Weird Mind News Room Episode 189: October 5th - 11th
*Music to take down a social empire
Well hello again to all of you very wonderful people across the information superhighway, my name is Sam and I would like to welcome you all to the latest edition of my weekly series of Weird Mind News Room where for another week we will be in focus of talking on all the new Releases, Trailers and News Stories from this week, so lets not waste too much time on these usual introductions and lts get to talking on all things media for another week.
An uprising of New Releases
Movies
The Social Reckoning
On the first of the new releases will be a focus to the side of the stories that are based on some true events that will be a case where in the early days of all of this work and focus that there was a sense of connection and bringing many together, but as the years went on, emotions change, aggression rises and a lot more tension will beginning to take shape and it will take someone on the inside to take it all down before it gets worse as it will time for it being way past making friends as we have the release of the surprise sequel of the Facebook based title with The Social Reckoning. Now based on the memoir from the Wall Street Journal from 2021, the film will focus on Facebook engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) as they blow the whistle on the social networks most guarded secrets hidden by the head of the company of Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong). Reception on this follow up has been a bit of a mixed outcome that while performances and cinematography has been well praised, the film is been hit in the mixed array of writing as well as the focus that some feel that this film is more outdated then the initial film 16 years prior that was seen as ahead of its time but there is probably a reasonable warning for it all and if you want to learn and expose the secrets then you can catch this film out now in cinemas.
Other Mommy
For the next release of the week and the 2nd film in focus will be the ideals that we have at one point in our lives may have had a form of an imaginary friend in a different person or thing that only we can see and it can be all well and good, but what if the likes of this "friend" becomes a lot more aggressive and cannot be contained and will soon cause a sense of sinister outcomes and ordeals and expose some family secrets all in the purpose of wanting one outcome itself as we have the release of the all new horror adaption known as Other Mommy. Now based on the novel of Incidents around the House (and maybe the famous 2 sentence Horror Story), it will focus on the presence of a Paranormal Entity of 'Other Mommy' that takes on the appearance of a young girls mother, that soon threatens her family and haunts her home with her only request is wanting to be and live in her heart. Reception to this title however has not been the most glowing of receptions and has been labelled as one of this years underwhelming films that while the performance of Jessica Chastain is praised for the dual roles as well as some visuals and concepts, the film is bogged down by too many ideas with no clear structure, a major change to the novel that has some mixed opinions and too much use of jumpscares and unnecessary graphic imagery to a title that was seen as a tragic horror story, but if you want to find out all of these for yourself then you can catch this film also out now in cinemas.
The Uprising
The next title will be more akin to something that will appeal in the area of action as while there has been many a discussion and focus about how the wealthy cause a downfall of society, we will see a perspective of a time where the common folk took a stand against their oppressors for a possible change, with this being a possible slight alternate change to include a famous folklore hero as Paul Greengrass is giving us a bit of a mostly historical true story with the release of The Uprising. Set in England in 1381 and to the backdrop of the Peasants Revolt which will see a farmer (Andrew Garfield) lead a rebellion against the forces of the then 14-year-old King Richard II and may also see the origins of a well known famous thief. Reception on this title has also seen a bit of a mixed outcome that while the historical focus and performances are well recieved, some of that historical accuracy feels a little hit or miss, especially to the opinion of some of the aspects it tries to imply at the end of the title (as well as some of the filming techniques being a little messy) but if you want to see the story of hope form the past you can also catch this film out now in cinemas.
Matchbox The Movie
The last of the films for this week is one that I feel from the concept of the idea seems like quite the far fetched idea for the focus and name in perspective of the title but I guess with another series taking a lot of this over the top seriousness they had to take some of that ideals and work it for a idea of this product as we have the release of the all new film based on the product of Matchbox. The film will follow Sean Walker (John Cena), a Spy and former soldier who reunites with childhood friends only to be drugged and kidnapped by a group who are looking for a Nuclear warhead. The CIA soon believes that Walker and his friends stole the warhead, so in the sense to clear their names will look in anyway to re-steal the warhead back for them. Reception on this title has also been hit with some not so favourable reviews with most issues stemming for a plot that has little substance of a focus, performances that are trying with what they can but not feeling flat and action and humour being a little messy in a title that some say should be trimmed down by a little in the runtime, but I am sure there will be some audience for this in the future and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can catch it now on Apple TV+.
Tv Shows
Carrie
On the first of the tv shows for this week is with one that has been given a fair bit of releasing at the right time for the spooky season and will be a story that we have seen in the past adapted before but this new one will be more fleshed out in the process and given a more updated modern focus to it all as while you may feel that they are all going to laugh at you, they won't be when the real truth comes out as we have the release of the all new take on a Stephen King classic of Carrie. Now based on the novel by King, it will follow the titular character (Summer H. Howell) a sheltered girl with telekinetic powers who finally is allowed to go to normal school but will soon be bullied and this will soon lead to a horrific, bloody incident leading to her mother's Domineering influence. Reception on this new adaption take has been very well recieved with praise on the performances, the fleshing out and expanding on the original narrative and for being a solid modern take on this classic and if you want to check it out for yourself then you can catch the full first season now on Amazon Prime.
Avatar Seven Havens
As for the other tv show for this week will be a return to a series that has stood the test of time in many different stories across the generations of learning the 4 elements to save the world and told across 2 different eras (and 2 different styles with one being a much better outcome over the other) and will be time to delve further into the future and learn about the consequences from the previous legend has put on these new element wielders as we have the release of the newest collection of Books in the world of Avatar with Seven Havens. The series will follow on from the events of the Legend of Korra and will follow a new Earthbender, Pavi, who discovers is the next Avatar and descendant of Korra. Hunted by enemies both of human and spirit form, she and her long lost twin must uncover their strange origins and save the seven Havens, the central pillars of civilization risen from a world shattered by an apocalyptic event, before it is too late, with the Avatar seen as a destroyer rather then a savior. Reception so far on the new entry of this IP has been very highly praised with strong focus on the animation, characters, performances and narrative shown far and if you are ready to learn of the story to follow then you can catch the first 3 episodes now on Paramount+ with the next batch of episodes releasing every Friday.
Video Games
Gears of War E-Day
Moving over to the games for this week will start off to a return to a series that has been a long and bloody affair of a long standing war and battle for eons and we have followed the exploits of one team and their next generation looking to turn the tides and save humanity, but in this case of looking forward, we will be going back to where the story began of this endless war and see where the origins of this team and brotherhood began as we have the release of the prequel to the Gears of War series with E-Day. The game takes place 14 years before the events of the original game and will take place around Emergence Day, when the Locust horde first emerged from beneath the planet of Sera and launched a devastating surprise attack on humanity. You will then take control and follow war veterans Marcus Phoenix and Dominic Santiago as they fight to survive the invasion in the city of Kalona alongside fellow soldiers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, forming Bravo Squad amidst the collapse of humanity. Reception on this new entry has been very strongly recieved with praise on its return to the darker roots, emotional weight, visuals, combat customization and Siege Horde mode, with some issues stemming to pacing mainly in the semi-open levels, bosses, and some omitted mechanics (and the usual array of those saying that the game is bad cause its the norm to get views for saying its bad with poor takes or it underperforming only after 2 days) but it seems like this could be the perspective that could bring this series back once more and if you are ready to learn the origins then you can play it now on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Star Wars Galactic Racer
And the last of the new releases will be taking us to the far reaches of a Galaxy Far Far Away as we are making a return to an era or series title that was a staple of many back in the late 90s across consoles, PC and Arcades across the globe and it seems when we though the best of the best in terms of speed had been proven back then, it looks like its time to rev those engines up once again as we have the release of the all new racing title of Star Wars Galactic Racer. Set after the events of Return of the Jedi, the title takes place within the framework of the Galactic League, created by former Podracer Mechanic Darius Pax and taking place on the lawless Outer Rim, where his livelihood and control of the business is being threatened by the villainous champion Kester Bool. In a desperate situation, he seeks the aid from Shade, a mysterious Loner among the racers with a personal grudge against the Bool family to overthrow Kester and regain control of the competition that he created. reception on this new entry of the racer has been very well recieved with praise on the visuals, gameplay, narrative and content included (including the icon of Biddy Blas) and seen as the best reviewed Star Wars title since knights of the Old Republic and if you are ready to race then you can play it now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (and likely a Switch 2 port down the line).
The Social trailering
The Exorcist Martyrs
So initially it was only confirmed with one trailer for this week but with the advent of some content going on as New York Comic Con that we have a few extra to talk on but we will focus on the first of the trailers that I feel will fit perfectly to drop the first look around this time of year and we have seen many iteration of the story, some may be true, some trying to rewrite the formula and some at least tried and stumbled in the outcome and its with this latter one that this new take was conjured that no matter how many times something is expelled from the innocent, dark forces will always find a way back into their lives as we have gotten the first trailer for the all new take on this horror IP with The Exorcist Martyrs. The film will follow Julie Miller (Scarlet Johansson) a detective who about a decade ago stopped the spree of Serial Killer Father Sunday (Joh Leguizamo) only for a new killer to drag her back into the darkness 13 years later when her name is written blood of a murdered Alter Boy on the walls of a Church Crypt. Teaming with a ex-con turned Priest (Chiwatel Ejifor) she must find a way to confront the ghosts of her past while dealing with a possibility that the next target of these dark forces could be with her Son (Jacobi Jupe). The likes with this franchise has been one that has seen many takes and surprise outcomes with the original being a powerhouse that started as a novel, a set of Bad Omens and led to one of the most influential Horrors of all time, winning awards and spawning a franchise and this was what would've essentially been the follow up to Believer 3 years ago. However in that films poor outcome from nonsensical plot approach, butchering of a character from the original and reception both critically and financially put those ideas to follow six feet under and brought in a man known for his contemporary horror to take the reigns (one who has already been talked about this episode). Personally I am interested in the concept of Flanagan's take on this IP though I hope it will turn out solid as I liked the trailer but maybe I need to get a 2nd opinion on it but I am sure there will be plenty of time for that as we will see by the release of the film into cinemas from March 12th next year.
Blade Runner 2099
Now the first of the trailers coming to us from New York Comic Con will be giving us a look and perspective into the world of the distant future where we have seen the first narrative set a few years back and one to come in a few years about the ideals of things that look like us but will be one that are seen as a threat and not to be trusted, until the possibility of a connection will change all of that in the past with those consequences leading to the outcome of where this world has led to and how the concept of change will be made a focus to fix in the process as we have the release of the 2nd trailer for this upcoming new entry of this popular sci-fi series with Blade Runner 2099. Set 50 years after the events of 2049, the series will be set in 2099 Los Angeles, a place in disarray following a replicant uprising where Replicants are now the power brokers of the city and humans are treated as second class citizens. Olwen (Michelle Yeoh) a replicant Blade Runner is nearing the end of her life and will soon reunite with her partner Cora (Hunter Schaffer), a human pretending to be a replicant to hunt down a gang of rogue replicants. In the case with this IP is a bit of a different one as there is a little bit of a different focus to us not getting show too much about this world besides the ideals of these Runners hunting down the Replicants from overthrowing society despite the mass production of them and making them feel more human and we saw this with the original (and countless re-releases with new cut's of various opinions) and a follow up that brought a lot of answers for some questions as well as a couple more with it and I am always interested to see what they would do with the world and show the alternate outcome of what happens from what I feel started with the outcome of the original title and from what I have seen visually it could be something worth a watch and give answers to some lingering questions but I guess we can see by the release of this series on Amazon Prime from the 25th of November.
Godzilla Minus Zero
Our final trailer for this week is one that will be keeping it in the genre of Sci-fi and while that previous one is more based in the distant future, this will be more in an approach of focused to the time of the past where the aftermath of a titan based problem and aftermath of a bloody war was assumed to have been all done and over, but it looks like what they assumed was destroyed has returned to cause a much greater deal of destruction, but there may be a reason to let it happen as we have the release of the 2nd and what I will assume could be the final trailer for the upcoming kaiju follow up of Godzilla Minus Zero. The film will pick up in 1949, 2 years after the tumultuous events of Minus One and will continue the story from the Shikishima family as they face an all new calamity and a return of one they had though was destroyed. I will say that I am a simple man (one that is sad and likely heavily depressed for many reasons but still a simple man) and I will say with anything that the appeal of this iconic kaiju has been one that has appeal for many years and that was enhanced after the initial Minus One Release as that film came in with a very small but modest budget and came away with a grand visual spectacle and some solid focus that brought it back to the era of the original films of the 50s and provide a varying appeal in different perspective of this character where we will have these more Japanese based titles and then the more Hollywood based Monsterverse to follow and from what I have heard from some of the film festivals that this is another spectacle of a title well worth the wait and I am very excited to check this out and I am for sure going to check this out when the film is unleashed into cinemas from November 6th.
News worth the races in spaces
The many stories of your choosing
So we are back once more in the focus of some stories to bring with you in the realm of the Hodge Podge in our weekly News section where for this week there is a focus of some small stories connected to 2 big aspects of the week with one that has been in discussions for a fair bit of time now and one that is some of the titles or announcements that was already mentioned was happening this week across the pond and some from outside those concepts but we shall delve into talking on what will be in perspective for this weeks content.
Another project that has been discussed and being developed with an unclear focus is that the studio is looking to try and fast track a sequel to the award winning and box office smash of Barbie with them looking to bring back Greta Gerwig to direct (likely after she is done with the Narnia adaptions for Netflix) and Margot Robbie in the title role (and most case hopefully Ryan Gosling's Ken too) with the only case is that its unclear if there has been plans made for a sequel already with writing starting or if it will be a project that will happen as Gerwig, Robbie and Co are looking for a bit more of a profitable amount for them all to return after that first film's massive success and looking to try and make it happen before the rights revert back to Mattel at the end of the year and the new head of both studios looking to make the sequel happen. If it all falls apart the only other Barbie Movie still to happen is with the animated film by Illumination and Mattel so we will see if they reach a deal in the salaries for all to come back but I feel that this could be a bit of a ongoing mess for a possible solution.
But where some projects have been put into the likes of planned or fast tracked, there is one project that has been shown in the opposite approach with this being in the realm of Middle Earth and this is not to do with the Hunt for Gollum that is currently still filming, but rather this is with the project that is being developed by light night host Stephen Colbert has been put on pause for the moment due to the whole ordeal of the Merger. Now Colbert has already faced some of the consequences of this new head as it was them that ended the Late Show back at the end of Last year and wrapped up back at the end of May this year which had to do with their differing opinions on politics and the current US Administration and chocked it up to financial reasons (yet they seemed fine to spend $111 Billion for this merger but can afford a show that cancelling it could be seen as a defiance against the first Amendment possibly but we are not delving into this topic as I try not to get too political in a part of the world I am not even apart of). Looking past the possible silencing, I can see where the likes of it pausing is maybe due to also finding a possible solution to this project as it will be a focus on six chapters that were skipped past in the original film adaptions and told of some of their early parts of the journey as well as a well known face and character from the book that was glossed over that I can see trying to make something work from just a small handful of chapters (granted they tried with Voyage of the Demeter of one chapter of Dracula stretched to a 2 hour film to a mixed result) but I am sure there will be a plan in some form soon enough as the likes of how they will try and keep the world of Tolkien's stories as a profitable approach but I am sure we will see by Gollum's release and other stories they will try to tell following that but we will see.
For one last project that is in the focus to the likes of them developing into an enticing project, while we have seen a various forms of gaming adaptions, it looks like this next one will be making an approach of seeing the world of the future told in their own perspective as there is plans of them developing a feature length film based on the gaming title of Cyberpunk 2077. Now this game has had quite the journey to get made into a full game with it initially being announced back in early 2010s and many years of hype before it released in a bit of a messy state in December 2020 (granted this was the ordeal or dealing with working from home during the pandemic and demand from higher ups at some studios pushing it to happen that it ended up in a messy state) and then overtime it improved and now has seen great acclaim, a fantastic expansion and has already seen a adaption take with a highly acclaimed Anime with Edgerunners a few years back so I am sure there will be a case of them looking to make this a success. There is a little bit of a hope in this case as it has been seen with the likes of their attempts and success with the current adaptions of the Sonic the Hedgehog films and will have to be seen if they will do it again with their take on Call of Duty but given the right creatives, not try and warp it to their own interpretation and a solid cast that love the source material we will see what will come of this project sometime in the near future on this overall. Now as I said I am not happy with this ordeal of the merging of these studios itself as is many people in the industry that made the effort to stop this happening but it will have to be seen if it will last or something happens in the eleventh hour then it will have to be seen and if there is any updates on that or any of these project I will let you know in a later episode.
And speaking of some form of espionage, there is one more announcement for the studio of Disney that will be taking more of a heavier approach in fantasy then on the world of Superheroes and these spies will be a lot more younger as well, as it was announced at the convention that a new animated series based on the popular book series of Artemis Fowl will be in development for Disney+ and will see the creator of Irish Author Eoin Colfer as an executive producer for this project. Now you may be surprised on this approach given that they gave it a try with the initial series in a film version a couple of years ago that finally released after being in development hell since the novels inception, but many would like to write it off as the film was a majorly disliked project that was heavily hated on the dialogue, characters, story, visuals and for taking major detractions from the source material itself that left it a mess and was one of the only originals to be removed from Disney+ so getting a more faithful take on the franchise and in the style of animation and original author on board may help it to be and adaption that it deserves to get. It seems like there could be some hope for this to work in this format as the series has seen takes from novels into graphic novel takes on those books after a while and if it has a nice flashy and fast paced art style then I am sure it will bring the long time and new fans together to enjoy something special when it finally arrives. Now in this case there is no word on when we may see this project but once I hear anything I will let you know in a later episode.
But what are your thoughts on the stories of this week, what are your thoughts of this merger happening and of the possible projects being pushed, do you see the Marvel Zombie specials being solid, is the Zodiac going to be a revival to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D or something similar, will the Artemis Fowl animated series work better then the film, do you think this Amanda the Adventurer film be good or a mess, are you excited for a 3rd Sicario and do you feel the thoughts on his pausing of the project is a bit excessive? Let me know your thoughts on all down below.
And with all of that this brings us to the end of the 189th edition of Weird Mind News Room and I hope you enjoy the ramblings for another week. Let me know your thoughts on all discussed this week down below and as always I hope you all stay being wonderful people and have a great day everyday and I will see you all in the next episode :)
Take care, keep being you, signing off
Sam H :)
