*A Brand new day for music
Well Hello again to all of you very fine and wonderful people once again, it is I, your friendly neighbourhood host Sam and I will like to welcome you once again to the newest edition of my weekly series of Weird Mind News Room where we will be doing another week of New Releases, Trailers and News Stories that has been found or brought up from the realm of Media and may be a shorter one as well. So lets not waste the time on the usual introductions and lets get to talking on all things media for this week.
Brand new day of Releases
Movies
Spider-Man Brand New Day
On the first of the new releases for this week will be of course one of the biggest releases of this summer in many ways as it will be the return to a hero who has been one of the most well known in the world, but in this universe where many know of the hero, the person behind the mask has been forgotten by everyone after many years all to keep them safe which will be beneficial, but in this new instance things may be about to change in many unexpected ways, as everyones favourite friendly neighbourhood wall crawler is back once more as we have the release of the 4th entry of this iteration of the character with Spider-Man Brand New Day. Following the events of the spell that Doctor Strange casted at the end of No Way Home, the world has now forgotten that Peter Parker exists and is the identity of Spider-Man. Four Years Later, he protects the city of New York as the iconic wall crawler but soon the overwhelming pressure of crime fighting ignites a threatening physical evolution in Peter, forcing him to deal with that while also investigating a series of crimes that lead to a more powerful threat. Reception on this new entry of the series has been very well recieved with praise on the action, character development, visuals and for being a more solid Spider-man story that took the better approach of the street level hero side then going too big in multiverse craziness and it seems that its already hitting a massive haul for the weekend and if you are ready for a brand new day then you can catch this film out now in cinemas.
Soulm8te
As for the 2nd film for this week is one that has had a bit f a journey to get released and made into a fully functioning product as it was supposed to be released as early as January this year, but some tech issues and required updates and fixes delayed the launch but now they are ready to serve their purprose of companionship and possibly other.... means before it becomes a little too sentient and will become a little more of a bloody affair, as we are returning to the world of the series of M3gan with a new more R-rated mature entry of the series with the new spin-off known as Soulm8te. The film will see a man who acquires an adult android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. Soon however in an attempt to create a fully sentient partner, he inadvertently turn a harmless Love Bot into a deadly soulmate. Reception on this new spin off film has not had a lot of critical reception but it seems so far from a mix of the small few from both Critics and Audiences that it seems to be a bit better then they expected it to be from praise on the character development of the main android and some of the graphic kills and concepts, though some elements like the other characters or narrative can feel a little lacking or just like some other films (some have said it has elements that feel a little like Companion and Obsession) but if you want to check it out for yourself then you can buy the film on any digital storefront.
TV Shows
Batman Caped Crusader season 2
On the tv side for this week is another return to the realm of superheroes but we are going to the other side of the heroes to DC and to another one of the most popular and well known heroes in the world as they will be back to strike fear and to protect his city by any means of justice, as after 2 years since the first debut of this spiritual follow up to the original animated series, we will be dawning the cowl once more with the release of the 2nd season to Batman Caped Crusader. The series will continue on from the events of the first season in the more gothic underbelly of the neo noir period as we follow Bruce Wayne in his early years as the Caped Crusader on his one man war against crime and some more powerful adversaries including the Riddler, The Penguin and The Joker. Reception on this new season follow up like the first season has been very well recieved with praise on the animation, characters and narrative and seen as a possible improvement over the first season, and if you are up for some more new stories in this Noire based Gotham, then you can catch the new season now on Amazon Prime.
President Curtis
For the 2nd of the tv shows for this week is one that will be giving us a trip back to the world and series where some strange and elaborate anomolies can occour for this pair of strange family members but in this case we are not focusing too much on those 2 but rather on one of the characters that do appear now and again across the series as they will be sorting out some of their own issues and ordeals that those 2 couldn't care to get involved with as we are returning to the world of Rick of Morty with the release of the new spin off in the form of President Curtis. The new series will follow the commander in chief (Keith David) and his eccentric staff as they tackle the kind of crisis that Rick Sanchez could not be bothered with - from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena. Reception on this new spin off so far seems to be decently recieved with praise on its performances (particularly of the always charming Keith David), the visuals, narratives and being a more chill version of the overly elaborate forms of the main series that while it can feel a little slow at first it does improve as the season goes on and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can catch the first episode now on HBO Max with a new episode releasing every Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Video Games
Halo Campaign Evolved
As for the last of the new releases for this week, we will be heading back to the blast from the past and heading off to the focus of space as we head back to a time of a series that had aura, launched a console company into the stratosphere and helped to create one of gamings most iconic figures and mascots that may have faltered in recent titles according to many but will be going back to where it all began to do one thing and that is to finish the fight, as we have the release of where the Chief's story began with the remake of the original title of Halo Campaign evolved. This of course will be a remake of the original title and will see you take control of John Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier in the 26th century and his AI companion Cortana, who alongside his team of the United Nations Space Command, who do battle against the alien theocracy known as the Covenant while they attempt to discover the secret of the eponymous Halo, a strange Ring shaped Artifical world. Reception on this new remake seems to be well recieved with praise on the visuals, gameplay and beloved story and multiplayer, though criticize the new prologue missions as feeling very lacking and unnecessary and some feeling its a desperate attempt at keeping Halo Alive that has been faltering a bit in choices but lets hope they will take the right things from this and save the franchise in the future and if you want to play it for yourself then you can play it now on Xbox Series X/S, PC and for the first time on PS5 (likely a Switch Port will come down the line but we will see).
Trailers Evolved
Matchbox the Movie
On the first of the trailers for this week is one that I was unsure if it was a comic con trailer or one that came after but in this case of things it would fit in the form of the item that you would see at those conventions and that is in the focus of the wide world of merchandising as while we have seen the likes of those beloved building bricks, knockoff, dolls that can be anything and a fair bit more, it looks like we are going to the side of toys for the cool boys and going very fast and full of extreme stunts and interesting design choices as we have the release of the trailer for the upcoming film based on the toy product of Matchbox. The film will follow Sean Walker (John Cena), a Spy and former soldier who reunites with childhood friends only to be drugged and kidnapped by a group who are looking for a Nuclear warhead. The CIA soon believes that Walker and his friends stole the warhead, so in the sense to clear their names will look in anyway to re-steal the warhead back for them. In all sense of things, I feel this is probably the most elaborate and over the top concept and story you could make out of a project on a range of small toy cars that this feels like a storyline from the Fast and Furious that was seen as a bit too extreme even for that series that has defied all laws of common sense with that series at this point but maybe there is a reason in the massive lore of these toys and maybe it will be one of those titles that will have a focus of no sense but may be an entertaining popcorn flick to stick on in the background or something but I have been surprised with films based on products and toys so I guess we will the outcome by the release on Apple TV+ from October 9th.
Jumanji Open World
On the 2nd trailer for this week will be the last of the big titles that will be coming out around the festive season that after a fair amount of waiting and uncertainty of when we may see this bit of footage but it will be time to see the case that starting from a board game to video game to one that is not in the most perfectly functioning state to where it will evolve into one more big action adventure for one last go around as we have finally gotten the release of the 3rd film in this reboot take on the 90s classic film with Jumanji Open World. The film will follow immediately on from the events of The Next Level and will see Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha having escaped from the perilous obstacles of Jumanji before, but this time the world of Jumanji has broken free from its console, unleashing the characters and chaos into the real world and will bring even more challenges along the way. So the concept of this reboot series was one back years ago when it was first announced that it was a dead in the water concept with issues stemming from the character choice castings, Gillen's outfit and the case that it will pail in comparison of the original with the late Robin Williams in the main role, but then the film came out and was a surprisingly entertaining film that respects the original and provided a fun adventure during the holiday season and it was the same with the sequel before that also proved a success and now with this one I was out the bat actually very excited for this title and it seems like this is the best method it could go with this title as it has the charm of the avatars and could be some interesting development for some of the others along the way and I also say it has some good gags from the footage I have seen in the trailer so far and I hope in all case of things that this will become a pretty satisfying finale of a surprisingly entertaining trilogy and I hope as well it will not be dead on arrival from the release date for it, but in all sense of things with everything else out at the time I will find a point to check it out and I hope you will as well when the game is unleashed into cinemas from December 25th / 26th.
Children of Blood and Bone
On the next trailer for this week is with the newest focus of taking the world of literature and taking the expansive and elaborate narratives and world found on these pages and translate into a full fledged adaption, but there is a bit of layers and drama about this title series itself that comes from the person that wrote it but we will get to it in a moment as we will delve into the world of fantasy in focus as we have the release of the first trailer for the upcoming adaption of Children of Blood and Bone. Based on the first novel by Tomi Adeyemi, The film is set in the fictional realm of Orisha, it will follow a journey of a young woman named Zélie (Thuso Mbedu) will embark on a quest to reclaim the ability to use magic that her people use to harness and control before it was violently stolen from her people by a mad King. So I'm not overly familiar with the series itself as its more of a recent new book series but in this case of things from what I have learned the novels sound like an interesting take on race and social injustice and has a lot of deep interesting lore that spanned a popular trilogy of books and I can appreciate the casting of some well known and some new comers that fit the culture. Now I have mentioned this has caused some drama as the original author who wrote the film has apparently distanced themselves recently to this title and unfollowed one of the stars and while I have no idea of what happened on the set, the case of the original creator distancing them from it is a concern. The other issue I have from this films trailer is who chose the music for this trailer cause Beyonce's music track feels really off putting and majorly distracting but maybe they can learn for the next trailer but I guess we will see if these concerns should be a focus but I guess we will find out by the films release into cinemas from the 5th of February.
Fall 2 Deadpoint
The next trailer and the last of the sequel focused titles this week is a follow on that is a bit of a stretch in terms of being a surprising follow to something I wondered how were they going to make another one of that title given the outcome, but it seems in this that they are going for another new location and another dangerous spot that one false movement or decision could spell the case of life and death as we have the release for the trailer for the upcoming sequel of Fall with Deadpoint. Following on from the original film and set sometime after the death of Shiloh Hunter, her sister Jax agrees to a tribute proposed by Shiloh's daring friend, Luce. The two then travel to Thailand to conquer a treacherous plank walk on Mount Kwan, but a sudden rockslide leaves them trapped at a terrifying height of 3000 feet, forcing the duo to push their limits and cooperate to save their lives. It can be said that something like this is a surprising hit as the original seemed like one of these low budget concepts that may have been forgotten if not for some decently solid performances and some surprise twists and focus to one location. I can understand the approach of going a lot more bigger and a lot higher and dangerous with this follow up and I hope in all case that it could have the same surprise appeal the original did a couple of years ago but I am sure we can see on that outcome and its not too long away to see of that either as this new film will clinging its way into cinemas from September 2nd.
The Thomas Crown Affair
The next trailer is one that I think is a bit of a new take on a film project from the past but in the focus of who is behind and in front of the camera in making it, it seems to be a bit of a passion project for them and will be hopefully worth stealing for as we have the release of the trailer for the new take on the classic heist film of The Thomas Crown Affair. The film will follow the titular character (Michael B Jordan) a billionaire who cleverly steals a painting while another heist attempted for it fails. Followed by an insurance investigator (Adria Arjona) the two will soon fall in love during this elaborate Cat and Mouse Game. Now I am not overly familiar with the original takes on this film as this will be the 2nd remake as we had the original back in 1968 and then the first remake about 30 years ago in 1999 so the ideals of giving this a new take on it with the leading man also being behind the camera could be an interesting one and I feel in all case that you could update it every few decades with the evolving of methods and means of the narrative and I am intrigued to see how Jordan approach a heist based film, but I guess we can find out by the release of the film in cinemas from the 5th of March next year.
Wicker
The next trailer in focus is one that sounds from the naming of the film and on the likes of what studio is making it, you would assume this would be some form of an overly elaborate horror film that could be connected to some other established horror titles (yes including that one with the scene and the certain actor) but in this case this may be going more in the direction of a romance, and not just a standard one but one that will be quite the possibly overly raunchy one as we have the release of the trailer for the upcoming new title known as Wicker. The film will focus on a fisherwomen (Olivia Coleman), an outcast who requests the village basket Weaver (Peter Dinklage) to build her a husband for herself made out of wicker and soon the sense of marriage material (and the raw passionate love making) become the real talk of the town. So I had heard a bit about this and from the title I was thinking this was going to be some film that was connected to the Wicker Man horrors, but then I watched the trailer and learned more about it and I was honestly surprised about the outcome of what was presented to me in the footage and how much of this was giving me a little bit of the Favourite but more raunchier in form and the idea seems like a fun and original concept that all stemmed from a simple short story and after watching the trailer and hearing all of the very strong praise it had garnered from Sundance, I am intrigued to check this out as the film will be woven into completion with its release into cinemas from the 30th of October.
Victorian Psycho
The last of the trailers for this week will be more in the focus to an actual horror based title where we have seen some of these elaborate and crazed killers of the past, but we are getting a bit of a distinct time setting for this go around as we have the release of the trailer for the all new period slasher of Victorian Psycho. Set in 1858, it follows an eccentric young governess, Winifred Notty (Maika Monroe), arriving at the remote gothic manor of Esnor House. As Winifred Assimilates, staff begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners wonder if there is something amiss about this new governess. I can see the case of taking another approach of the slasher genre with giving it a different time setting as you could do it near around the era and location of the period where we will soon see the likes of tales of the Ripper tormenting the streets of London but showing a different form about a few decades earlier and it seems like it could have intrigue and interesting takes on it (plus I also learned while writing that this was shot and filmed here in Ireland so that probably explained why Thomasin Mckenzie was spotted around the country a few time a little while ago) and from what I have seen on some early reception it seems to be decently well liked so far so it could be worth a watch and while the film has no set date where I am from but for sometime this year, it will be released in the US from the 25th of September.
News Crusader
A mix of choice from Heroes and adventure
So we will be back for another serving of some stories and topics in our usual serving to the realm of the Hodge Podge as we will be in the focus of some stories from the different realms and other focus topics from this week that we have in focus overall, so let us see what will come from it all that was in focus for this week.
we will however get some good news on the superhero side of things as we do have one addition of some casting news and heading back over to Marvel for this one as we have some updates on the beginning of the growing planed cast of the Mutants and X-Men. Now we have seen some already established in the MCU from Deadpool, Wolverine and Gambit, new reworked takes on mutants with Namor and Ms Marvel both being now seen as Mutants and then some upcoming appearances of other characters like Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Mystique just to name a few. But in this case we are looking at getting some insight on some future appearances and while we wait to see the consensus of who Sadie Sink is playing from her appearance in Spider-Man and some more new rumours for other with Jensen Ackles being another contender for Magneto and Obsession breakout star Inde Navarrette wanting to play the new version of Mystique for the MCU universe, we do have one that has been officially confirmed as of this week as it was announced that Ready or Not star Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost in this growing X-Men Line up. Now honestly I think this is a really solid choice in this case as I see this as being one that was not overly considered or chosen by many as it seemed like the only actress that they tried to push for this role was Sydney Sweeney, but I am tired of them pushing that name on every blonde female hero with the only reason being they want some eye candy (plus she is already established in some form of the Marvel universe as one of the Spider-Women form Madame Web) and I am al for this choice. Now I am intrigued to see who they will be getting for the rest of this planned new updated form of the mutants and if some like Tatum's Gambit will still be around but I am sure we will see as time goes on for more additions to be made and I will update on any more new additions as time goes on in a later episode.
For one of the other casting news that we have for this week and connecting back to one of the names mentioned in the last story, we do have a possible update or report of another name that has appeared in this decades highest grossing original and it seems they may be going from romantic horror focus to action adventure (with still some hints of horror) as its reported that Obsession star Michael Johnston may have been casted in the upcoming 4th film of the Mummy series with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Now in this case it could be the likes that in the time since the 2nd film (as I believe they are making the 3rd film not canon) they could've been married and had a child and likely could play their older son or he could be a new form of the villain and titular monster but I guess we will have to see what will come of this and if this has been made official. I am sure we will see what will come of this as the project will soon be heading into production for its release I believe next October so I am sure we can see what shall come of it and if any other additions will come about and if there is I will let you know in a later episode. But what are your thoughts on all that was discussed, are you disappointed in the sudden cancelling of Wonder Man, do you think Blade will ever get a chance to release, do you see Booster Gold still happening and who would you cast as the main lead, what are your thoughts on Weaving as Emma Frost and who else do you see as the new take on the Mutants, who do you see johnston play in this new Mummy film and do you think Flanagan is a good choice for the Warhammer series? Let me knwo what you think down below.
And with all of that this brings us to the end of the 179th edition of Weird Mind News Room and I hope you enjoy the ramblings for another week. Let me know your thoughts on all that was discussed down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in the next episode :)
Take Care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
